Cycling a shrimp tank
Hey everyone, I’m setting up my first heavily planted shrimp tank and wanted to know if I need another ammonia source or if my aquasoil is enough to cycle the tank.
Right now I have:
- 10 gallon tank
- aquasoil substrate
- dechlorinated tap water
- heavily planted with anacharis/elodea and moneywort
- filter running
- no fish or shrimp yet
The tank has a slight brown tint from the new setup/driftwood and I’m trying to cycle it as fast as possible so I can eventually keep neocaridina shrimp.
I’ve heard aquasoil can release ammonia on its own, but I’m not sure if I should also add fish food, bottled ammonia, snails, or a hardy fish. I was thinking about maybe using Endlers temporarily.
Do you guys think the aquasoil + plants is enough of an ammonia source, or should I add something else to speed up the cycle?
