Can Laser-Treated Retinal Detachment Be as Durable as a Scleral Buckle for Boxing?

I’ve been thinking about Sugar Ray Leonard’s retinal detachment. He had surgery, recovered, and was eventually able to return to boxing.
My question is: can someone potentially get a similar outcome after a retinal tear or small detachment that was treated successfully with laser photocoagulation, or is that kind of durability more associated with procedures like a scleral buckle?
Basically, when it comes to returning to a high-impact sport like boxing, does a well-healed laser treatment provide comparable long-term stability, or would a buckle generally make the retina more secure?
I know every retinal injury is different and this ultimately depends on a retina specialist’s evaluation. I’m mainly interested in hearing from anyone who has experience with this or knows more about how these procedures compare.

joining?

Hello, everyone.
I have a question. I recently had a small retinal detachment that was successfully treated with laser, and it’s now fully healed.
Do you think this would disqualify me from joining the Army or the Marine Corps? Has anyone here joined with a history of a retinal detachment, or know if it’s waiverable for active duty or overseas deployment?
I’d appreciate any insight or personal experiences. Thanks!

why it hurts

I’ve kept this to myself for years and tried to bury it, but lately I feel like I need to finally say it somewhere.
Years ago, I was an exchange student in another country. While I was there, I fell in love with a guy.
I don’t identify as queer, and I still don’t completely know how to explain that part of myself. I just know that I loved him. We had a relationship, and for the first time in my life, I experienced what it felt like to genuinely love someone and feel loved back.
One night, we were outside a bar when two guys started going after him. He was a pretty small-bodied guy, and they were threatening to sexually assault him. I stepped in and fought them. I ended up getting seriously hurt, but at the time I genuinely didn’t care what happened to me as long as he was safe.
What ended our relationship wasn’t that fight, though.
My visa was expiring.
I had to leave the country and come back to the U.S. There wasn’t some huge betrayal or dramatic breakup. We didn’t stop loving each other. Our time together just… ran out.
And somehow that makes it harder for me.
He was my first love. I think part of me has spent years trying to convince myself that it shouldn’t matter anymore, that it happened a long time ago and I should have moved on.
But sometimes I think about the fact that I had someone I loved, someone I was willing to get seriously hurt protecting, and then one day I simply had to get on a plane and leave him because a date on a visa said my time was over.
I don’t even know exactly what I’m looking for by posting this. Maybe I just needed to admit that it happened, that he mattered to me, and that losing him still hurts.
Sometimes I wonder what my life would have looked like if I’d been allowed to stay.

can i start training?

Fellow wrestling people,
I boxed competitively for about 10 years. Recently, I had a retinal tear with a small retinal detachment that was treated with laser, and it’s now healed.
I’m thinking about starting wrestling but I’m wondering if competing would be safe. Has anyone here had a similar eye injury and successfully returned to wrestling or bjj , or been advised against it by their retina specialist?
I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks!

going back to training after retinal tear ?

I recently had a **large retinal tear** in my left eye after getting into a fight. A retina specialist treated it with **laser photocoagulation**, and at my one-week follow-up they said the **laser is holding well**.
The difficult part is that I’m a competitive boxer, and boxing means a lot to me. My doctor recommended that I stop boxing, but also said that if I choose to continue, it’s at my own risk because repeated punches and head movement could lead to a retinal detachment.
I’m wondering if anyone here has been in a similar situation. Has anyone returned to boxing or another contact sport after a large retinal tear that was successfully treated with laser? If so, what did your retina specialist tell you, and were you able to compete again without problems?
I’m not looking for medical clearance over the internet—just hoping to hear about other people’s experiences.🙏

Is that test accurate ?

I was playing baseball when the ball hit me very hard in the face. After the injury, I developed a bloodshot eye and bruising around my eye. I went to the emergency room, where they performed an eye ultrasound and examined my eye after putting yellow dye in it. They also used an instrument that touched gently pressed inside my eye during the examination.
I’m worried about the possibility of a small retinal tear. Should I trust that the ER examination would have detected a serious problem, or should I see an eye doctor to specifically check for a small retinal tear? I’m concerned because I’ve read that a retinal tear can sometimes lead to a retinal detachment.
I haven’t had a shower of new floaters. I have occasionally noticed a few floaters, and I think I may have seen a brief flash of light once or twice, but it wasn’t something that kept happening.
One more thing: the eye that was hit is my left eye, which has been weaker and somewhat blurry since childhood because I have a lazy eye (amblyopia). That makes it harder for me to tell whether any blurriness is new or just my normal vision.
