Cycling a shrimp tank

Hey everyone, I’m setting up my first heavily planted shrimp tank and wanted to know if I need another ammonia source or if my aquasoil is enough to cycle the tank.

Right now I have:

  • 10 gallon tank
  • aquasoil substrate
  • dechlorinated tap water
  • heavily planted with anacharis/elodea and moneywort
  • filter running
  • no fish or shrimp yet

The tank has a slight brown tint from the new setup/driftwood and I’m trying to cycle it as fast as possible so I can eventually keep neocaridina shrimp.

I’ve heard aquasoil can release ammonia on its own, but I’m not sure if I should also add fish food, bottled ammonia, snails, or a hardy fish. I was thinking about maybe using Endlers temporarily.

Do you guys think the aquasoil + plants is enough of an ammonia source, or should I add something else to speed up the cycle?

This is day two of my tank. What else should I do? I am doing neocaridinia and waiting for cycle? Do I have too much in my tank?

New to the hobby - planted tank for Neocaridina cherry shrimp, does everything look okay?

Hey everyone just set up my first tank and would love some feedback. I have a 10 gallon with Fluval Stratum, two sponge filters, and a Fluval Sea EVO light(from old tank). For plants I have anacharis, pearlweed, moneywort and java moss on some Mopani driftwood.

I used API Quick Start and tap water conditioner. The water is pretty murky right now which I'm assuming is normal for a new tank with fresh Fluval Stratum? Both sponge filters are running and it seems to be clearing up slowly.

Planning to cycle for about 4 weeks before adding Neocaridina red cherry shrimp. Hoping the pearlweed will carpet over time without CO2.

My main questions are does this setup look good for Neocaridina, is the murky water normal and how long will it take to clear, can pearlweed carpet without CO2, and is Fluval Stratum okay for cherry shrimp? Also wondering if I'm missing anything important before adding shrimp.

Still need to get the API Master Test Kit but planning to grab that soon. Thanks!

PS: Ended up finding the cover with thelight so now its covering hold tank

Plant/shrimp tank

Hi I need some help. I want to start an ecosystem, so I started by adding aqua soil and water but now reading up maybe I shouldn’t have done it. I have drift wood coming tomorrow what steps should I take for rest of tank. Please help!
