Private Pool Parties
Hi. I have been a lifeguard for about 4 years, swim team since 6th grade, teach lessons, have Lifeguard and WSI certifications, have worked at the YMCA, a beach, yacht club, town pool, etc. I would really love to talk more about liability with lessons and lifeguarding at someone's house. A lot of people talk about sueing and here's my confusion. I am an 18 year old college student who has no assets and these private excursions would not be on my property but someone else's. I know a lot of people get "babysitters" the same way they look for private swim instructors and lifeguards. So I don't understand how I could be liable for an accident at someone else's house, while they are there and also responsible, when I don't own anything worth sueing for, and there's 14 year olds baby sitting with none of the first aid/AED/CPR experience I have. I am wondering how to protect myself or if that's even worth it. My employer has no issue with me borrowing a tube and my bosses often send out information for when people request private guards or lesson instruction. Do I need a lawyer or a notarized paper for them to sign each time? I've tried to ask Reddit for help with pricing lessons and guarding and often times people say to just not the job at all. I would think people who hire teenagers are doing it to help kids out with a summer job, not to go after their parent's house and leave them broke. I live in the state of Massachusetts if that means anything.
