Background check

Hi guys, I understand that background check varies by role and have experienced in the past too.

I was at a bank previously, and when I was hired there as Director, I only went through criminal and credit check. No education or past employment check. However, at other banks, I went through all checks including employment.

I am expecting an offer from ScotiaBank in Wealth AI team. Can someone share what kind of checks will I go through? More importantly, does anyone know if there are any additional internal checks that happen beyond regular Sterling checks?

Thanks in advance.

Has anyone recently joined TD and went through background check?

Can you please advise? It’s very urgent as I’m expecting an offer and want to know how does the background check form looks like.

[CAN-ON] implications of background check failed

Hi HR folks, I received an offer from a bank and my background check failed. No one is sharing the details - bank asks me to talk to Sterling and Sterling wants me to talk to bank.

Nonetheless, I wanted to ask what are the implications of the failed background check other than this particular opportunity is gone.

Does it mean I’m now banned from applying to this bank for any other roles forever?

[CAN-ON] Offer rescinded due to background check issue

Can someone please guide me if anything can be done here? I received an offer from a bank and background check started. The form itself was so confusing that I had to call them multiple times and they just acknowledged yes, it is not the best, but then said it is how your potential employer customized it with us. (E.g., it says we need your past 3 employers, you can click to add employers, but there is no option to add more than 2 employers and sterling confirmed that they want only 2, not 3 even though instructions say 3).

Then they could not verify my identity online and asked me to click selfie with my license and send those docs. They said they were refer to resume as well during verification. There was one mistake on my end though. When I applied for this job, I was employed and my resume said the details of my present employer as "xx - Present", but when the process started, I had lost my job.

Within 2 days, they sent results to my potential employer saying I failed the background check. The recruiter informed me the same and said they can't disclose the reason.

So my question is how does it work? Does Sterling sends the report to the same recruiter or someone else in the bank? And let's say it goes to someone else, and they see my file 'flagged', and they ask HR compliance team? Then does the HR compliance team ask for clarification or just decide that I misrepresented the employment details? What can I do?

I called Sterling and they said they can't disclose the results and the bank says I should go and talk to Sterling.
Where do I go and how do I know what is the issue? and then how do I challenge them? Please guide.

Hunger Games at RBC?

This is only for discussion purposes and I’m speaking from my own experience. You may have experienced differently so curious to know your thoughts.

I have two decades of working experience, including at other banks and a big tech too.
I am not in tech role. I’m in middle management on business side but have had a role in tech org too.

My observation has been that at RBC, I have felt it’s always a hunger game situation. I found people less polite here compared to other places I worked at. I also sense a feeling of ego in people and treating outsiders as if they are not as good. In other words, to outsiders, RBCers act if they are the “Apple” brand of banking.

And when it comes to within the org, I have seen people rising only by standing on someone else’s shoulder, meaning, they wouldn’t have risen up, if they had not badmouthed someone else deserving. I found people very self-centered here, and only lip service about being a family or caring for each other.

I really hope that it’s not the culture across the organization but I have spent 5 years here and this has been my experience year after year.

PS: I am moving out to another bank anyways because of this, but I would have loved to stay in RBC for rest of my work life if I had not found it so toxic here every year.

“Update on your interview” is a sign of offer or rejection?

I was interviewing with one of the Big 5 banks a month ago. Met with hiring manager who said there will be a panel interview for the next stage.

Two weeks after that interview, I didn’t hear back. I followed up with recruiter but no response. Then a week later, I followed up with hiring manager, but no response.

Today, the recruiter reached out early morning asking for my availability saying she needs to talk to me for a few mins to provide an update on my application.

I’ll find out tomorrow but I really needed this job and a bit anxious. Is that a rejection?
Any experience?

Pre employment security doing internal checks

Can someone tell me what is “pre-employment security doing internal checks”?

I read a few posts on this subreddit about people asking about Background check. They mentioned that Sterling has confirmed that their background check is complete but they are still waiting to hear back from RBC for a week or so.
In response, some people said that pre-employment security doing internal checks” and is normal.
What is this really? And do banks do this?
Can someone please explain? Thanks

What does employer share with sterling background check?

Hi, I applied for a bank in Canada, and they use Sterling back check.

In the resume I shared/applied with, has my designation as 'Sr Manager', but my actual designation is 'Director' at my most recent employer (where I was laid off). I had to downplay with my title else I was not getting any calls at all.

My worry is when Sterling will come asking for the background check, will they already have my resume from the new employer or will they verify what I write in their online form? If only online form, then I can write there my actual title 'Director', but if they are going to have resume from the employer, I worry I will be screwed.

Can someone advise what is shared with Sterling by the employer for the candidate whose background check is being done by Sterling?

Is there a way to get employment verification letter other than calling HR line?

Former RBC employee and waiting on call for 1.5 hours with HR contact center.
I only need employment verification letter.
How else can I contact them?

And what all information do they mention on the letter?

Thanks

What shall I expect in this case?

I understand that I should have handled better but I’d appreciate if for this post, if you can guide me related to my question please.

I was employed by a large organization, say company A. I received an offer from another company B (insurance). Company B initiated my onboarding process like my profile, email etc. in their system. 10 days before my joining, I was diagnosed with a new medical condition. Since I was not in a position to communicate, my family member tried to contact the Company B to inform them of the situation and request postpone my joining date. However, the new manager was not available and didn’t read emails and never responded. My family member didn’t know what else to do as they were focused on my medical situation. The manager realized on my original joining date when my family member again called them to inform. They expressed concerns and said they will talk to HR and get back.

In this whole process, I was not in a position to resign from company A either. But they didn’t initiate the STD yet. In the meanwhile, company B initiated the STD but found my case not supported since the condition started before joining so I was not eligible for benefits. They put me on unpaid leave. But their insurance system had my profile with saying “claim not supported” (I guess)

After a few days, company A started my STD when I ran out of my vacation days. They used my vacation days for the initial few days. Unfortunately their STd company turned out to be the same insurance company (Company B) where I was supposed to join. A few weeks after, the case worker tried to reach me, when I was in a position to connect, but I was worried that they will see my history and be surprised that I was employed with company A (who started my STD claim), and I had a recent record started by the same company B (although not supported).

However, I never claimed any benefits from insurance company through company A as I never spoke to them.

I joined the new company after a few days and resigned from company A. I informed the case worker that I have resigned and they said they have closed my file.

Now my worry is that on paper, I was employed with two employers at the same time, even though I never claimed any benefits. I can now see that case worker in the MA Teams, their outlook etc. and I am under constant worry and watching over my shoulder if they will report this and I might lose my job.

What can I expect now? And what to do?
