Electrolysis — Help! Current but no bubbles forming on coin.

Hey all! Just purchased a Stinger Box electrolysis kit and have been attempting to use it for electrolysis on coins. I’ve followed all the directions and have successfully run a current through the tank when the clip is out of the water but the coin is submerged. Bubbles are forming on the catalyst rod. However, no bubbles are forming on the coin and I’m really stumped why. The brine is mixed properly and the current is flowing (even when the clip is not touching the water {is in picture} but the artifact is). I’ve switched the alligator clips between the coin and catalyst connection points, but no evidence of bubbles on the coin can be seen.

Maybe I should first ask the stupid question: do bubbles always form during electrolysis on the coin?

Another thing worth mentioning. The voltage control knob interestingly is installed on the wrong side of the box. It supposedly works as the voltage displayed changes when it is turned. Maybe the product is just defective, with its clearly incorrect manufacture?

Any help appreciated.

Also, yes, I am running a copper coin on 22V. Just trying to figure out if the kit is underpowered or not.

Lead and Iron Bullion Now in the Stack

Just thought I’d show y’all my bullion stack (not counting my junk and numismatic silver, which I consider separate), along with a touch of humor. Just picked up (literally!) a fractional 1/4 oz iron bar and three lead 1/4 oz fractionals.

Pictured above the “bars“ are my one Silver Eagle and four .925 Mexican silver rounds from 1979-1980. Gotta love the extra-big oldie Mexican silver rounds.

Melted in a 1925 fire — ID possible?

Hey all!

I found this coin metal detecting the foundation of a nineteenth-century importer of asian wares’ house which burned down and was hoping one of you could ID it for me. That may be a long shot, being that the coin was partly melted in the fire and has a hundred years’ worth of corrosion, but the last one I posted, found in the same foundation, you identified as a 1125 Xuanhe Tongbao, so I thought y’all may be able to figure this one out — I’m quite a novice when it comes to Chinese coins, but so far you’ve taught me a respectable amount, so I’m back with a new coin, and it may be a challenge. Hopefully not, though.

Diameter: roughly 37 millimeters

Weight: approximately 9 grams, give or take 2 due to my scale being imprecise.

Composition: bronze, brass, or copper

Mintmark: no reverse markings visible

Also possible this coin could be Japanese. The importer who owned the house back in the day specialized in Japanese wares.

Hopefully one of you will take the time to solve this for me. Many thanks! 🙂

Worked Obsidian in CA — Any ideas to age or function?

Hey all! New to this subreddit and recently found this obsidian piece while hiking in Mill Valley, California (it was exposed on the trail bed by fresh rains). I have been referring to this piece as an arrowhead, but wanted to check in with the experts.

My questions for you all are 1) is this an arrowhead, or some form of hand tool, and 2) do you have any age estimate for this piece based on its typology?

Many thanks — I’m putting together a talk at my local library on artifacts I have found around town and just wanted some expert opinions on this piece, as I’m rather ignorant on native worked stone and obsidian pieces.

Help! No (supposed) Room for Mods

In the last week I keep getting this notification when I try to download mods and am not able to launch or play them. I first saw this after attempting to download Scrotie_Toties "IRON-FRONT" game mod on Enlisted Sandbox. Does anyone know what the problem is, or how to fix this?

For the record:

  1. My PC has over 200 GB of free space, so memory is not lacking.

  2. I have no mods downloaded on Enlisted (I deleted them all), except for a non-working sound mod that is unrelated.

  3. This happens whenever I try to load a mod room or launch one

  4. My game is otherwise still working and I have run a file check.

Help is greatly appreciated. Has anyone had this problem before?

France’s role in WWII was complicated.

(The French Resistance wasn’t part of the Vichy agenda, but Frenchmen under the flag of Vichy France fired on Allied troops during the Operation Torch landings, killing roughly 1000 Allied troops.)

I’m not hating on France, but I do feel we don’t talk enough about collaborators and the Vichy regime, kinda sweeping it under the bed. I know it’s not as romantic of a narrative as is the idea of every Frenchman resisting the Axis powers, but history is complicated.

Also, please note: When I say “French Resistance fans,” I mean fans of the Resistance, not French ones in particular.

New Rider Class Vehicle When??

Bicycle mounting a Villar-Perosa LMG/SMG, essentially two stockless Berreta M1918s with stick mags upside down and duct-taped together (not exactly, but you get what I mean). Gets additional coolness factor for its mudguards. A perfect fit for the rider class or special saboteurs? Personally, I may want to own this in real life as well.

Apocalypse Scenario: How Would You Make Change for Your Silver?

Silverbugs of Reddit, let’s say you are placed in a hypothetical situation where modern conventional currency ceases to work, or even exist. Barter and precious metals become the lifeblood of a struggling economy reminiscent of those, say, of the fifth-century. Essentially, the economic apocalypse is here.

Seeing the majority of us invest in or collect 1-Oz bars or rounds of silver, how are you planning to make change for your pieces? Surely you wouldn’t trade one Silver Eagle for an apple? Are you cutting up your pieces, melting them down into smaller ingots, using copper pennies or copper scrap with an exchange rate, avoiding small purchases altogether, or using another method? I imagine copper bullion and fractional silver coins will be coming in clutch.

I personally collect silver for fun, though I realize some purchase it for financial security if anything rather apocalyptic were to happen to our society/economy. If that’s you, I am very curious to hear your thoughts, though all Silverbugs are welcome to take part in this discussion! :D

Please note that the photograph is not of my silver; I am currently travelling and used an internet stock photo, so flame me not for cutting a Spanish 8 Reales, which by the way looks to be a reproduction in silver.

Just thought I’d show off these two melted silver bits that I found in a foundation of a house that burned down in 1925. I think they are coin silver (90%) in purity. The left one weighs maybe 7 grams, and the right one is a beefer, weighing in at maybe 12 grams.
