My sister is 36 and still unmarried, and I genuinely don't know how to help her

My sister is turning 36 this year, and she is still unmarried. She mostly stays at home now, although she worked in a hospital before.

I’m writing this because I genuinely care about her and I feel like I should do something as her brother. She has always helped me a lot, and I want to be there for her in the same way.

The difficult part is that I can see that marriage is something she really wants. Sometimes when she sees women around her with their children, I can tell that it makes her sad. She doesn't complain about it or put pressure on anyone, but as her brother, I notice these things.

Recently, two men came to ask for her hand, but neither situation went anywhere and we never heard back from them. I don't know why. Maybe they changed their minds, maybe there were other reasons, or maybe they simply weren't compatible. I honestly don't know.

As her brother, I obviously think she's beautiful. Realistically, I would say she's an ordinary-looking woman, but I don't think that's what matters most. She is a good person, has worked before, is responsible, and has a lot to offer as a wife and as a person.

What confuses me is how she is supposed to meet someone if she mostly stays at home? In our community, it's not exactly normal for a woman her age to go around meeting men, and I also don't personally know many unmarried men around her age.

I know people will say "it's written, it's naseeb/mektoub" — and I believe that. But I also believe you have to take reasonable steps and create opportunities rather than simply waiting for something to happen.

I'm not trying to pressure her into marriage or find someone for her behind her back. I just want to help her in a respectful way.

I Started Early. Why Must I Wait?

At 23 years old, I work abroad as an international teacher.

Three years ago, I met someone who changed the direction of my life. From the very beginning, I didn't see her as someone to pass time with—I saw my future wife.

That single intention changed everything.

While studying, I started working. I pushed myself every single day. I sacrificed comfort, sleep, and free time because I wanted to become the man she deserved. Alhamdulillah, at only 21 years old, I was recruited as an international teacher. I truly believe she was one of the biggest reasons I reached this point. She never carried me, but she gave me a reason to keep moving forward. She means more to me than words can describe.

This summer, I returned home with one goal: to ask my parents for their blessing to get engaged.

Their answer was no.

They believe I'm still too young. They say I still have military service to resolve, that I'm not fully stable yet, and that I should wait.

But here's what hurts.

I started building my life early. I accepted responsibilities early. I worked earlier than most people my age. If I was expected to become a responsible man early, why am I expected to postpone the part of life I've been working toward from the very beginning?

I asked myself, "Wait for what?"

I don't have an answer.

After many difficult conversations, I told the woman I love that maybe the best thing for both of us is to stop communicating until Allah brings us together in a halal way, if that is what He has written for us. It was one of the hardest decisions I've ever made, but pleasing Allah comes before pleasing ourselves.

Still...

I'm afraid.

I'm afraid that someone else may come and ask for her hand. I know her. I know she'd probably refuse today.

But until when?

And if one day she accepts, I would never blame her. I would understand. We all live by what Allah has written for us.

I say "Alhamdulillah" because I truly believe in Allah's decree. I trust His wisdom even when I don't understand it.

But trusting Allah doesn't erase human emotions.

I won't pretend I'm not scared.

In less than a month, I'll leave my country again to continue working abroad, carrying the same uncertainty with me.

I spoke to my parents again.

Nothing changed.

My mother was so upset that she didn't speak to me for three days because I kept insisting.

I also have an older brother and sister who are still unmarried. I love them deeply, but I don't believe my readiness should depend on anyone else's timeline.

What scares me the most isn't being single.

It's losing the person who gave me a reason to become the man I am today.

If that happens, I know life will continue.

I'll wake up.

I'll go to work.

I'll smile when people expect me to.

But a part of me feels like I'll only be existing, not truly living.

Maybe this is just another test from Allah.

Maybe patience today will become gratitude tomorrow.

I don't know what tomorrow holds.

I only ask Allah to grant me what is best, to protect the woman I love, to soften the hearts of our families if we are good for one another, and to give me the strength to accept His decree if our paths were never meant to meet.

Alhamdulilah.
