A bumblebee on an artichoke flower.

The bee has been a regular all week, first time I was able to get a shot.

Can someone explain this hobby for me?

Thank you everyone! I learned a TON that I didn't know before. However, I'm going to have to turn off reply notifications. I'm being spammed with replies! lol! At least it's friendly, informative spam! Again, thank you all!

Electronics in a hobby of mine, but not RF wizardry. That is based on the old, dark magics of time immemorial. I've never really understood ham radio. To be fair, to each their own, but I am curious what drew you to the hobby and what is this hobby all about? I figure it has to be more than "I talked to so and so from such and such today!" The equipment costs do not justify random conversations with strangers. Am I correct that this can be used during times of national emergency and defense?

Can an active starter be refrigerated and used in the morning?

I have stage 4 cancer. It causes massive fatigue. I didn't set an alarm last night because all I had to do today was bake some bread. I woke up at 1 PM. I fed my starter last night and left it out, knowing it would have peaked by 9 AM. I keep my house at 72°F (22°C). However, because I slept so long, it had gone past maturity. It's hard for me to align my schedule to a bread's schedule.

Can I feed the starter now, refrigerate it when it reaches peak and then use it tomorrow and just use warmer water than I normally would? I know that I most definitely *COULD*, but I do not know how this will affect proofing times.

How does the flour in a starter affect the flour in the dough?

I made a mistake yesterday on a 65% hydration loaf. I forgot to factor in the water in the starter, 1:1:1, and turned the formula from 65% to 82%. I knew better; just a brain fart. What I do not understand is how the flour in the starter affects the formula. The yeast and acid in the starter, in my mind, should break down the flour to the point that it really is not usable as such. From my experience with starters, that is exactly the case, i.e., a structureless goo. I'm tempted to ignore it and treat it as an unintended and unwanted inclusion; basically a waste product I cannot exclude. Does it do anything positive to the structure of the dough? Does it contribute to the gluten being developed?

[EDIT]

Updated formula:

Flour 100%
Water 48%
+ Half Levain Weight 17%
Total Water Weight 65%
Levain 33%
Oil 7%
Honey 7%
Salt 2%
Total 214%

Original formula:

Flour 100%
Water 65%
Levain 33%
Oil 7%
Honey 7%
Salt 2%
Total 214%

Looking for a slow cooker pork recipe.

I bought some thick porkchops last week. I don't want to cook them the typical way(s). I want to make something with them that is NOT pulled pork and not typical porkchops. I'm open to soups, stews, ANYTHING with rice... I rarely cook pork. For me, pork is either bacon, ham, pulled pork BBQ or dry, tough pan fried or oven baked porkchops. I can think of dozens of ways to cook chicken and beef, but pork? Not so much.

I'd like any recipe idea you guys can think of, but no cheese or alcohol, please!

[EDIT] I forgot to add, due to medical issues I cannot eat anything that tends to produce gas or is highly inflammatory, like chilis. I will be in excruciating pain for at least 24 hours and it can take up to a week for my digestive tract to recover. Many of the foods I love are foods I can no longer eat.

Orientation of electrolytics?

I've been seeing a TON of PCB review requests and in nearly every one, they have the positive side of the cap to ground. I have always thought, positive to positive, negative to ground or negative as the case may be. Am I wrong?

2010 Nissan Murano belt squeal. I've been dealing with this since October. I'm about to take it out to a field and set it on fire!

In September of last year I replace the timing chain. Everything went well. It was the biggest engine repair I've ever done, but it's in time and there have been no obvious issues. Except a few weeks after, the belt started squealing. I have replaced every. single. component. that belt touches, save for the harmonic balancer. It was shredding belts, but that turned out to be the lower idler pulley's shaft having been pulled back far enough to deform the aluminum bracket it sits in and damage the threads. I replaced the bracket and helicoiled the threads and that problem stopped. The noise, however, continues. I know it is not internal to the engine as removing the belt and starting the engine stops the noise. It's not a bearing as wetting the belt also stops the noise. I have replaced the tensioner, both idler pulleys, the A/C clutch (had a slightly crunchy bearing), alternator (was bad) and had a mechanic look at it for him to tell me it was the power steering pump, which he replaced (it wasn't). I do not know what else to do. Something tells me it's not directly related to the belt or pulleys, like liquid dripping on the belt, but I cannot find anything to support that. I did have an oil leak coming from the lower oil pan gasket, but that has been fixed. Still nothing.

I uploaded a recording of the sound (headphone warning!). I'm also not to happy about the sound of the engine while it's being revved, but that is a matter for another time. I'd appreciate any suggestions, no matter how far "out there" they may be. What's really weird is that for every time I've replaced something, the noise stops for a week or so and then it comes back in force. Please help my sanity!

I didn't know this was a thing!

I'm curious if anyone has used a multi-head printer to print plastic supports in and around the ceramic? I live in Oklahoma, with legalized medicinal marijuana use. While I despise the stuff and do not smoke, there is a market. I was considering making plastic molds to make ceramic pipes, but this subreddit opens doors I had not considered. It would be nice to be able to print PLA supports internal to the pipe to hold open the pipe while the ceramic is drying. It would then be burned off in the firing. Has anyone ever tried this or have example of this being done?

Note: This is NOT a drug use post! That is not my intent and I would appreciate it if it stayed that way. I'm using my pipe idea as an example and ONLY an example. I am only interested in the 3D printing technology.

I need a good (cheap) USB to RS232 connector.

I need to interface with a Stepper Online integrated servo. I can cram a PCI to serial card in my laptop, but I really want my laptop to work afterwards. Amazon, of course, has a huge selection of cables, but I have no experience with this servo and I know that RS232 implementations can vary wildly, although I doubt any USB to serial adaptor will be following the original spec with +-12v. Anyway, any suggestions?

Is the Kraken compatible with servos and closed-loop steppers?

I've looked at images of the board and read through the manual, but I can find no reference to anything other than "motors". Is there a way to connect encoders or does that have to come through an external board?
