Is this legal in two-species counterpoint?
So I’m working on my two-species counterpoint (because I want to hate on Bach more accurately) and I arrived at this part and faced a conundrum.
There is two dissonant intervals on the downbeats, this is a big no-no as all downbeats must be consonant. Yet, for some reason I cannot help but feel the dissonance here (resolved by a perfect interval at the climax) really gives it a powerful propelling force forward (especially when smoother by consonant intervals on the weak beats. But it’s disastrously wrong.
So my questions are
Are my ears untrained which is why this sounds good to me even though it’s bad? What do you think?
If it does sound good or propelling, why?
Is this allowed at all in counterpoint? Or am I now missing the purpose of the counterpoint exercise and applying general music theory concepts to what should be a limited practice exercise?
Thanks!
Note: ignore the rest of the bar after the climax, still need to edit that part
