Why is genuinely all college social advice like this?? Like what do I actually do??

Vent/Advice

Everywhere on social media, I just keep seeing “Here’s the one thing every freshman should know if you want friends in college!” and it’s literally just “Go outside and talk to people!!!”

Like, how?! What am I supposed to do?? You didnt explain anything whatsoever??

I’m a freshman and i genuinely just don’t know what to do and im scared. I go to a huge university “party school” and yet ive met no one, ive seen my roommate literally once and he moved in early cause of a camp thing so he already has tons of friends, and every time i see people outside, they already have friend groups. It’s not like i can just walk up to a random friend group and be like “h-hey guys! How’s it going?!” since it would most likely just end up with me sitting there not knowing what else to say and it seeming like im just there.

And now it just seems sad. My school has like 30k-40k people and is a huge “party school” and I still can’t manage to talk to people. It’s just demotivating and i know all of this is my fault for not being able to start a conversation or have the courage to talk to people

I really do hope it gets better when classes start in a few days. I just can’t keep on like this the whole year. I’ve tried and now I’m just lost

Pretty proud of my progress!

1st image was drawn June 22nd (Start of my art journey)

2nd image was drawn Aug. 4th.

3rd image was drawn yesterday.

Pretty obvious I’m using a reference, but I’m still proud of it nonetheless (especially since I used a reference for the first one too, and that obviously didn’t turn out the greatest). Drew about every day, except about a 2 week break at one point a few weeks ago and a week break last week.

Can people smell when you sweat from the heat? If so, how can you prevent it?

How much can other people smell when you sweat from the heat?

I’m going off to college, and I’m gonna have to walk to classes. It’s a big campus, and I live in the southeast of the US, it’s so freakin hot rn.

But for the average person, how bad do people usually smell after sweating and from the heat? The 2 spots I sweat the most are my forehead and back (and obviously armpits, but that’s why you reapply deodorant). My forehead will probably be fine since I have a handheld fan and can also wear a hat.

My biggest concern is my back since usually after going inside when it’s hot out, I feel my back under my shirt and it’s pretty wet.

So how much do people usually smell you after sweating in the heat? (And like a normal human being, I shower regularly in the morning and at night, use deodorant every morning, at night, and mid-day, and cologne)

Are apartments and the city really that bad? I’m genuinely worried.

I’m about to be a freshman at University of Alabama, and from everything I’ve read about off-campus apartments in the area after moving out for your sophomore-senior years, I’m genuinely just getting scared. I guess I should have done more research on the city itself more?

But how bad really is it? Every post I read on this subreddit and the Capstone one all have so many negative things about every single apartment, and that’s not even including the prices. I’ve heard about crime, shootings, roach infestations, etc. And I’m just getting scared for what may happen after I move out of the dorm.

It’s not even just the apartments but also the area/city itself that’s scaring me (I’m from another part of AL). So many things I’ve read about it being dangerous. So can someone please tell me if everything I’m reading is really as bad as I said?

Edit: I was bored, sleep deprived, and worried, so I researched a bunch of apartments even though I have a couple months. So if you have any input or experience please let me know. I love knowing about this stuff way in advance.

The ones I'm pretty sure are bad: Redpoint (dangerous), Cottages, Lark, Riverfront, Vie.

The ones that are middle-ground, but not sure: Ion, Bluff, Crimson, Tenth and Tusk, and maybe East Edge?

Heard some positive things, but most are further away: Essex Square, Royal Hills, Rivermont, Hillside Commons (?), Stone Creek, Northbrook, and Fountain Square (This one is seeming better since it’s close to campus, so tell me if you have experience with this one)

Of course, this is all just from stuff I've read. I have no actual idea if any of this is true, but if youve been in any of these, I'd love to hear em

How do I hide the manga I’m reading in public?

Are there any kind of “book covers” that are small/big enough for mangas? Going to college soon and have a lot of time in between classes, and would like to read manga in the times when I’m not studying in public.

But there is no way I could possibly read romance manga/light novels in public, especially the ones with weird ass covers.

So does anyone have any recommendations of “book covers” or something like that that’ll fit for manga

(And I’ve seen another post on this and all the replies were just saying to own up to it. But there is NO WAY I’m reading “There’s No Freaking Way I’ll Be Your Lover… Unless…” in public. Like have you seen the covers 😭)

Is it bad to “copy art” to learn?

I’m a complete beginner trying to learn to draw, and right now I’m mostly just finding an image of a character I like and drawing that image. Is that a bad way to learn? I don’t really know what else I’m supposed to do as whenever I try to actually draw something without looking at it, I can’t. So I don’t know if I’m actually improving or just mindlessly “copying” something else. (Here are a few exaxmples)

So is what I’m doing bad? And what else should I do to improve?

Is the preview audio quality worse compared to when you have a membership?

I want to listen a certain book, but the audio quality is noticeably different in certain places.

On the Amazon mobile app, the audio quality is perfect.

When I download the Audible mobile App, the audio quality really bad/sounds robotic?

On Spotify, it sounds perfect (same narrator/same playback).

And on Desktop Audible site, the preview sounds the same as the mobile app (bad).

So is it different when you actually have a membership or something? Why does it sound different between them?

Edit: Went ahead and got a membership, and the sound quality got fixed. Still weird though, especially since I tried the preview on other books on the app and they sounded normal? But it’s fixed now so I can’t complain 👍
