Making An Impression

(This story and the following as the last few stories are reflecting the favorite memories as shared in the story “A Legacy”. This story is told in the POV of Sid who if you don’t remember would be married to Riju in the AU I have developed. Enjoy)

Sid:

I plopped myself down in my spot already dreading this semester. Even though my senior year was now halfway through as this was the first day of the second semester, high school just couldn’t get over soon enough. But strangely enough it could afford to wait. I need to get things straightened up for after high school.

I sat and watched classmates file into the room seemingly without a care and either grouped together to chat more or find their seats as the seating arrangement was displayed on the white board by a projector. I glanced up at who would be my neighbors with halfhearted interest until one name caught my full attention. I stared at the board, daring it to change. But sure enough I read her name correctly. ‘Riju Diver’.

I was both elated and worried. Why? Because I had a crush on her and thus now I was worried of seeming like a complete idiot thus ruining my chances with her. She’s smart, funny, kind… as you can see she was perfect. She seemed like she could easily be in the ‘It’ crowd but I never saw her hanging around them save for when she would stand up to them.

“Hey, neighbor.” I heard a voice break my inner thoughts taking me by surprise as I sent papers flying as I practically leapt out of seat. Once I recovered, I snapped my head to find Riju trying everything to hide her snickering.

“You gave me a heart attack!” I protested.

“Probably more like I jumpstarted it since you had the mile long stare again.” she wittingly snapped back with a smirk.

We were friends and I learned this banter was normal for her which I enjoyed. “My hero.” I sarcastically remarked.

I stooped down to retrieve my scattered pile of papers. Riju went to help and in the process, dropped her phone. It landed face up and the screen woke up revealing an image of her probably a few years younger on a mountain trail, getting a piggyback ride from a guy much older with brown medium semi-curly hair and a well trimmed beard that had a red tint to it. She had one arm around his neck to stabilize herself as she was using the other to take a selfie while the guy had his brownish green eyes crossed making a hilarious face. Behind them a woman who was noticeably tall, probably Riju’s current height but it was hard to tell, in mid-swing as it seemed she was throwing a snowball at someone or something off camera. She had red eyes, and bright orange hair. Her skin seemed pailer than usual but it complimented her appearance rather than making her look sickly as it might’ve been for someone else.

I picked up the last of the papers and took the ones Riju picked up and was offering to me. “Who’s that?” I asked as my curiosity proved too much to resist as I gestured to her phone.

She checked the screen to see who I was referring to. “Who? Him?” she asked pointing to the guy carrying her.

I shrugged my shoulders. “Both I guess.”

“Oh, that’s just my parents.” she said as I noticed a smile on her face as she answered.

Upon hearing this, even though they seemed as close as that in the picture, the fact they didn’t look related at all threw me for a loop. I tried to hide my shock but apparently Riju either saw it or was used to it as she voluntarily elaborated saying, “My dad was a foster parent to me and couple other kids who were twins. After the twins got adopted and a few failed adoption interviews later, dad adopted me when I was eleven. Later married mom, and they had Drizzt a year later.”

“Oh cool.” I replied. “So…l

The teacher walked in before I could finish my thought. Some time I’ll be able to work up the courage to ask her out even though she’s totally out of my league. That period ended without another chance to talk to her again and the day went on. At lunch I was sitting with my friends we were shooting the breeze mostly talking about cross country stuff since most of us, myself included, were part of the team. I lost interest however since Riju was on my mind who then I coincidentally spotted across the cafeteria with her friends. Looks like I wouldn’t get in a word with her now.

“Sid!” I heard my name suddenly being almost shouted at me. I turned to see Sonic, his nickname since he was very fast. Definitely the fastest on our team. His real name is Colin but the nickname stuck and he didn’t mind it.

“Hm?” I responded.

“You okay?” He asked more amused then concerned.

“Yeah…” I answered I said dismissively. “What was the question?”

Sonic looked in the direction of where I was looking then back to me. “Actually my question now is, when are you going to ask her out?”

The whole group seemed to take interest in it since they knew of my crush on Riju. “I don’t know if I should.” I said in defeat. “She already has been asked out by several other guys.”

“Yeah.” He acknowledged but expecting more.

“And she said no to every one of them. So I doubt she’s not interested in dating at all.”

“Or….” Sonic interjected, “She’s waiting for you to ask.”

I snorted at the preposterous notion of that being the reason. “You don’t know that!” I accused.

“And you don’t know if she’s interested in dating at all.” He countered begrudgingly I saw his point. “You won’t know either way till you ask. The worst that will happen is she’ll say no. Sure it’ll be awkward either way but from what I’ve gleaned, She’s not one to humiliate someone when it’s undeserved. You two are already friends maybe pose it as just hanging out somewhere and see what happens.”

I gave it some thought then I determined ask her at the end of lunch. So I waited till the bell rang. When it did, I left my friends who gave me encouraging words as they left to go to their classes. I watched as Riju left her friends to go to her locker since she had classes off campus at s college nearby since she told me she wanted to follow her mother’s footsteps and get into the fashion industry. I walked up behind her. “Um… Riju.” I called nervously.

She gave a Shriek as she dropped her stuff and spun around to me in some sort of martial arts ready stance. Once she realized it was me, she relaxed and spoke, “Okay, I deserved that.” She said with a smirk, but then her face went to concern “But you can’t sneak up on me like that, Sid.”

“Sorry!” I said remembering she was a black belt in jujutsu. “I wasn’t wanting payback I was hoping to talk to you.”

“It’s alright.” She said dismissively as she stooped to retrieve her stuff from the floor as I helped her. We stood back up. She adjusted her grip on her stuff to secure it then looked at me, “What’s up?”

“Ummm…” I started as my confidence started to deteriorate. “I was wondering if..”

She cocked her head to the side which made me even more flustered. “Are you alright?” She asked concerned.

“No no no!” I said to reassure her then realized what i said, I mean… yes I’m fine it just…” I then couldn’t go on like this and gave up. “Never mind” With my head hung in shame in defeat I turned and walked away. I only took three steps before I heard her call my name.

“Sid!”

Stopped and turned my head to look behind me. wordlessly.

“I’m free this evening.” She offered clearly knowingly.

I just stood there dumbfounded. as she continued, “However, I hate to do this to you but would you mind picking me up? My car is in the shop.”

I stuttered, “I… Ye…. Uh…. Yeah no problem.”

Riju giggled at my resolve. I was too busy trying to bring my heartbeat down to care, not that I minder regardless though.

“Cool.” she said way more calmly than I was. “It’s a date.” She then left for the bus stop. Leaving me frozen in place.

I couldn’t move. I feared if I moved that this dream I was in would disappear forever. But then a teacher came around the corner and started yelling at me to get to class since the tardy bell already rang which I then bolted for my next class. I began to wonder if it really happened till I received a text from Riju with her address, time and saying that I didn’t need to dress up at all.

The school day couldn’t get over quickly enough but when it did, I rushed home to drop my stuff off. Even mom and dad’s bickering couldn’t weigh me down as I sped through the house to get ready. I announced I was leaving again to no fanfare since my parents were too busy with themselves as usual. Hopped in my car, and drove off. I made it to what google maps said was their house. I pulled in their driveway and parked behind a pickup. I got out of the car and walked to the porch where the front door was. I texted Riju that I arrived. She must still be getting ready or something because she didn’t reply right away like she usually does. I decided to make sure I was at the right address so I knocked on the door.

Immediately I heard barking. I could tell that the dog was at least huge and protective. At least that’s what the bark told me. I heard guy’s voice about tenor range in tone command the dog to ‘shut up’. I heard struggling on the front door which I assumed where the dog was and the owner of the voice probably wrangling it away from the door as I heard, “Shade. Sit!” Things calmed down and the door finally opened enough so the guy answering could use his legs as a barrier so the dog couldn’t get out.

The guy at the door was younger than me but probably in middle school. He had shoulder length, straight auburn hair. One eye was hazel while the other was red. His frame was scrawny but what he lacked for muscle he made up for in height for his age. He was almost as tall as I was. he had sleeveless shirt and athletic shorts on and a digital artist’s stylus pen in his ear. He looked at me quizzically. “Hey…” I greeted him nervously starting to wonder if I was at the right house since I did’t recognize him. “Does uh… Riju Diver live here?”

He reeled his head back in confusion. “No…”’he answered confused.

My blood drained as I started to apologize. “I’m so sorry I was given this address when,” I was about to explain I might of gotten a house number wrong or something but that’s when I noticed a wicked smirk on his face. I was confused. “Wha…”

He then started laughing for a few seconds before he calmed down and said, “Oh man! You should’ve seen the look on your face!” Then succumbing to another fit of laughter.

“So…” I said trying to put context to what was going on but he regained control.

“You’re at the right place, Sid.” He said.

Since he said my name, I felt a bit more at ease even finding his joke funny too. “You got me good.” I admitted.

“Glad you can take a joke.” He replied extending his hand. “I’m Drizzt.”

I took his hand and shook it realizing that I have seen pictures of him before but much younger. “Oh! Nice to finally meet you in person. Riju talks about you alot.”

Before he could reply, we turned towards the direction into the house as a woman’s voice called out. “Drizzt! Stop harassing him and let him inside!”

Upon hearing his name from what I could only assume was his and Riju’s mother, he tensed up going to something similar to an ‘at ease’ stance. “Sorry, mom.” He relplied

He then backed up forcing what looked more like a wolf than a dog back up while it was trying to get past Drizzt the whole time. “Don’t worry about Shade.” Drizzt explained. Now that he’s seen you, he’s just looking for attention. Come on in.”

I obliged and sure enough, when Shade got to me, he started sniffing me then nudging my hand to start petting him. I looked around the entrance as I walked in. The place was huge and the walls were decorated with images of the whole family I presume. My observations were interrupted by the sound of light footsteps coming closer until the woman Riju said was her mother on her lock screen came in. She wore a pleasant smile, a tee shirt and yoga pants. “You must be Sid.”’She said extending her hand.

“Yes, Mrs. Diver.” I responded suddenly feeling a bit intimidated since now I was meeting Riju’s mother and she had an aura of someone you wouldn’t want to mess with.

“No need to be so formal, call me Midna.” She said, genuinely sweetly. She then turned towards Drizzt, “Could you check on your sister?”

“Sure, mom.” He replied then bolted out of the entryway and assumingely a flight of stairs. Before not so subtly yelling, “Riju! Your boyfriend’s here.”

“Drizzt!” I heard Riju’s voice in a higher pitch than normal followed by a lot of thumping where as Shade bounded up the stairs to investigate. Midna face palmed in second hand embarrassment. “I’m sorry about him.” She said to me as she gestured for me to follow her.

“I think he’s funny.” I said to reassure her.

“Don’t let him hear that. He gets his sense of humor from his father.” She said. She ushered me to sit in a leather overstuffed easy chair. I didn’t need to be told twice. I plopped myself down as. She took a seat on the couch opposite me.

“So how’s school going for you?” She started, clearly filling the time as I waited.

“In a sense, too slow but not slow enough.” I admitted. “If that makes sense.”

She chuckled, “Given it’s your senior year, it makes an odd amount of sense.”

We were interrupted by a bigger thump coming from upstairs and Drizzt shouting, “Ok I yield! I yield!”

Midna turned her head in the direction of the noise. “Drizzt! I said to check on her! Not… whatever it is you’re doing.”

I couldn’t help but smile as I found how amusing and wholesome they all got along. And deep down a bit envious but I brushed that aside. Drizzt came back down the stairs and reported, “She’s almost ready.”

“And why did it take you that long to find out?” Midna asked arms crossed with an eyebrow raised.

“She started it!” He instinctively said. After getting no reaction from Midna, he reluctantly corrected, “Okay maybe I started it but both of you told me to always to finish what I started.”

“I also told you time and place and picking your fights more carefully after the last time you picked on your sister.” Midna added.

Before we could continue the conversation, we heard a car alarm being armed, a door open, and clomping around the house. “Welcome back, honey.” Midna called from the couch directing her attention behind me.

“Who’s car in the driveway?” I heard a loud semi-low voice man’s voice call from the other room.

“I’m assuming that’s Sid’s since he and Riju are going on a date.” Midna calmly explained.

“What?!” I heard Riju’s father say in obvious surprise.

Even before I could turn to look behind me, I knew he entered the living room and I at that moment knew what prey felt as it knew its predator was poised to strike. I slowly turned around and tried to hide how frightened I was as I saw something different to what I saw on Riju’s lock screen. His face showed he was analyzing my appearance. Either for weak points to take me down easily or just trying to process the news, I couldn’t tell nor did I dare to guess. “Hi, Mr Diver.” I cautiously said, “My name’s Sid.

Unburdened (Pt 2)

This is the continuation of the Unburdened Pt. 1. Though this part doesn’t contain any of the more darker content, it will reference some of it which still may trigger someone but not as much detail as last time. Reader discretion is still advised. This story is for entertainment purposes only but not to poke fun or make light of these real issues that real people face. If you find yourself relating to some/all parts in this story or going through what seems like Hell in general, there IS hope, and there IS help. You are enough, you are loved. Don’t be afraid to reach out for support when you need it.

Drizzt: I got in the passenger seat of dad’s truck. It was disorienting since I haven’t ridden in his semi in a while where it maneuvers differently and sitting so high up. As dad drove, I stared out the window. I was able to calm myself down from the episode that dad found me in. The fact that my secret was almost out about my struggles was bittersweet. I didn’t want to hide anything from mom and dad but I knew the conversation that was for sure going to happen when we got home wasn’t going to be easy. My thoughts were interrupted when out of the corner of my eye, I saw dad raise his hand to press a button on his wireless headset, and then speak.

“Hello?” He said, clearly taking a call.

He paused to allow the person on the other side to speak. Before saying, “This is he.”

There was a good fifteen to twenty seconds of silence. “I was not informed but I know where he is. I….”

He was interrupted. He pursed his lips waiting to get a chance to finish his sentence. The way he said ‘know where he is’, he was talking to school faculty. He winced and spoke again.

“Officer, I have him with me, you can call off the search. Can I hang up? I have a probably irate wife whose call I ignored once already.”

I reeled a bit when he said officer but l didn’t take into consideration how long it’s been since I fled do it probably was about the time that police would be involved. Dad gave the officer our address and reaffirmation that he would be there as soon as possible. He hit the button again and had Siri call mom as I’m assuming her call was timed out and it went to voicemail.

“Hey honey, I…” He started the conversation, but fell silent. He remained silent and I watched he make a few pained faces. He took a deep breath after a few seconds and said, “I’m sorry.”

He paused for another second then said, “I ignored the first call because I found him and the situation was delicate. The second time I was literally trying to end the call with the police so I could answer yours.”

“He is. We’re going to the warehouse to drive off my drop off my truck and then we’re bee-lining it home.” Another pause. “I understand, honey. And I appreciate that but all the same I’ll make sure to make it up to you… ….I love you too. See you soon.”

After a second, he pressed the button on his headset and sighed. “I take it we’re no longer in the dog house?” I asked hoping to ease the tension.

He laughed, “Heh! I’ll say she won’t bite my head off for ignoring her calls. She’s probably going to have a some words for you scaring her still.”

I knew he meant that as levity but I couldn’t help feeling bad still. Dad must’ve sensed my self disappointment. “Hey.” He calmly said to get my attention. I looked up at him.

“Hmm?” was all I said.

“You know that we love you right?”

“Yeah… but”

“There’s nothing you can do that won’t change that.”

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Because it’s true.” He started. Upon a pause in response in me, he then elaborated, “I won’t pretend to be a psychic or claim that having faced my own demons mean I completely understand what you’re going through. But this I know. It’s that communication helps bridge any gap.”

“Oookay?” I said not exactly following him.

“Take your mother and I for example.” He started.

“You could probably tell she was not exactly happy with me putting off her calls. Right?”

“Yeah.”

“But now that I explained what is going on…”

“You did?” I asked since I didn’t hear anything that fully explained what happened.

“I explained my reasoning.” He amended.

“And that calmed her down?” I asked somewhat skeptically.

He snorted. “Yeah that does sound preposterous, especially knowing how passionate your mother gets. But, she trusts me to know what I’m doing and if I can elaborate later, that I will.”

“Really?” I asked impressed.

“Yeah tv makes that sound like a rare thing doesn’t it?” He asked knowingly. “But your mother and I have been married for nineteen years and known each other for a lot longer than that. We shared everything together.”

“What’s that got to do with me?” I asked confused but then realized how it sounded. “Shoot! I meant..”

“It’s alright.” He calmly reassured me. “My point is we trust and love each other so much that we confide in each other knowing that the other is ready to help whether it be forgiveness when we’ve messed up, support when we’re hurt, a reality check when we lose focus, or a good laugh when we need a smile.”

“Mom sometimes needs that support?!” I asked genuinely bewildered, “She seems like she could be a dictator should it strike her fancy.”

Dad laughed and I couldn’t help but snicker myself. “Don’t give her ideas.” My dad replied jokingly before going serious again. “She is a strong independent woman indeed, but she’s still human. She has her low moments like everyone does. That’s when she goes to us for support.”

“How do I help?”

“By existing.” He put it bluntly.

“Really?” I was having a hard time believing that “I thought I was the source of her headaches.”

“There were days we all got on her nerves. And I know for a fact you were either frustrated or annoyed with her too.” He gave me a side glance.

“I….” I protested but then remembered it was true. “Yeah.”

“But she loves you too much to let anything you have or could do get in the way of her caring about you.” He said obviously staring to drive the point home. “And my love for you is of the same caliber. We want you to come to us if something happens. We’ll do what is best for you.”

“But I don’t…” I reacted but he interrupted.

“Even if that means allowing you to resolve the issue by yourself. In that instance we will willingly give you advice to the best of our ability and be there to celebrate your triumph or support you in the failure.”

As he continued, I started to tear up. Not realizing I needed to hear this. By this moment he stopped the truck because we were just a quarter mile away from the warehouse he’s dispatched from. He looked at me to see how I was doing. “It’s okay dad. I just need a minute.”

He then nodded and a continued to the gate to the truck yard and about ten minutes later he docked the truck. He beckoned me out to help him with his post trip vehicle inspection because apparently he was on his way home before he got word about my incident. He shooed away a coworker who was about to assist him and who caught on to what was going on to what he needed to know and left us alone. As we were walking to the trailer to check the tires he carried on the conversation. “As for those who tell you that you have to ‘man up’, feeling your emotions isn’t a ‘girl’ thing. It’s a human thing and you are allowed to feel them. Those who tell you otherwise don’t process theirs or they don’t have a healthy outlet to clear out the ugly they’re dealing with.”

I thought back to Agitha. What dad said now mad me wonder what she may be going through. I never saw her with anyone outside her clique or Tingle, but she has seen me with my family. Could she be jealous?”

“Hey dad?” I called as I felt like a weight I’ve been carrying had become less cumbersome.

“Yeah?” He said turning his attention from the trailer tire to me.

I couldn’t find the words to express what the conversation meant to me so I just hugged him tightly. He didn’t hesitate to return it and we hugged for a while.

“I love you, dad.” I said

“I love you too, Drizzt.” He replied.

Drizzt:

I walked over to an empty table and pulled out my sketch pad and pencil. I hunched over it and started doodling away as I always did so that maybe everyone would leave me alone. I listened to the ambience of my surroundings primarily to keep alert to anyone who might decide to give me grievance but also maybe to compartmentalize what drove me here to my hiding place in the first place. I would deal with the turmoil but right now isn’t the time nor do I have the energy.

Things were much easier when Riju was still around. She’d either find a way to make me laugh and forget that I was miserable in the first place or find the my oppressor and exact justice. But now that she’s in college do I see that maybe I’ve been too reliant upon my family. I need to find my own strength on my own the way they did.

It was a bittersweet release of stress to draw since it was the very thing that Agitha, my main tormenter, would bully me about. She would claim that I had no talent or future in drawing and when that I wasn’t ‘man’ enough when I would crack under the stress and start crying. It didn’t help that a couple teachers were on board of the claim that there wasn’t a real career in drawing despite the fact that I know commissioning as a free lancer was a thing. I couldn’t take this to my parents though. They’ve been under stress recently and I don’t need to dump my issues on them.

Today’s theme of my doodles was my imaginations if my family were in a more fantasy setting. I drew mom as a sorceress and a ruler of a people who did shadow magic. I moved onto Riju. I thought about it while i drew her face in and then I just a came t a decision, my sketch pad disappeared as if I didn’t have it out to begin with. Before I could even contemplate the fate of my sketchpad, I felt a strong hand nab me by the back of my collar and practically tossed me against the wall. I slammed into it with a thud and before I could bounce back, a hand pressed against my throat and I instinctively grappled onto the hand with both of my own as to make sure to retain as much airway as possible while on my tippy toes.

“What have we here?” A girl’s mockingly curious voice piped up.

I was still recovering from the assault, but I didn’t need to refocus my vision to recognize Agatha’s voice. And if that was Agitha, no doubt it was Takaya who held me against the wall. He and Agitha were dating and basically Takaya was Agitha’s attack dog. He ‘insisted’ people refer to him by his self appointed nickname ‘Tingle’. I made the mistake of calling it a dumb nickname and let’s just say I’m now his favorite punching bag.

My vision finally refocused and there sure enough was Tingle with a shit eating grin as he held me aloft and watched as Agitha was observing my work. Flipping through the pages. She shook her head in mocking disappointment “Tsk tsk. You haven’t been listening to me after all, Izzy.” her voice was venomous as she chastised me. “Looks like I’m going to have to take drastic measures.”

Seeing what she was about to do I started trying to squirm out of Tingle’s grasp to not avail as he tightened his grip to discourage me from trying any further. Then came the tearing. I watched mortified as Agitha proceeded to tear the pages first out of my sketchpad and then in quarters before letting them fall to the ground. I begged her to stop tears streaming from my eyes as they fell on deaf ears. She then came to the sketch I made that was actually a project for class. She waved it tauntingly at my face and began to do the same to it as she did the others but more slowly this time.!

Out of pure desperation, I went down on Tingle’s arm practically sinking my teeth as I bit hard. I didn’t expect it to work but it seems Tingle wasn’t as tough as I thought or his guard was down as he withdrew his arm to cradle the injury. As soon as I felt the release I ducked and dove for the torn scraps that were my sketches while simultaneously dodging, Tingle’s swipe at me to recover. Once clear of him, I sprung upright and shoulder barged Agitha knocking her to the floor on her butt. I scooped the sketchbook and my art project she only was halfway from the first tear.

Now in panic, I sprinted for the door and ran towards the nearest exit. Not giving a damn that it was still the middle of the school day. I easily dodged a couple hall monitors who were caught off guard. The first one wasn’t expecting any activity while the second didn’t expect me. I charged out of the building and kept going.

I left the school grounds, the block, and still kept going. I slowed my pace to a walk once I reached the outskirts of town where the school was now about a mile or less away from. With my mind no longer in panic mode and the adrenaline rush starting to ebb, I was able to reflect that I had just went AWOL from school. And with my recent attendance record not as great as it could be… well let’s just say, I won’t just get a simple slap on the wrist. Came across a bridge the went over a shallow stream. I looked to see if anyone was coming. They probably called the police or my parents by now and I just wanted to be alone.

I got off the road and went under the bridge sitting against one side of the arch. I loosened my grip on the scraps of my drawings to fully assess the damage. My art project was almost torn in half practically hanging on by a thread. The rest of my sketches were barely recognizable. I felt my a tightening of my chest. I felt the tears coming up but tried to suppress them. Reminding myself that I needed to toughen up because I had to be the perfect kid for mom and dad because I messed up so many times already with me skipping school to avoid Agitha and some teachers who insisted I couldn’t make it as an artist. But then the force of the words of doubt and mockery that people have said and the pressure of it all and the flood gates burst.

I clenched my drawings in a tight hug, not giving a damn anymore if they were ruined by either being crushed by my arms or my tears. It didn’t matter anymore. Nothing was coming together for me. How long i cried? I couldn’t tell. My mind was about to venture into darker places of what next but my thoughts were interrupted by a loud noise. It was low and rumbling. My curiosity helped stop my tears enough to hear the noise and register it when it went off again. It was the engine brake of a semi. Dad always rolled his eyes whenever we were on the road and complained about it since he has to hear it all the time being a trucker himself. I smirked at the brief memory but my confusion won the day because shortly after, I heard the sound of the air parking brakes being applied. The closest place for truck wasn’t even within five miles of where I was.

I dropped my stuff and crept to the side of the bridge I knew to be opposite of where the truck was now idling. I went up the steep bank just enough to peak above the asphalt and keep a low profile so the driver didn’t see me. As soon as I saw the truck, I immediately recognized it as dad’s. I started to panic because I wasn’t ready for this confrontation. But my curiosity kept me watching to see why he was there. Maybe he had to get something done that required him to pull over. After a few minutes, with nothing happening, I slinked back down under the bridge. Maybe if I grab my stuff and get moving now, he’ll won’t notice. But as I rounded the corner, I found out why I wasn’t seeing any activity. The time it took me to creep up to the place where I was spying on his truck, was all the time dad needed to get to where I was.

He was crouched on the ground frantically looking through the pile of torn pages while he held my phone in his hand. Apparently it fell out of my pocket. I took a step back to avoid detection but I stepped on a twig. I for a brief moment hoped he didn’t hear that but I didn’t need to see his head snap around in my direction to know my hope was in vain.

He had at first, a look of terror and worry that then morphed into determination and I couldn’t tell if it was hurt or anger. I didn’t get more time to look because he charged at me. Fear overwhelmed me as I couldn’t decipher what he was doing so I closed my eyes and braced for anything but what he did next still took me by surprise.

As I raised my hands in some sort of feeble defense, I felt both his arms go straight under mine on either side and wrap around literally lifting me off the ground and almost pulling me into a crushing hug. I didn’t realize how tired I was from everything that I didn’t even entertain any thought to resist. But I knew even at my strongest I wouldn’t have been able to break free. He had his chin resting on my shoulder and though i couldn’t see his face, i could feel the tears being absorbed into my shirt. In an instant, I gave up my attempt to suppress my emotions and returned the hug. After a few seconds, Dad withdrew and clasped his hands on my shoulders and demanded direct eye contact by keeping his head a foot away from mine.

In a shaky but commanding voice, he said, “Drizzt Zorah Diver! What the hell were you thinking!”

I would have gleaned he was mad since his filter would slip when he’s mad, but this time I knew he was worried sick like the one time I tried to extract a broken ground prong out of a live outlet with pliers till he intervened and asked and asked the same question he just did. “I… uh….” I meekly started to explain but I couldn’t find the words to explain my fleeing school grounds. That and I was distracted by him went to looking me all over.

His eyes landed at my throat and gently traced something with his finger. He looked at me with deadly and primal but silent rage. Mom always called him ‘Little Wolf’ but right now I saw the alpha about poised to strike. I knew it wasn’t at me but didn’t stop me from shaking a little. “Who?” was all he asked in a low gruff and demanding voice.

“It’s n nothing.” I tried to downplay it but he wasn’t wavered.

“The hell it is!” he dismissed, raising voice slightly before asking again, “Who did this!?”

Part of me wanted to drop Agitha’s and Tingle’s names and watch them get their comeuppance, but the rage I saw in dad, wouldn’t have ended well for anyone. That and his look alone was too terrifying to form any words. He must have sensed my fear somehow because he immediately closed his eyes, took a breath, reopened them. His primal rage subsided. At least for now. He altered his original question. “Was this a teacher?”

“What?!” I asked suprised. “No!”

“Student?”

”I…”

“How long?” He asked. I knew he determined that not only was the answer to his question was yes, but also that it was a bully who has been tormenting me for a while.

I didn’t answer but looked away. I didn’t want to face the consequences of ratting them out. “I’m fi…” I started to say but dad interrupted me.

“Since the middle of junior year?” Dad asked.

It seemed specific and I realized it then when I first got a detention for absence without a note. He was almost accurate since Agitha decided I was her prime target for anything. Knowing I couldn’t hide anything anymore, I nodded. “A couple months before that but yeah.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Dad asked as his expression turned to hurt and worry.

“I didn’t want to burden you or mom anymore than I have.”

Dad’s face went to serious determination as he said, “Bull shit!”

“Huh?” I replied. Confused since that was my genuine reason.

“Why would you be a burden?”

I explained everything to him. Agitha, the teachers, what i saw from him and mom. All of it. He listened. When I was done, he drew me into a hug as I cried.

When I calmed down a bit, he said, “Seriously what made you think you had to burden this alone? It’s my job and my pleasure to help you.”

“You wouldn’t get it.” I experienced.

“Come again?” Dad pulled away and placed his hands on his hips.

“You never were bullied. Or have everyone doubt your choice of career. I challenged.

Without blinking, he replied, “Wanna bet?”

I was baffled. I knew dad wasn’t bluffing but I could never imagine someone like Agitha and Tingle seeing him and thinking ‘target acquired’. My curiosity won and I asked, “You?”

He nodded silently then said, “The methods and reasons were different but I too was bullied.”

“But you never let anyone get under your skin!” I said even more shocked. “Not at least without breaking a limb.”

He chuckled, “Is that how you see me?”

”Kinda.” I said admittedly.

“It’s true I don’t care about what others say now, but I won’t go to extreme lengths to correct them. Back then however, I was far more timid and soft spoken. Let’s just say some of your mother’s personality rubbed off on me. As for my career, I wanted to be an actor once but I listened to the doubters and chose to be a trucker. I wasn’t as brave as you in that regard”

I was surprised by his admittance to his career dilemma but what had me more curious was his past with bullying. “Oh, ok.” I said. “How did you handle your bully?”

“I ignored her.” He started. “And when I realized why she acted the way she did. I showed compassion. Because the tables turned against her.”

A bit skeptical but looking for any means to stop Agitha, I asked “And how did that turn out.”

He pondered the question and said, “It was a slow burn, but eventually we wound up married.”

I dry heaved I so was repulsed. “What?! You expect me to…”

My objection was interrupted by dad’s laughter. “Heavens no!” He said.

“Then what good will that do me? I want her to leave me alone, I don’t want to start dating her!” I asked.

“I didn’t say that did I?” Dad said once he finally stopped wheezing from his laughter. “A relationship shouldn’t derive from pity. No we were very close friends then. It was about eight years after high school that we started dating”

I was about to ask him to elaborate but then a more pressing question came up as I realized he said he married his bully. “Wait…. What?”

He cocked his head “What?”

“You mean to tell me…. Mom?!” I asked.

He solemnly nodded not needing me to ask the question in full.

”But…” I started, but a million questions flooded my mind. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“A, you never asked.” He answered matter-of-factly, “B, we don’t keep it a secret but at the same time I don’t bring it up unless she does because she to this day regrets what she did, and C, If either of us knew about what you were facing, it probably would’ve been brought up then.”

“Oh.” I said, digesting his words. “Would mom be willing to talk about it if I asked?”

“Oh, no doubt.” He said unflinchingly.

And you’re sure….” I was about to ask but dad’s phone started to ring. But he immediately hit a button on his headset and the phone went silent. But he did wince.

“You could’ve answered that.” I told him.

“Don’t worry.” He said dismissively. “I’ll call back but right now I’m focused on my son.”

I couldn’t help but feel a little bit better hearing that but I had to ask, “Who was it on the phone?”

“I said…” Dad started but it clicked finally for me since I was able to think clearer.

“It was mom wasn’t it?”

“…yeah.” He said solemnly now not hiding the fact he knew he probably put a target on his back. He then waved me towards his truck, “Come on. Let’s face the gallows together.”

”What?!” I asked.

“You’ll survive.” He reassured me, “She’ll have some choice words about you making her worried to death, but I’ll probably sleeping in the doghouse tonight.”

“At least Shade is a good cuddler.” I laughed as I started to follow him.”

I sidled along side him and he slung his arm over my shoulder…

Winter Driver's Ed (read my message in the comments before/after reading this!!!)

I was watching the snow fall in the living room window. Already about five inches have settled and the plows would occasionally pass by as they worked to clear the roads. The sun went down about an hour ago I think but with the clouds I wouldn't be able to tell exactly when. Although out of curiosity I looked at the clock to realize it was darker than expected for only being six in the evening. Mom was reading a book. She would occasionally eye my brother, Drizzt, so to make sure nothing too exciting happened. As of right now he was just doodling on a peice of paper with a pencil. Nothing harmless. Then I realized with Drizzt, that could be famous last words.

I didn't mind the snow but that opinion somewhat changed when I just recently got my learner's permit. Dad makes driving in the snow easy and before I plopped behind the wheel, I thought I would be excited too. But that was after I accidently put a dent in his truck while he was trying to teach me how to parallel park. I was surprised he didn't show any hint of being upset about it. Although I hear teens say all the time that their parents will kill them for damaging their car. I just knew somehow dad wasn't like that. He just spent most of the aftermath trying to reassure me that everyone starts where I was.

I heard clomping through the house and saw mom look up. "Honey, wouldn't it be better to wait till the snow stops? We're not going anywhere."

"I would agree." He said, "but I thought right now would be the perfect time to do something else."

"It's a little dark to throw you in a snowbank." Mom retorted, giving us all a chuckle.

"Raincheck." Dad replied. "Hey, Riju."

I jumped a little as I was still somewhat entranced by the snow. and turned to face him. He had his Carhartt on that always seemed to emanate the slightest hint of diesel, his black beanie, boots, and glove on. Unsure of what idea was going on in his head. I just knew that there was. "Yeah dad?"

"Suit up. Let's go." He said vaguely.

"Where are we going?"

"You'll see." He said with a mischievous look in his eye.

I looked to mom for any hope of clarification where she just stared blankly back at me saying, "I have no ideas sometimes." before smirking, letting me know she knew more than she was letting on and she didn't care if I saw through it.

"... O-okay." I said wearily.

"When have I steered you wrong?" Dad asked, pretending to be hurt.

I left that inquiry unanswered and bundled up myself. I walked over to where he was and we stepped outside. He walked towards his truck and hopped inside. I did the same and he drove off. "So are you going to tell me now?" I asked.

"Eventually." He corrected and kept driving.

As we drove I watched the snow fall down and all the other cars who's driver's apparently forgot how to drive in winter even though we were in the middle of it and it wasn't even our first snowfall. Roads were clearer of traffic than normal but I just chalked it off as people not wanting to drive in the snow if they didn't have to. After ten minutes, we got to a half occupied mall parking lot where the cars were closer to the stores so the pedestrians wouldn't have to walk as far in the cold. The plows were doing what they could but focusing on the heavier traffic areas. Dad turned to a more abandoned part of the parking lot that I swear looked like a quarter mile away from even the furthest lamp post. He got out in a spot I knew there was no lines for parking and got out. He kept his truck running and went to the bed to fish out his shovel. He walked away from the truck with it and after about forty feet, he cleared a good twenty feet strip of snow making look like a lane on the road. He examined his handy work then returned the shovel to the bed, closed the tonneau cover, and hopped back in the driver seat. He drove the truck so it was on one end of the cleared path, turned a knob on his left under the steering wheel, and hopped out again. This time he went around the truck and opened my door.

"Ok let's go." Was all he said.

But it finally dawned on me. He was going to teach me how to drive in the snow. My mind scrambled for an excuse, "I forgot my permit." I said as I did legitimately forgot.

He reached inside his inner coat pocket and pulled out my wallet where I kept it and handed it to me. "No you didn't." He smiled

My anxiety was slowly starting to rise. "But I dented your truck last time." I said.

"My truck can be easily repaired or replaced." He explained calmly. "You, on the other hand, m' dear, are a bit more difficult." He then said with a smirk as I knew he was joking about replacing.

"I... I'm not ready." I half-heartedly protested.

He placed a gloved hand on my shoulder. "Riju." He started even more calmly and reassuringly. "I wouldn't be doing this if I felt you were reasonably not ready. What's rule number one in operating anything?"

"Don't let it intimidate you." I reluctantly recited.

"And that's why we're in a big open space. As long as you follow my instructions, you won't even do any damage should your response time be a little off. You and I both know that eventually you will have to drive in the winter. Sure driver's ed. might teach you how, but that's going to be in books and that doesn't translate to real life experience. I know you and how to drive in the winter properly, and I want to well equip you for when I can no longer be there to help."

I just stared at the parking lot still covered in snow. My breathing had calmed a bit but I wasn't feeling ready just yet. "I don't know dad."

I felt his arms wrap around me and pull me into an awkward hug since the truck forced him to duck. I leaned in. I heard him say. "Do you trust me?"

"Of course." I said thinking I knew where he was going with this question.

"And I trust that you have the knowledge to learn and master this task ahead."

I took a deep breath and unbuckled my seat belt. I got out and he climbed in. I walked around to the driver seat and hopped in. He and I were practically the same height so I didn't have to do any adjustments really to either seat or mirrors. "Ready." I told him.

"Now right now I have her in two wheel drive. You know what that means?" He said in his instructor voice.

"In this vehicle the two rear tires are doing the spinning front two are in neutral." I said recalling the knowledge.

"Good." He said. "In regular sunny conditions, two wheel and four wheel drive don't mean that much as far as basic driving goes. However, in snow, it's a heap of a difference. We only have four points of contact on the ground. And only half the power to control what direction we go. I normally drive in four so i have a drive tire on any point of asphalt I can to keep her on the road. I'm teaching you two wheel in case your first car is one."

"Right." I said steeling my nerves.

"Now, I want you to give her some gas and stop still on this clear strip I made."

I did so. The truck lurched forward and as I stepped on the brake, it stopped in not time.

"Remember this feeling." My dad lectured. "Now, I want you to go forward not as aggressively but step on the brake like you're trying to avoid hitting something in front of you."

"O-okay." I said nervously as I knew he meant in the snow that was still three to five inches.

I went forward and stepped on the brake. But the brake vibrated and the truck kept rolling forward. There was nothing in front of us but in a panic, I steered the wheel right and left as if that would stop the truck. Eventually the brake stopped vibrating and the truck came to a complete stop. I looked at dad and he saw the panic in my eyes. He clearly was trying to stifle a snicker. "What?!" Was all I could say.

"That was the ABS kicking in." He explained

"The what?" I asked

"Anti-brake system." He explained. "Most cars have this system in place so when the tires don't have any traction on the ground, they don't lock up when you apply the brakes. The worst thing you can do is lock up your tires in snow because that's surrendering any traction you had. On a car that doesn't have abs, you would have to pump your brakes but in here, you can apply them normally."

"Why couldn't you have told me that?" I asked.

"I just did."

"Befor..."

"It's better for you to experience it first hand, hence that empty parking lot."

I saw the logic in his words so I calmed down. And in retrospect as I through the side and rear view mirrors, we didn't go that far. "Okay."

"Now you know how to come to a stop in normal conditions, with snow, you want to increase your stopping distance with still in mind that faster you're going, the longer it'll take. Now I want you to get to 15 miles per hour immediately and apply that."

Feeling a bit more confident, I nodded and stepped on the gas hard. The engine reved up and we crawled forward slower than I anticipated but I felt the rear fish tale left. On instinct, I veered the steering wheel left and eased up on the gas. The truck seemed to gain traction and moved forward more nominally. I eased off the gas and slowly applied the brake eventually coming to a complete stop once again. "Very good!" Dad replied more impressed than I anticipated.

"What?" I asked confused knowing I achieved something he was about to cover again.

"You want to keep your tires in line of the direction your goin at all times outside of turning. Since we're in two wheel drive, the rear tire were raring to go where the front were more reluctant so the momentum swung the truck in the direction of least resistance. You steered into the slide which will counter going sideways, and took your foot off the gas without braking so the tires would still roll but it wasn't causing a worse fishtail. If you ever feel yourself sliding, never brake and turn into the slide. You always want to straighten the vehicle before correcting your position on the road."

I couldn't ignore the dopamine hit I felt when I realized this. Without instruction, I maneuvered the truck around the parking lot and in little to no time, I felt like it was starting to become second nature. I stopped and turned to dad. "I think I have it." I said proudly.

"Don't let that confidence get the better of you." He corrected me. "Know your limits, drive slower than you would normally, and be ever alert."

"Is that why you come home more exhausted in the winter from work?" I asked seeing how daunting that sounded.

"Exactly." He said. "Now wanna do one more thing?" He asked with his 'I shouldn't but we're going to' smirk.

"Um... sure." I said.

"I want you to turn the wheel in any direction all the way and then just floor it. After a few seconds brake hared."

Knowing what we're about to do I did as he instructed and and the truck spun with us hooting and hollering if not laughing. We did donuts a few more times till after we stopped on the third one, we got our bearings again only to notice the two squad cars blinking bright red and blue lights.

"Uh..." I said aloud starting to panic but dad leaned over and reached for his wallet.

"Get your ID out and put the truck in park." Dad instructed calmly. And I did so.

The two officers made they're way to us going one to either side of the truck. The officer tapped the glass on my side and I rolled the window down. "Hey, miss." the officer greeted in a casual yet commanding tone "mind explaining what's going on?"

"Hey, officer." I heard my dad pipe up from the passenger window. "Just teaching my daughter how to drive in the winter."

"Did that include the donuts we saw you doing?" The officer asked him.

"All about traction and control and I chose a abandoned space to do that." He said matter of factly."

The officer shown his flashlight around the parking lot following some of the tracks me made. then turned back to us. "Can you show us your licenses, registration and proof of insurance please." He then asked professionally but not revealing where he sat on our decisions.

We complied and the officers walked back to their squad cars talking amongst themselves I heard dad talk to me, "You're doing great. Keep calm and respectful."

"Will we get a ticket?" I asked still worried.

"I don't know. Technically we could be written up for reckless driving, but there may be a chance they'll do just a written or verbal warning." He said

The cops after a bit came back and I rolled the windows back down. "So here's the deal." He started as he handed our stuff back. "We were called on report of some 'hooligans'" He said with air quotes, "tearing up the parking lot. What I saw is in definition of reckless driving. That being said, as a father myself, I do appreciate you taking the time to teach your kid. So what I'm going to do, is ask that you stop, you get to where you need to go, and drive safely and responsibly here on. Think you can do that for me?" The officer asked me in a more relaxed tone but still with authority.

"Yes, sir." I said

"Then I'll let you off with a verbal warning." He stated. "You two have a nice evening and you Miss Riju, take the time to take heed of what your father taught you and appreciate it because quite honestly, I've been on this job for five years and I've only seen a handful of fathers taking this initiative."

With that he waved goodbye. He and his partner went to their respective squad cars. I couldn't help but smile warmly that I did indeed have a father that was spending time teaching me this although I expected to see some gray hairs when we got home.

"Well done." I heard him say. "Now turn on four wheel drive and let's go home.

"Thanks dad." I said as I drove us home as if I never was anxious to drive in snow to begin with.

Scheming (What happened after Riju left)

(AU POV:Midna) (In the story “A Legacy” the family shared their favorite memory or lesson learned with/from Mokoto (me) This and the others to come are their stories)

Mokoto sat down, oblivious to what’s going on. He watched as Riju dashed towards the door, opening it, gave me a wink, and disappeared. I recovered from my being flustered before Mokoto turned around so to keep my cool and confident composure. It helped that he was also feeling a bit nervous. Any untrained eye wouldn’t have been able to tell, but I’ve known this guy since we were thirteen, and he’s been always awkward around women, except for Riju obviously. It was more women around his age, though my other childhood friend, Purah who was part of my ‘clique’ back then, and Urbosa insisted that it is only when I’m around. To be fair I never seen him interact with anyone when he wasn’t aware I was nearby since we were teenagers when he was a hardcore introvert.

But this evening, he was nervous. I think he caught on that something is up as he watched his daughter leave and how she was acting. “How was work?” I asked, hoping to distract him from catching on as well as delaying the opportunity Riju gave me though I was determined to take it.

“Hmmm?” He said as he snapped his head up from his drink as if I suddenly just appeared before him.

I giggled as I asked again, “I said, ‘How was work?’.”

He kinda deflated, “It was… fine”

I knew he loved his job, but sometimes it was exhausting for him. “How many four wheelers wanted a death wish today?” I asked knowing that the usual suspects were to blame for his demeanor. He referred non-commercial vehicles as four wheelers for the obvious reason that they had four wheels.

“How much time do you have?” he dryly replied.

“But you’re a semi. Surely your forty ton office can stop and turn on a dime.” I said making sure my tone was obviously being sarcastic because I knew this was a touchy subject for him which he picked up and a smirk tugged at his face in appreciation.

After a few seconds of silence, Mokoto asked, “How are you and Riju getting along?”

“She is a sweetheart.” I replied honestly. “Congratulations are in order by the way.”

He ducked his head in embarrassment as be smiled. A nervous reaction I always found adorable. “Thanks.” he said

“I’m glad she found a home and that it’s yours. And that your relationship is at the point where she’s calling you father?” I asked.

“She told you about that?” He asked his face nuetral.

“Yes and how it was the slip of the tongue the first time.” I told him at which point he relaxed with a smile.

“Yeah. I was worried about if she aged out. It’s rare for teens to be adopted and I didn’t want to see Riju go through that. It was surprising that Buliara approved it let alone entertained the idea when i approached her with it.”

“I’m glad.” I said resting a hand on his subconsciously before realizing what I was doing and nonchalantly withdrawing it so as to not make a big deal about it.

The bell rang and we both turned to see a rather boisterous bunch of teenagers walked in, clearly in prom attire. It seemed like two couples walked in. A second later they calmed their chatter to match the atmosphere as they got in line. I turned just in time to hear Mokoto mutter, “That’ll be Riju soon enough.”

“Remember prom senior year?” I asked him

His cheeks subtly reddened then answered, “How can I forget.”

“You were a nervous wreck dancing.”

“Well first off, you ditched your prom date.”

“Groose was being a jerk and I finally had enough of it.” I said defensively.

“I don’t blame you.” He said reassuringly, “But I was worried that would paint a target on my back when you hung out with me for the remaining three quarters of prom and all of after prom.”

“I made sure to keep an eye on you two. He didn’t try anything.”

“And I thank you for that.”

“You better.” I replied jokingly which he smiled.

“I also was a nervous wreck cause I never danced with someone outside theatre before.”

“That makes sense.” I said, “I never said it back then, but it was fun. Hanging out with you that is.”

“It was.” He said reminiscently.

“Getting cocky now?” I asked in a snarky tone.”

“Uh… I meant hanging out with you!” He said in a mild panic till he calmed down once I was laughing.

I got a notification on my phone from an unknown number. I looked and it said ‘Hows it going? This is Riju btw. Dad gave me your number in case of emergencies.’

I replied back, ‘Mind if I barrow your father once he has dropped you off?

Go for it! 😉’

I put my phone away and turned my attention back to Mokoto, “We should hang out again. I said.”

“When do you have in mind?” He asked taken aback by the change of subject but clearly not objecting to it.”

“I’m free this evening and can meet you somewhere after you drop off Riju.” On cue Riju re-entered the cafe and walked towards us.

“But I have to…” Was all he could say before Riju interrupted him.

“I can feed Shade, dad.” She said referring to the wolf they adopted. “Between the two of us, we can hold down the fort.”

Mokoto spun his head in surprise to see her back so soon. “Are you sure?”

“I have a black belt in tae kwon do, I have a wolf as a companion, and we live in a safe neighborhood. I think I’ll manage. You two have fun.” She said then made a mocking older and stern face. “But you better bring her back homr before midnight.”

I burst out laughing as Mokoto’s cheeks when bright red, “It’s not like that!” He retorted in a hushed but panicked expression.

“Whatever you say, dad.” Makeela said smiling. “Two lifelong friends hanging out on February fourteenth. Nothing to read there at all.”

I was doubling over I was laughing too hard as all Mokoto said playfully, “You’re impossible.” as hr got up and collected his and Riju’s things.

“Love you too, dad.” Riju said with a wide smile as she took the compliment.

“I’ll just follow you.” I told them as I got ready to leave myself.

Mokoto led the way as Riju and I hung back, following him.

“You’re welcome.” Riju said with a smug expression.

“You are a clever young lady.” I said now that my fit of laughter was over and I too was probably blushing.

We got into our respective vehicles and I followed them excited to see where this journey would lead.

A Legacy (Part 2)

“Mom? Would you like to start?” Riju asked as everyone looked my way.

I thought for a moment and finally made my choices to each prompt presented. I felt my lips curve into a small smile as I recalled meeting Mokoto for the first time. “I met him first in about eighth grade or so.” I started, “He was a shy kid. Never talked to anyone and avoided social interaction. I thought him pathetic and would pick on him constantly.”

Everyone besides Riju and Drizzt understably reeled back in shock, “Really?!”

I chuckled, “Yeah. I was the, mean popular girl back then.” I confessed. A brief grimace of regret came in went. I took a deep breath and continued, “He never retaliated. Just ran away. Made him cry a few times. My curiosity drove me to continue this to see if would finally snap and fight back. The closest he came was shoving me away and I saw he immediately regretted it. a couple months later a transfer student came along and started stealing my popularity to the point I wad being bullied too. And instead of rubbing it in my face like the victims of my bullying, he would help me up or just listen to me vent. After a while we became inseparable to graduation. I knew I liked him but my pride wouldn’t allow me to admit it and wanted him to ask me out. I should have swallowed my pride and asked him because little did I know he felt the same and I wouldn’t have to wait for his own daughter,” I gave Riju a greatful look to which she smiled proudly, “To finally get the ball rolling five years later.”

“I was wondering how you two met.” Liara piped up.

I gave my granddaughter a smile and then continued. “That was my first impression and happy memory, as for a lesson I learned, well that is compassion and humility is not a weakness.”

Everyone remained silent as they took in the story. After about thirty seconds, I turned to Riju who took the que and a deep breath. The began to share, “When dad first became my new foster parent, I refused to make any emotional connection because I was convinced that I would just move again or age out of the system entirely. I wasn’t really over my biological mother’s death yet. But I soon realized that my resolve to remain in this state was feeble as he made me feel safe and comfortable as he somehow managed to keep my foster siblings and I out of jail and the hospital.”

Everyone laughed. “As for a favorite memory, was the time he taught me how to drive in the winter by us going to an abandoned empty parking lot covered in snow and drove around doing donuts and what not till the police arrived and politely asked us to stop. And why I’m never buffing that dent in the pickup.” She said eyeing her husband.

“I’m glad you found out about my attempt to buff it out as a surprise gift.” Sid replied, “I would’ve felt terrible.” Sid then side hugged Riju.

“I think dad would’ve had something to say too since he kept the dent before he gave it to me once his driving days were behind him.” She replied in a snarky tone. “As for a lesson I learned from him, I guess it would be, however I learned this from both you two,” She said pointing at me and Drizzt. “That family isn’t just who we’re born with or marry into but who we choose. Drizzt?”

Drizzt sat up and immediately started, “I can’t really tell my first impression since I was born in this family but I always felt loved by dad. I know I was a little … energetic… as a kid.”

I couldn’t help but give out a short laugh at his understatement and reached to my left where he was sitting. “Only a little?” I asked

He smiled and conceded, “Okay maybe I was high spirited.” he said with a chuckle.”

I ruffled his hair, “That’s better. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.” I commented reassuring him that enjoyed raising him.

He slicked his hair and then continued, “I can’t choose a favorite but all the times he would go along with my vivid imaginations when I was a kid. Also when he saved me from…” He stopped when he noticed his nieces cocking their heads to the side, “Let’s just say I was at a low place in my life.” Brie kissed his cheek and gave him a hug . I gave him a meaningful look to let him know I knew what he was talking about and so did the others who were old enough to be told the story.

“The lesson I remember most from dad was, “It’s okay to express yourself and your feelings. If one person cares, that outweighs the dozen who don’t give a…” again he looked at his nieces then me. “darn.”

“Thank you for sharing, Drizzt.” I said.

I turned to Sid who started. “My first impression of him? I was absolutely terrified.”

“What?!” Riju turned to him in surprise. I however was snickering as I knew where the story was coming from.

“Absolutely.” Sid said, not missing a beat.

“You told me you liked him.” Riju said confused.

“And I did. After I realized who he really was like.”

“Wait a second, the first time you picked me up for our date…” Riju recalled then her eyes went wide. “I thought you were just having the ‘just started dating’ nerves! What did he do to you?”

Sid laughed and then said, “You forgot something and needed to use the restroom. He took the opportunity to usher me onto the porch as we waited for you. He placed a hand on my shoulder with a firm grip, and said, ‘Riju had told me good things about you.’ I was feeling hopeful till his face got serious and frightening. ‘However, whatever you do to my daughter, I will return the favor to you ten-fold’.”

Riju just stared at him bewildered. “Why didn’t you tell me?” She finally asked.

With a smile Sid said, “I was just that scared. And he kept true to his word. As time went on and our relationship got more serious, he made me feel more and more like part of the family. And really was a father to me more than my father could ever hope to be.”

Riju took a minute to process the story then replied, “Now that I think about it, that does sound like him. I just never heard him make a threat like that before.”

“I even asked what he meant by that, he said, ‘That’s up to you’ and left it at that.”

I chimed in, “He was having the typical paternal anxiety that dad’s get when their daughter starts dating. I made sure I was the one up when you two came back that night. I recall as Riju was getting ready for bed, Sid asked me about what he said, I explained that he was looking out for her and made sure that anyone who wanted to date his daughter wouldn’t dare mistreat or harm her.”

“That’s when I decided I liked him because sure enough when we crossed paths at the store, he was in a good mood and he even bought me lunch.” He added.

I replied, “I held the same regard as to Riju’s safety but I saw it unnecessary to give my own warning when I saw that you received the message from him crystal clearly and afterwards when the date went well and you were a gentleman to her.”

“Yeah I had a feeling all three of you would have a say should I have had less than savory intentions.” Sid smiled as he looked at me and Drizzt who just nodded with a smirk on his face.

“You three.” Riju said with a slight smile as she was still baffled by the story she was hearing for the first time.

“As for the lesson,” Sid continued, “He basically was the one who taught me how to be a father. Not by anything he said but just by me watching him interact with Riju and Drizzt.”

Both my kids smiled in appreciation. After a few seconds Brie started her turn with no hesitation. “I didn’t like him admittedly when I first met him. I was a bit of a brat letting my status of ‘daughter of the CEO’ trope get into my head where I thought myself a princess. My favorite memory is actually when he kinda put me in my place. This was even before I met Drizzt. My car blew a tire and I was waiting on the side of the road so long that my hazards ran my battery dead since I didn’t know I had a bad alternator. I tried flagging the few cars who were driving by but no one stopped and I was getting frustrated as well as drenched since it was also raining. I just gave up and plopped myself in my car to sulk till all the sudden my rear view mirror was flooded with headlights of a pickup. After asking what’s wrong, I told him what and he asked me to help. I reluctantly got out of my car. He handed me his jumper cables and told me to connect them to my battery while he positioned his truck closer to my hood. I stared at them blankly since I never was taught and he saw as much.”

“Didn’t you have to learn to do that at driver’s ed?” I asked.

“My dad hired a private instructor who basically taught me how to keep the car on the road.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah, my dad didn’t really follow up on the curriculum. So after telling him I didn’t know how to do any basic car maintenance, he decided to teach me. I thought he would just do it and talk through each step, but he had me do almost everything.”

“Sounds like das alright.” Riju said, “He taught me the same way before even considering letting me drive.”

Brie nodded with a smile, “I complained about his method but he said, ‘You won’t retain anything if I just show you and next time I’ll likely not be there to help again’. At the time I was not happy with that but stopped opposing it as he walked me through finding the battery, finding the positive and ground, and hooking it up. I was estatic when the car turned on. He then instructed me how to change the tire to the spare. After all that was done, I was so relieved that I, without thinking, gave him a hug.”

“He never told me this story in full.” I said. All he told me when I asked why he was soaked to the bone was that he helped someone with car trouble. Though to be fair we had an appointment we had to get to so I didn’t press for details. Though it explains why you two got along almost immediately when Drizzt introduced you to us.” I said with a hearty chuckle.

“And he was right about the hands on approach, I had to reteach my dad when he blew a tire. Lesson I took away from him was there are things that you need to know no matter your gender or class because it was kinda refreshing to do something myself instead of having things just handed to me.”

“That’s a wonderful story, Brie. I thought you or Drizzt would mention the time he went ‘EWWWW’ at your wedding.”

They both laughed hysterically. Then Brie replied, “I was so confused and Drizzt wasn’t helping as he was laughing so hard and trying not to drop me while we kissed.” She paused to continue laughing. “It wasn’t till later Drizzt explained he used to do that to you two and he was simply getting payback.”

“I elbowed him for you.” I responded. “I’m just glad you took the joke well.” I smiled. “He was always.. all…” I tried to finish the sentence but the memories as good as they were subtly miss him more and I began to sob. As I tried my best to hide it by covering my face with my hands, I heard multiple chairs drag across the floor and shortly I was surrounded as everyone gave me a hug.

“Its alright, mom.” Riju reassured me. “You’re not alone”

I was able to calm down and open my eyes enough to see with my limited vision Patricia who was too small to join the huddle peaking up at me in front of me while resting her hands on my knees. Everyone broke the group hug as I reached down to lift her up and place her in my lap and hugged her.

My grandkids then took turns mentioning a favorite memory they had of their grandfather who Liara mentioned the time took her to her first recital when she forgot to mention it to Riju and Sid. And Patricia mentioned the times Mokoto would ‘secretly’, we all knew about it but kept the ruse it was a secret, give her ice cream whenever she visited.

As these stories resonated in my heart, I knew I’d be alright and we’d all keep his memory alive.

A legacy. (Midna, Riju, Drizzt) (Part 1)

I woke up and just stared at the ceiling. For some reason the emotions of missing him refreshed themselves as if I had just lost him yesterday. I told myself that I had moved on and that he would always be with me but for some reason such a conviction wasn’t enough to soften the blow that I was my bed’s sole occupant and he wouldn’t be coming back to hold me in his arms till I fell asleep in the peace that all was right with the world. I breathed a big sigh and got up. I dragged myself to the walk in closet and grabbed the hoodie that used to be his favorite. As I threw it on, memories of either of our best moments with him wearing it and every time i either stole it or he lent it to me started flooding my head. I went back to bed and tried to fall asleep again.

However sleep was clearly not coming back to me as sunlight poured through my bedroom window. I checked the time and saw it was already eight. So I opted to just lie on my back, holding myself as I couldn’t shake this melancholiac feeling. I wasn’t in a hurry to get back up because I knew I had nothing to do today. Such was my schedule now that I retired from my position as CEO of Eastern Chic. Let me tell you that the sudden amount of free time I had when I did was a total whiplash. I still show up at our offices to help things go smoothly as my daughter, Riju, is getting used to her new role as my successor. I knew she had the skill and knowledge to take my place when it came time, but I was originally worried how everyone would see it, as alot of times companies fall into nepotism where the position was filled in by a parent’s child solely because of their relation. And I’ve seen businesses take a dive or straight up close down because the kid didn’t know or care about the company they were taking over. But Riju proved to be even more successful than Urbosa and I were. Urbosa opted to keep her position for now but she is also making her retirement plans.

The next couple of years in my retirement were wonderful as I was able to spend more time with Mokoto who had retired about seven years prior when he was not in the best of health to continue driving a semi. He had to take some convincing but he graciously considered my advice that he was in a good position to retire on his terms than risk any potential tragedy. He used the time wisely as he found hobbies as well as spending more time with our grandchildren and me. He even expressed his joy he found in his new chapter of life.

And sure enough I watched him as if he was the carefree soul I knew before we started dating until his health started to deteriorate. He then started to worry about me and our family as he knew his time was soon. We had many discussions with the family which gave him peace of mind and when he did pass away from old age, it was at total peace. It was because of his health I decided to retire so I could take care and be with him and made sure he was comfortable till he died peacefully. I would’ve been more devastated by his passing if he didn’t advised me to not wish for more time but to focus on the time we had and that I wasn’t alone.

My mind remembered what day it was today and Immediately knew the source of my current state of mind. Today was the first wedding anniversary I would spend without him. But I strengthened my resolve and got back out of bed. After fifty plus years together when he was still here, Mokoto wouldn’t approve of me moping around missing him, so I decided to take an active approach to keep my spirits up. I went into the bathroom to freshen up and take a bath. I was greeted by my reflection in the mirror. My hair had totally gone white with a few hints of copper still remaining. My skin didn’t have its youthful complexion but as Mokoto put it had the makings of a “silver fox”. My age was apparent nonetheless and I thought it good he wasn’t around to see my appearance now. I even said aloud, “At least you don’t have to see this anymore, little wolf. I’m not as beautiful as I used to be.”

“You surely don’t believe that.” I vividly imagined his response would be.

“Well my looks don’t exactly leave you speechless as they once did.” I countered continuing both sides of the conversation as I knew what he would say.

“Well I aint exactly talking right now.” I laughed at his/my joke.

“Cute, but you’re not doing much of anything in that urn.”

“Hey, it was my only chance to have a smoking hot body. Now you stop this bullshit line of thinking. You’re beautiful and you know it. So own it.”

A smile worked its way onto my face as I ended my imaginary conversation with Mokoto. I went about my day with what I considered a good disposition at least till lunch time where it was starting to diminish again as I sat on my adirondack chair on the front porch eating my sandwich as I observed other people going about their day with the occasional wave here and there. I was thinking I should probably do something special this evening in honor of our anniversary when I noticed a familiar diesel pickup make its way down the road and into the driveway.

The engine shut off and a tall woman stepped out of the driver seat. She had scarlet red hair in a braid reaching her lower back. Her eyes were green and had the look of confidence and determination. She wore clothes that were both fashionable yet had a hint of tomboyish qualities. I wasn’t expecting any visitors today but this was a welcomed surprise. As our eyes met her face softened and her smile was both warm and sympathetic. “What are you doing here?” I asked as I started to get up.”

“No, mom.” Riju said, “Stay there, I’ll come to you.”

I stayed standing but as a compromise, I didn’t walk down the steps and waited for her to approach. As she came closer I outstretched my arms which she accepted my hug. We held each other as she said, “I would’ve arrived earlier, but Liara forgot her clarinet and decided to tell me last minute..”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s about time you experienced some of the things you and your brother put me through.” I said teasingly.

“I forgot my notebook only one time and that was because dad moved it and forgot to tell me.” She mildly protested while chuckling at my jab. Then looked at the driveway. “Speaking of my brother, where is Drizzt?”

“He’s coming too?” I asked.

“Yeah, he was supposed to beat me here.”

“To be honest, I wasn’t expecting either of you.” I pointed out. “What brings you here? Shouldn’t you be at work?”

“I’ll explain later.” Riju said as she urged me to sit back down in my chair which I reluctantly did. She went back to her truck to get a couple of sacks whose contents I couldn’t see and she clearly was making an effort to keep it that way and her backpack. She was on the phone now as she closed the truck door with her foot and made her way back. I was about to ask how I could help when apparently whoever she was calling answered. “What’s up? Where are you?” she asked. The paused as she was getting an answer.

“I’m at mom’s where you should’ve been half an hour ago.” another pause.

“Oookay.” She said in a tone that clarity was reached. “Well I’ll keep her busy and will see you when you get here.” With that, she hung up and pocketed her phone.

I gave her an inquisitive look and she responded, “Drizzt forgot about daylights saving time.”

“For a whole month?” I asked.

“Apparently.” She responded as we both laughed.

To be fair to Drizzt, he works from home in his studio as a graphic designer and his work sometimes doesn’t allow for much time outside. So his time management is not as it could be but not horrendously so, since he is able to meet deadlines with projects he is hired for.

Riju ducked inside the house and seemingly put down her stuff because she emerged from the house empty handed and plopped herself down on the second adirondack chair. “So what are you distracting me from that requires you to’keep me busy’.”

With a smirk she answered, “Interesting theory. Care to discuss?”

“You are so like your father.” I responded, knowing I wouldn’t get her to talk. He too was a vault for secrets and a flair for mystery surrounding them.

That got a smile on her face yet a hint of sadness. “Oh I’m sorry, Riju”

She smiled and shook her head. “It’s not your fault, mom.” She said reassuringly. “How are you holding up?”

“I’m doing okay. I…” I was answering till I got interrupted by the sound of a car over revving up its engine.

Riju and I turned to watch a black Panther Evo race its way toward us only slowing down to turn into my driveway and park next to Riju’s truck. A lanky tall, but not as tall as Riju young man stepped out and quickly rummaged through the back of his car. “I know for a fact you were taught to drive better than that young man.” I called to him.

He brought his head up too soon and bumped the back of it against the roof of his car. He then adjusted his movements to raise his head while rubbing the spot on his head he bumped. “Sorry, mom.”

“Your not driving like that with Brie in the car right?” I asked in a more teasing tone.

“Unfortunately, he did today.” I heard a familiar voice call from the passenger side.

“Sorry, honey.” He addressed Brie as she got out of the car with a box and a card shaped envelope.”

“Well come inside.” I said. “I’m not getting younger and this mysterious visit isn’t helping.” I said to lighten the mood.

As Drizzt and his wife joined us, all four of us went inside. When Drizzt crossed the threshold he looked around and I saw a droop in his shoulders and his head slumped making his shoulder length orange hair fall to cover his face. Brie put down the box and envelope and went beside him and gave him a side hug and a knowing glance. Which he then righted himself and continued inside. We all sat around the kitchen table. And Riju spoke first. “As you probably are starting to put together, mom, the reason we came today is because of a surprise we wanted to give you today. We figured that even though you are handling dad’s passing well, even though it has only been about seven months, that today would be especially hard since this is the first time you’ll be spending yours and his anniversary without him.”

They looked at me as I gave an appreciative nod while being touched by the idea. As the. Drizzt added, “Now we won’t be doing much as far as mourning is concerned because we know dad wouldn’t approve.”

“He said try not to greave too much. He knew better than to forbid it outright.” I lightly corrected him.”

Drizzt nodded, acknowledging the fact and continued “We wanted to spend the day together with you to help you and somewhat selfishly us make it a bit easier.”

“That’s sweet of you all.” I said. Fighting some tears that were trying to form.

We heard a third car in the driveway and Riju perked up, “I think that’s Sid and Liara and Patricia.” She said as she walked to the door to meet her husband and daughters. First to emerge was Patricia. An eight year old girl Riju adopted from Ethiopia when she was two. Patricia raced to my side and almost knocked me off my chair as she gave me a hug. “Hi grandma!!” she said enthusiastically.

“Tricia! How many times do I have to tell you to be gentle with grandma?” Sid scolded.

She bowed her head in remorse, “Sorry grandma.”

I reached over and drew her back into an even bigger hug. “It’s alright.” I said then gave Drizzt and knowing look. “I have plenty of experience with such greetings.”

Drizzt smirked and turned to Sid. “To be fair to Trish, she’s alot more gentle than I was when I was younger than her.”

“Really?” Sid asked.

“Trish doesn’t jump. He lunged.” Riju chimed in.

Everyone chuckled, even Drizzt at his own expense. When everything died down, Riju took lead. “I think it would be best if we took turns sharing your first impression of dad, a favorite happy memory, and something you may have learned.”

“An excellent idea.” Brie agreed.

Riju turned to me. “Mom would you like to start?… (to be continued)

A Beautiful Family (PT 2 The gang's all here

“Is that Midna?!” I heard Purah ask surprisingly.

“Drizzt! I can’t see, buddy.” I protested eager to see the dress Midna wouldn’t let me have a sneak peak at.

“Sorry, dad.” Drizzt said, and readjusted his hands so my sight was returned.

After my eyes adjusted again from complete darkness to the lights of the catwalk and the stage lights that some blinked on and off and others panned in sync to the music that seemed to have a lot of bass in it, I finally saw the trio of women. Urbosa was wearing her hair in a high billowing ponytail. She had huge golden hoops earrings. Her top was an Arabic styled crop top on in theme with the name of her and Midna’s company they cofounded called Eastern Chic. It was dark blue for a base color with a flower pattern of green, sky blue, and red centering from the middle and each petal outline in a golden line. She wore a sirwal that went to just below the knee that were dark blue with golden lines swirling about her legs in an intricate pattern. Her eye liner was in a classic wing fashion, and her lipstick was about two shades darker than a sky blue. She had three golden bangles on each wrist. Around her neck she wore a golden choker and two more necklaces that seemed to be one with the choker.

To Urbosa’s left, being flankeded by her and Midna was Riju. She walked down the catwalks as if I only imagined her anxiousness just moments before the show started. As she designed then sold it to Eastern Chic. She would have given it to Midna, but Midna wouldn’t hear it. Her outfit contained a halter top that was primarily navy blue but had three petals of similar shape to a sunflower reaching from either arm round but a few inches short to the center of her chest. Her top stopped just at her abdomen leaving her midriff exposed. At her lower waist, about an inch or two above her hips, she wore an asymmetric skirt that was practically just navy blue with a white asymmetric skirt underneath an inch longer but matching position. At the hem of her skirt had flat metallic ornaments spaced out evenly and hanging like tassels or earrings. Her hair dawned a golden head piece and was in a Cleo Patra bob hairstyle.

But recalling what the other two looked like was no small feat when I laid eyes on Midna. She made me practically forget… well everything including but not limited to my name. Is this what people mean by falling in love all over again or is this a new height I've yet to experience? In any case her dress was black. It was slender and had a halter top that was held up by two spaghetti straps running from a choker like collar to the top itself. The dress was open back to the small of her back with small strands of fabric laced about it. An inches below her hips on her side, a slim ovoid opening appeared and was about a foot in length before closing off again, exposing the side of her thigh the wider side at the top and the smaller side closing it off about three inches above her knee. The skirt of her dress altogether was in the mermaid style by fitting her form to the knee before slightly flaring out to I’m assuming the floor but her walking kept the dress an inch off the ground. On the edge of the ovoid openings just a couple inches from the the top on either side, three golden chords draped from one edge to the other in a tier layered way. The chords did the same in front and back making it look like some sort of belt. Two golden chords draped across the bodice from the point where the bodice and the strap met to the other in the similar tier fashion. She had stiletto heels on beneath the dress. Her hair which I usually describe as embers were practically glowing as if the embers were being blown upon and one more good gust of air would ignite her entire head or she had a flow of lava starting atop her head to the shoulder blades. She had some of her hair in a half up ponytail with the rest falling naturally about her slim shoulders.

I couldn’t even move as they walked past. I felt Drizzt leaning over calling out to his mother which in turn she stopped and came closer to the edge of the stage where I stood and bent forward to ruffle Drizzt’s hair. She then stood back up and looked at me. She gave me a flirty pose and wink and after blowing me a kiss turned to continue the walk. The crowd ate up this interaction but I was still too stunned to join in the cheering. As they were finishing the walk and heading back, I felt a gentle elbow in my flank and I snapped back to reality in time to hear Purah, who I forgot existed, say with a knowing look. “You're drooling there lovebird.”

I immediately wiped my mouth with my sleeve as I feebly protested, “No I’m not.”

“Are too.” I heard from the top of my head.

“Who’s side are you on?” I asked the little traitor.

“I take it Midna’s your wife?” Purah guessed.

Knowing my reaction to seeing Midna and how she interacted with us gave it away, I relented, “Yeah..” I responded coyly.

“I’ve known Midna for years!” Purah said excitedly “You two make an adorable couple.”

I was about to respond but the MC announced a brief intermission to allow us to vote and give all the entries a breather. A couple seconds after that, my phone started ringing. I looked and it was Midna wanting a facetime. I accepted it and raised the phone to face level. When Midna’s face came up on my screen, she was still wearing everything and I had to take a second but I guess I finally got over my initial shock of how beautiful she was. She spoke first. “Hey, little wolf, have we recovered yet?”

“I don’t know. I think you broke him.” Purah said behind the phone.

“Is that Purah?” Midna said with a smile of familiarity. “I thought I saw her standing next to you.”

I motioned Purah to step into view. camera with me as I asked. “How do you two know each other?”

“She’s my go to source when we need to promote something. And she was a key factor for boosting our notoriety when we were just starting out.” She explained.

Purah came up beside me energetically. “Yo check it! Hey, sister! You looked divine out there!”

“Thanks.” Midna said with a smile. “We’ll totally catch up later but I was just checking on my husband.”

“No problem.” She said giving a thumbs up before ducking back out of frame.

“So, how’s Drizzt?” Midna asked not wasting time

Upon hearing his name, Drizzt leaned over my head seemingly on the verge of falling forward. “Hi mommy! You look pretty!”

With a chuckle Midna replied, “Thank you sweetie.”

“Are we done yet?”

“We’re almost done. We just need to see who wins.”

“But I thought you won.”

“Not quite yet.” Midna said with a wink.

I moved Drizzt so I could see the screen again. “Is Riju there?”

“She’s close by.” Midna said raising her arm supposedly waiving her over because a few seconds later, Riju was on screen.

“Hey, Short Stack. Feeling better?” I asked using the nickname to get her to lose some anxiety.

It worked because a smirk appeared on her face. “Fine dad. Just glad its over.”

“ You did great out there. I’m proud of you.”

“Thanks dad.” She said as a genuine smile dawned her face.

“Places please!” I heard a voice outside the frame say on their end.

“That’s our que, Mokoto.” Midna said.

“Break a leg.” I said ending the call.

I looked at the stage as consequently, the house lights dimmed and the MC stepped onto stage.

“Ladies and gentlemen! Please join me in applause as we welcome all our participants in this fashion show!” He turned to face the wings and all the contestants walked on the cat walk in lines. As they were making their way to the end of the catwalk to make room for everyone, the MC continued. “As they make their way to their places, I want to make a few announcements. First of all. Thank you for coming to this event and being supportive to all these small creators who have or still are facing the brutal front that is the fashion industry.”

He paused to allow the crowd the applause then continued, “On top you being a phenomenal audience in moral support, since this a nonprofit event, we raised enough money between admissions and your free will donations, to donate five hundred dollars to each charity that each of these contestants chose regardless of who wins.” The crowd rightfully went nuts about the news.

“Tonight has been wonderful, but all good things must come to an end. And thus it is time to announce the winner! In third place!” He announced, and the crowd hushed and the contestants joined hands in anticipation. “Rito Tundra!”

I’ve heard of them. They specialize in winter wear and have been picking up a considerable pace despite first appearing in small retail stores about a half-year ago.The two who were clearly husband and wife went to receive their reward and the MC gestured to stand to his left slightly behind him. And they obliged.

“In second place…” He started again. With what seemed a even bigger dramatic pause.I was even share thoughts with Drizzt to hurry up but alas, I knew it was all in showmanship. “Zora’s Beach Front!”

Even more cheering sounded as the two women went to accept their reward. I heard Midna and Urbosa talk about them as some sort of friendly rivalry since they have released clothing at times either eastern style from them or swim wear from Eastern chic. It was refreshing how even though they were competition they got along swimmingly and even did some joint projects together. The took their position on the right of the MC similar to the representatives of Rito Tundra.

And then the MC took a decorative envelope from his inner suit coat pocket. I looked up as Urbosa, Midna, and Riju were coincidentally in front of us and in my arms reach. I saw Riju’s eyes scrunch up unnoticeable at all to most but I saw she was shaking a bit. I made a subtle motion to place my hand gently on one of her feet since she was busy holding hands with Urbosa and Midna. She peaked a bit, saw it was me, and closed her eyes again. She smiled and stopped shaking. I got a few side looks from some people around me but I didn’t care.

“And now for the winner.” The MC Finally spoke. “The one you all voted to walk out of here with five hundred-thousand five hundred dollars for the charity of their choice is…” He paused for what I knew the longest of the three times even lowering the microphone. But eventually he raised his hand to speak again. “Eastern Chic!”

The crowd went ballistic.Riju was stunned. A few gave Urbosa and a congratulatory hug. Midna saw Riju and gave her a gentle nudge to snap her out of her stupor. By that time Drizzt was leaning so hard forward I had to support him so he didn’t fall off. Midna walked closer and took Drizzt from me. After she got him held in one arm she reached her free hand to me. I took it and kissed the top of her hand. She then cupped my cheek in her hand and we shared a meaningful wordless stare for a few seconds before returning her attention to Drizzt and her fellow contestants. My glance remained on Midna for a few seconds until in my peripheral, I saw something somewhat leap at me. My reflexes allowed me to turn and see Riju coming from the stage in time to brace myself and catch her and pull her into a hug as she gave me a koala hug. After a few more seconds she lowered her legs to support herself so I could set her down. After I gave her a smile as I wiped her tears, I was careful not to ruin the mascara and eye shadow with the only cloth available to me, which was my t-shirt, I assisted her back on stage so the three could make their way to the MC.

“Eatern Chic,” The MC started as the crowd died down and the other contenders who didn’t place made their way off stage, "congratulations on winning tonight. First off he’s adorable.” He complimented Drizzt. “Secondly, would you like to tell us about the charity you have chosen?”

The MC offered the microphone to Midna who took it with her free hand simultaneously hefting Drizzt up a bit so she could continue her hold on him. Riju reached over to Midna and took Drizzt so Midna could focus on what she was going to say. And she spoke. “If I may, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you, the audience, for your time and support for all of us here. Essentially you are the reason, we are able to stay in business.” She paused for the crowd to applaud. “Also to the people running the show, Andre,” she said gesturing to the MC who did a humble slight bow in acknowledgement “the lights and sound crew, the assistants, the back stage crew and manager, who worked their tails off.”

The crowd cheered at that and Urbosa took the microphone. “Piggybacking off that,” Urbosa started, “We would like to also thank our fellow small creators and even the giants of the fashion industry. Without you, we would not get as far with our designs we come up. Pushing us to think and revolutionize what defines a fickle subject that is fashion. And even more so to the employees we’ve gained over the years to help us achieve our goals and ambitions because they too believed in it.”

Urbosa handed the microphone back to Midna. “And on a personal level, I wanted to thank my family. Riju and Drizzt, “Thank you for both being in my life and giving it meaning. Life is always an adventure with you two and I wouldn’t have you change anything about yourselves because you two are perfect the way you are and selfishly, I like how you two get along so well that I don’t have to worry about either of you. Riju especially thank you for your willingness to accept me into your family and stepping up to help with your brother, father, and even me and our company.”

Noticing his mother was addressing them, Drizzt stopped looking around and turn his attention to her. Where upon he said, “Mommy, stop crying.” In a worried voice which made her and everyone else burst into laughter and “Aww”s at his comment. I myself stayed silent just taking in the beauty of the moment.

Then Midna made a knowing glance at me. “And finally my last but not at all thanks goes to my husband, Mokoto.” She said keeping eye contact with me. Purah nudged me, giving me an eyebrow flash as encouragement. I myself felt some glances my way again, but warmly this time and I tried to subtle make my profile smaller by slightly ducking my head because I wasn’t used to so much attention from strangers. However I didn’t break eye contact with Midna. “Thank you so much for being my best friend, my anchor when we were at our lowest and nothing seemed to be going right. And the times you just were there to listen to my anxieties and frustrations, “ Urbosa nodded her agreement at this part, “And not being afraid to give me a reality check those anxieties proved to be nothing while not thinking any less of me.” She then broke eye contact to address the audience. “This man will be the first to deny any help he has been but has been a big help to me and our family, also our business…” She stopped herself when she spotted me shaking my head as I thought I didn’t do much and addressed me again. “No! Stop it! See, He’s already shaking his head.”

That got a laugh from the audience and Minda continued, “And I’m proud that he chose me to be his partner for life.” She gave me another meaningful glance and Urbosa started clapping which the audience joined in. Then Midna continued, “I would say sorry for making you endure all that ‘mushy stuff’ but I’m not so I won’t.” Another brief wave of laughter from the audience ensued, “But now to explain the charity, I must first tell you how it came to be. About ten months back or so, my daughter, Riju, was assigned in her art class to design a dress. All by herself, she came up with her project and received an A on it. She then came to me with her sketches and offered them to me to develop and add to our line up we had coming out for that summer collection. Not wanting to just take it from her, we compromised that she would get a good hefty cut from any sales we made. As those following the trends, this dress was majorly successful and I found it fitting she joined us on stage wearing the outfit she designed herself.” The crowd cheered their approval

Urbosa then took the microphone. “After the success, it got Midna and I thinking of the designers of the future. And how all it would take for some designer to not be able to come about is something as common as not being able to afford the education they needed to succeed. That’s when we started developing a fund and system that would allow high school graduates to apply for a scholarship to further their career regardless of where they decide to take their talents to. Whether it be us, our competitors, or they decide to start their own business.Which by the way, has already seen eight students off to college who wouldn’t be able to otherwise. We would have offered Riju the same chance but she has already payed her full tuition in full by herself with the royalties she has already received.

The crowd went even more nuts at this announcement if that was possible. The MC took back the microphone and waited a minute for the audience to get their applause done. Then spoke to quiet them down. “What a touching and inspiring story. And congratulations to Eastern Chic!’ He allowed another few seconds for the crowd to cheer. “And with that, ladies and gentlemen. I hereby announce that this fashion show is over. Please pick up any trash you have, exit the auditorium in a calm fashion and please drive safely home. He then looked to the wings of the stage and nodded.

The other contestants stepped onto the stage in two rows applauding as they made their way. The group already on stage joined them with the MC in the middle and they took their bows before exiting the stage to the wings. It occurred to me that Midna still had Drizzt. I made my way to my truck to pick them up. I only made it a few steps towards the exit when two men in black suits and sunglasses intercepted my path. “Mr. Mokoto Diver?” the one on the right asked expressionless.

“Y-yes?” I confirmed my identity, unsure of what was going on.

“You need to come with us.” The one on the left spoke also emotionlessly.

“Ookayy.” I started to get worried.

They ushered me through the VIP section, forcing their way through and past the crowd trying to exit. We got to a guy acting as bouncer to an entrance and upon seeing us, he opened the rope barrier to allow us passage. I deduced this to be the way to the green rooms backstage since I spotted multiple stage crew members rushing about as they were in the process of striking the set and other things they needed to do to get things ready for the next event.. I heard a major group of people talking as we made several left and right turns. Though I couldn’t decipher any conversation it seemed to have a casual to merriment tone. Finally I was ushered into a huge room that clearly was acting as a lounge for the contestants. The other contestants made way for us as they spotted me and the two guys ushering me until the biggest clump finally dispersed an opening to reveal Midna, Riju, and Urbosoa posing for Purah with Riju Holding the display oversized check. Purah snapped the last picture saying “Click Snap!” and the group converged as they looked at the photo while others watched and one entertained Drizzt with a magic trick. I left the two guys ushering me to go to my family which they didn’t intervene. Midna spotted me and gave me a tight hug. “Hey,” I said, returning the gesture. “Is everything all right? Did something happen?”

Seeming to know why my line of questioning was because how I was brought here, she answered "Well ..." She started then letting go to face me, “you weren’t here so I requested that be amended and these fine gentlemen were nice enough to obliged.”

I turned to them and they were now wearing smiles as they both gave thumbs up before returning to their post.

“Well I’m here.” I said. “I was just about to get the truck warmed up.

“All well and good but you didn’t think I would allow us to leave without a commemorative photo?” Midna said with her signature smirk.

“Okay.” I said and followed the direction of Purah who was taking the shot.

After wrangling Drizzt and roping Urbosa back in who thought to step out we got a couple of shots in. We all huddled around to see the photos and I think they turned out great. As I looked at the photos it made me really appreciate my family. I got an idea. “How about one more?”

Midna gave me a curious side look but we all agreed. We got back in position. Purah gave the count down and between her say, “One, Click Snap!”I turned to Midna who was about to lean over, for which I'm assuming for a surprise quick pec on my cheek but the surprise was on her this time. I took advantage of her slight withdrawal in surprise to reach with my right hand grabbing the small of her back pulling her gently but suddenly towards me. In a slight calculated delay I reached and hooked my left hand under her arm and up to between her shoulder blades to support her as I proceeded to put her into a dip. She gave a surprised shriek but not for long as I kissed her on the lips. It took her a second or two to recover but once she did she wrapped her arms around my neck giving in to the passionate kiss. In the process I heard some onlookers react in shock but approval nonetheless, Urbosa and Riju laughing, and Drizzt saying, “Eeewwww!”

That caused us both to stop as we were laughing. We stayed in that position however and when we finally stopped laughing I looked into her eyes, “I always wanted to do that since I saw you walk on the catwalk.”

She countered, “I didn’t want you to stop.” And kissed me again.

When we were eventually driving home afterwards everyone completely fell asleep. Urbosa carpooled with us and since she was still up, we caught up on events with Riju and Drizzt till we got to her house. She said her goodbyes to those who were still awake, so just me, and told me to give her warm regards to the sleeping beauties still in the car. As I pulled away I looked over in the passenger seat seeing Midna leaning against the window in her street clothes since everyone changed before we left Her shallow breaths briefly fogging up a small area of the window. It was adorable. But I noticed that she had competition as I looked in the rear view mirror. There I saw in the middle seat, Drizzt in his booster seat with his head resting on Riju’s shoulder and Riju was resting her head on his both sleeping soundly. And I thought to myself, “I do have a beautiful family.”

A beautiful Family (The Gang’s all here) (Part 1)

I felt so uneasy being here in the VIP section among the reporters and people in suits who were likely retailers. But my uneasiness is mostly being at my first fashion show. About a month ago, Midna had gotten an invitation to participate in this fashion show that was recruiting smaller fashion brands to take this opportunity to show off their either best or latest designs all while charity fund raising. They made it into a competition of popular vote and the winner would receive a hefty check for the charity of their choosing. Midna, inspired by Riju who made a design they wound up buying from her, and with Urbosa, her cofounder, made a plan to make a fund raiser of their own to help aspiring artists and designers get the education they need to start their career. It was a three week headache but they came to an agreement with the officials to choose their new scholarship program.

The turn out was very impressive, considering that this wasn’t a mainstream event in the fashion industry. “Dad, where’s mom?” An impatient five year old interrupted me from my thoughts.

“She’s with your sister and Aunt Urbosa getting ready.” I responded to him. Midna invited Riju to be with her and Urbosa on the cat walk to show the design she made.

“What does their dresses look like?” He asked.

“I don’t know. They kept it secret even to me.”

“How much longer till it starts?”

“Ten minutes.”

He let out a dramatic sigh then rested his head atop mine.

“Cute kid. How old is he?” An unfamiliar woman’s voice came from behind me.

I turned to see a woman with white hair in a hairdo that I can only compare to a beehive but not as outdated as the such a hairdo. Somehow it just worked. She wore bright red rimmed glasses. She had a unzipped jacket on with a beige t-shirt underneath with a press lanyard dangling from her neck. She wore scarlet yoga pants and sneakers. She had a pencil in her ear, a duffel bag at her side and a camera dangling from the front. I was weary of her but not to be rude answered. “He’s five.”

“Five and a half.” I heard from atop my head.

“Five and a half.” I ammended.

“What’s your name?” The reporter asked Drizzt but hid his face behind my head. “Oh! I didn’t mean to scare him.” She explained to me.

“Give him a few minutes.” I said reassuringly. “He’ll come around.”

“Gotcha.” She said understandably. “Oh where are my manners? I’m Purah from the Lucky Clover Magazine.” She said extending her hand to me.

“Mokoto Diver.” I responded as I took her hand and shook it.

“Who are you with if you don’t mind me asking?” Purah asked quirkily.

“My son.” I responded gesturing my head towards Drizzt.

“Oh, your not a reporter or anything?” Purah asked.

“No. My wife and daughter are in the show and we were given VIP passes to watch.

“That’s awesome!” Purah said. “I don’t see alot of family members in these circles unless they’re in the fashion industry themselves. So I think it’s great that you’re here to support your family.” She said encouragingly. “Who’s your wife?” She asked as she flipped open the program looking at the list of contestants.

Apparently I made a hesitant face, as I only said, “Uh…”

“Oh I’m sorry!” Purah immediately apologized. “I was only making conversation. You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to. I get it. A reporter like me could be trying to get some information that best be private.”

I was taken aback by her comment. “Thanks.” I said genuinely. “I’ll leave it to her if she wants to disclose that but I’m going to keep her private life to myself.”

“Understandable.” She nodded her approval. She then looked to the cat walk and said, “Hey from here we can see the wings.”

I turned to look ams sure enough we did. And to boot I saw Riju nervously glancing at the crowd searching for something. Then her eyes locked on me. I hand motioned to take deep breaths and she nodded. Drizzt must have spotted her too because he started waving frantically to the point he lost his balance and quickly had to grasp my head to regain it. In his desperation both his hands covered my eyes blocking my vision. “Drizzt, I can’t see anything.”

He quickly adjusted his grip and I could see again but Riju was no longer there. Suddenly all the house lights dimmed and the crowd hushed in anticipation. Then the MC came and hyped up the crowd explaining how the night was going to go and the voting afterwards.

After that was done he commenced the fashion show where he introduced the entry to the stage. As they were walking the catwalk, the MC would describe their brand and a little behind the scenes trivia about them. Alot of it was reflecting questions I recognized Midna answering on the entry form. Every entry received good support from the crowd. The amount was different for everyone but the good thing was no one walked to just silence save the MC and the Music.

The current entry left the cat walk and the MC started to hype up the next one as he did the others. As he did, I recognized that it was Midna, Riju, And Urbosa next. Drizzt caught on too and I assumed that they walked onto stage because my vision went dark again as Drizzt waved frantically with one hand while gripping my head with the other like a sweat band that slipped over the eyes.

“Is that Midna!” I heard Purah exclaim.

“Drizzt I can’t see.” I protested.

Take Your Kid To Work Day (Midna and Drizzt)

Midna was sitting at her desk in her office. Her fingers tapping away on the keyboard with precision and swiftness as she composed an email. After proofreading her work, she hit send. She rolled her chair back a bit and stretched her limbs not realizing how much time had passed. She took a quick peak at her calendar on her phone. Her brief relaxation was interrupted when she saw that instead of a relaxed rest of the day, her son Drizzt had a half day of school. She quickly called her husband, Mokoto, who picked up almost immediately and on his end she could hear the roar of the engine she knew to be the semi he drove.

“Twilight Logistics.” He said as his greeting when he was on the clock.”

“Hey, Little Wolf” Midna said.

“What’s wrong?” Mokoto replied immediately sensing the distress in her voice.

“By any chance are you wrapping up work within the next half hour?”

“What do you need?” He asked with a ‘down to buisness’ tone.

“Answer the question.” Midna reinforced knowing the angle Mokoto was going for.

“Honey, if…”

“It’s not an emergency.” Midna interrupted him while reassuring that things were not as dire as he was expecting.

“Then what is it?” He asked with a bit more relaxed tone.

Knowing he still had some concerns, she gave a little. “I completely forgot Drizzt has a half day at school which is ending within the hour and I’m still at work. I’m asking you if you’re day’s ending so maybe you can pick him up but I can figure something out if not.”

“Unfortunately I’m an hour and a half away from the city.” Mokoto replied. “I can…”

“No.” Midna stopped him there knowing he’d go to more than necessary trouble to help her out which she loved and sometimes found troublesome about him. “I can step out of the office early, I’ll just have to make it up to Urbosa later.”

After a short laugh, he replied, “Like she’d let you.” After he stifled his laugh he continued, “If you’re sure about it, I’ll leave it to you. But I am on my way back to dispatch now if you want to bring him to work and then I can pick him up from there.”

“That is a possibility.” Midna agreed “I’ll keep that in mind. Love you.”

“Not as much as I love you.” Mokoto replied before hanging up as to not let her get a comeback in.

Midna sighed as she shot him a quick text with the message containing only an emoji of a huffy face with its tongue sticking out clearly blowing a raspberry. She was about to get up from her chair thinking about how to leave when a tall, sun kissed skinned, scarlet haired woman walked into the threshold of Midna’s office. The woman raised an eyebrow and asked, “Going somewhere?”

“Hey, Urbosa.” Midna greeted her buisness partner, “Just the person I was about to see.”

“I can hold down the fort.” She said with a knowing wink and a mischievous smile.

“But…”

“But nothing.” Urbosa replied interrupting her, “You’re a mother first and foremost. And besides you don’t need permission from me to take half a day off to take care of your family since you’re also a cofounder of this company.”

“I know.” Midna said rising and collecting the few things she couldn’t leave behind like her keys, wallet, and jacket. “But I’m coming back here to finish up.”

“Even better. Drizzt does liven up the place.” Urbosa said as she cleared the threshold to let her pass.

With that, Midna rushed out of the office and made it to the school with ten minutes or so to spare. She parked and walked into the building. She walked the hallways knowing her path. The only sounds were the clicking of her heels as she strode with purpose and the muffled voices of both students and teachers as other classes were still in session. Then eventually the hushed murmuring of Drizzt’s classmates’ parents as she neared the her son’s classroom.

She finally arrived and there was a couple of presumably other parents, one a guy the other a girl, waiting near the door. She stood against the wall alongside them checking her watch to see there were only a couple more minutes left.

“As far as I can tell,” The man offered in a hushed voice, “They’re just about done.”

“Thank you.” Midna said in reply lowering her hand as that did satisfy her inquiry.

“Who’s your child?” The woman asked, “I don’t believe I’ve met you before.”

Midna observed her for a moment, seeing if she knew her, but sure enough, she had no idea who these two were. “I’m Drizzt’s mother.” Midna finally answered. “I..”

She was about to introduce herself formally but both of the two’s eyes lit up as soon as Drizzt’s name was mentioned. “You’re Midna!” They said in unison a bit louder than they intended but not enough to disrupt any classrooms nearby.

“I see my reputation proceeds me.” Midna observed surprised they knew who she was.

“Yeah.” The man replied with a chuckle, “Gramps and Drizzt talk about you and Riju all the time!”

“Hudson!” The woman said reprimandingly while elbowing him.

However Midna smirked as she asked, “Gramps?”

Who she assumed to be Hudson scratched the back of his head in embarrassment for his blunder. “Oh, sorry. That’s just the nickname he got from the younger warehouse workers and it kinda stuck.”

“Now I’m curious about how Mokoto got that.” She said intrigued.

“Anyone who’s been with them for five years or more to the warehouse is apparently old to the dock workers. On top of that, he’s one of the only drivers who actually come into the warehouse to oversee how his truck is being loaded and very quick to callout anything out of place. It seemed to the younger dock workers like he was an old man set in tradition. So they started calling him Gramps behind his back until one dock worker called him that to his face because he didn’t know his real name.

Midna was laughing seeing the series of events play out perfectly in her head. “And what was his reaction?”

The woman chimed in, “Apparently, he had the poor kid, who thought he was a dead man, repeat himself. Afterwards Mokoto just laughed it off. Mokoto told us after some asking around, he found out why and actually takes some pride in the new nickname.”

The three had a good but hushed laugh as to not disturb the classes or the other parents who were starting to arrive.

Then it dawned on Midna she didn’t get the woman’s name although she got the impression she and Hudson were married. “By the way…” she started but was interrupted by the teacher’s volume increasing followed promptly by the classroom door opening.

The teacher’s voice was at first inaudible but as the door opened they heard, “…because I think I hear some of your parents outside.”

With that a young woman with white hair half put up in a bun with the rest falling naturally behind her, peaked and saw the parents waiting. She instructed the children to wait by their desk and dismissed them as their parents came one by one to collect them.

“And who are you here…” The teacher was about to ask but she stopped herself as the light of familiarity was in her rustic brown eyes, “I hope I’m not falsely presuming, but you must be Drizzt’s mother.” She said cheerfully.

“Indeed I am.” Midna smiled as she confirmed the teacher’s suspicions.

“As soon as I saw you, I saw the relation.”

“Yeah, he does get his red eyes, ember orange hair, and as my husband claims, abundant energy from me.” Midna said with a chuckle. “I hope he wasn’t too much trouble, Miss Paya.”

Midna knew the teacher’s name since Drizzt loved preschool and his teacher.”

“Oh please, you’re not my student, call me Paya.” She said cheerfully. “And not at all. He…”

Paya’s sentence was drowned out by a familiar voice shouted in excitement, “Mommy!” Followed by the sound of loud footsteps as an orange blur somehow snuck past Paya and rammed into his mother’s leg hugging her which made Midna have to slightly catch her balance.”

“Drizzt, weren’t you told to wait by your seat?” Midna asked softly but with a hint of stern.

“Sorry, mom. Sorry Miss Pays.” Drizzt said with some remorse.

“That’s alright, just make sure to…”

“…be like a snail when you feel your patience is about to fail.” Drizzt finished.

“Have a great rest of the day you two.

They moved out of the way so Hudson and the other woman could collect their kid. Midna turned to the woman then and asked, “I never caught your name.”

The woman smiled, held out her hand and said, “Oh I’m sorry, my name is Rhondson. Mattison’s mom. Hudson is my husband.”

“Well it was nice meeting you both but I have to book it back. We should totally get together sometime.”

“That would be great.”

With that, Midna ushered drizzt to the exit. As they got settled into Midna’s car and drove off, Midna started with, “So we’re not going home yet.”

“Where are we going then?” Drizzt asked curiously from his car seat on the passenger rear seat.

“I still have work to do so we’re going to my office.”

“Your office?” Drizzt asked.

“It’s been a while but you have been there before. Though you were little so you might not remember. Do you remember Aunt Urbosa?”

“Yeah!!” Drizzt exclaimed as Urbosa was not only Midna’s business partner, she was also a close friend to both Midna and Mokoto and visited them often making her practically family.

“Well she works there too so you’re going to see her.”

“What about dad and Riju?” Drizzt asked.

“Riju still had school and student council after that. Dad is coming to pick you up from my office when he gets off work.”

“Okay.” Drizzt responded.”

They made it back to Midna’s workplace returned to her desk after periodically stopping to introduce Drizzt to some of her subordinates as they only have seen pictures of him that were on her desk. Midna and Drizzt eventually made it to her desk. She found a spare notebook and a few pencils and gave them to Drizzt to doodle. Drizzt gladly obliged since it was one of his favorite pastimes when not much else grabbed his attention and he did find the office a bit boring.

Midna continued her work she left behind only interrupted by Drizzt who would occasionally update her on his progress and her checking up on him and occasional conversation seeing to make sure he didn’t feel completely ignored.

A knock on the door interrupted the two and the looked up to see the door open and Urbosa peek her head in and then enter the room completely “Hey, you two. I thought you’d be home by now.”

“I said I would return. I can’t let this stuff wait till tomorrow.” Explained.

“Aunt Urbosa!” Drizzt exclaimed as soon as he realized who she was.

“You need to stop growing.” Urbosa said with a smile as she braced herself for Drizzt’s tackle hugs. Drizzt ran and collided with her but she didn’t even need to counterbalance herself.

“Drizzt what have I told you about that?”Midna scolded.

“Sorry, mom.” Drizzt replied, disheartened.

“No harm no foul.” Urbosa said rising from her half squat to return Drizzt’s hug. “But it’s true that you can’t do that to everyone.” She added with a smile so Drizzt would know she wasn’t upset with him.

Drizzt seemed to perk up a bit and then he asked, “When is dad coming?”

Urbosa turned to Midna. “I was about to ask the same question so that I can give him clearance into the building.”

“Good question.” Midna realized she wasn’t keeping track of how long it’s been. “Let me…”

Midna was interrupted when another man rushed into the office and stopped to catch his breath and announced, “Call the police! There’s someone trying to get in our suite. He claims he’s here to see you!”

Midna stood from her desk and peaked at the clock on the wall and sure enough, the time Mokoto estimated to arrive has come and gone. To confirm her suspicion, she saw the text announcing he arrived at the office building. “Is he about this tall, has brown medium half curly hair and a beard?” Midna asked while raising her hand to the height of her husband.”

“…Yeah.” The office worker said a bit confused how she knew what the trespasser looked like. “He’s a bit muscular too. Gave Cece a fright when he just opened the door. I don’t know how he got a fob to our suite. He and the security guard are arguing right now. And..”

The office worker was interrupted when both Midna and Urbosa were laughing. Midna calmed down a bit go explain, “No need to call police. I’ll be right there.”

“But it’s not…” The office worker was about to protest till Midna interrupted him again.

“I know exactly who it is. Trust me. I can handle our ‘trespasser’” She then turned to Drizzt. “Come on Drizzt. Let’s make sure your father isn’t cartes off to prison.”

She hurriedly collected Drizzt’s things and gently grabbed his hand to lead him out to where Mokoto was being held up while Urbosa told the office worker to go back to work then followed the two.

As they got to the reception desk of the office, they heard Dorian, Cece, and Mokoto arguing with raised voices.

“Why would someone like Midna want to see you?” Cece’s voice was the first coherent sentence they heard.”

“Cece, please let me handle this.” Dorian’s voice clearly sounded annoyed at her. “I will get to the bottom of how you got a FOB into this facility, sir, but you have to leave now.” He then clearly addressed Mokoto.

“I gave you my ID.” Mokoto said in a more calm but irritated tone. “How else am I supposed to prove that I’m…”

Midna and Drizzt finally made it into the room as they had to weave through curious onlookers. “What’s going on.” Midna asked casually making herself visible.

“Sorry to disturb you, but this gentleman here claims…” Dorian started to explain when he was stopped as Drizzt bolted to his father once he saw him.

“Daddy!” he yelled in delight as he dodged past Dorian’s arm as he tried to stop him.

Mokoto smiled and picked him up and carried him so Drizzt’s head was level with his.

“Hey, how was school?” Mokoto asked completely ignoring Cece and Dorian who were starting to see the truth.

“I drew a picture in mommy’s office.” He announced shoving the paper in his father’s face.

Mokoto withdrew his head and took the page from Drizzt in his free hand in order to examine it more closely. As he did, Dorian turned to Midna, “I assume I can continue my other duties?”

Midna smiled and nodded but also went over to Mokoto. “Yes, but first let’s clear the air. This…” She said placing a hand on Mokoto’s shoulder, “Is Mokoto. My husband. He’s here to pick up our son Drizzt.”

“Apologies.” Dorian said realizing Mokot’s claims were true.

“Eh, you were doing your job.” Mokoto said dismissing the need for apologies.”

“Seriously?” Cece asked with a condescending tone. “You are…”

“Cece, you can return to work.” Urbosa replied with a warning tone giving her a stern look.

Cece got the message and returned to the reception desk without another peep. Dorian went back to the security office. “Sorry about that.” Midna addressed her husband.

“And here I thought my day was gonna be dull.” Mokoto replied.

“You lost your rights to a dull day when you said ‘I do’.” Midna replied back in a snarky tone before giving him a quick pec on the lips. “Drive safe.” she said handing him Drizzt’s stuff.

“Will do.” he said about to turn to leave.

“You better, Gramps.” Midna said with a sly smile.”

Mokoto turned to give her a resigned look, “So you met Hudson?”

“Just go, I’ll see you in two hours.” Midna smiled as she shooed them away.

Urbosa and Midna returned to the office. As soon as Drizzt and Mokoto left.

“You what we should do?” Urbosa asked clearly coming up with an idea.

“Give Mokoto as t-shirt that says ‘My queen works here’?” Midna guessed.

“That too.” Urbosa agreed with a laugh. “But also have a company outing where everyone brings their families.”

“Hmm.” Midna replied as she seriously considered the idea. “Might take some effort but definitely worth a try. I’ll see what we can do.”
