Nightruby - the night casts no shadow (Review)

Album link - https://nightruby.bandcamp.com/album/the-night-casts-no-shadow

Nightruby is back with what I think would be best described as the musical equivalent of blowing dust off of the sleeve of an old favorite vinyl. the night casts no shadow delivers a dusky, dark, and dusty set of beats perfect for those long nights where you should really be asleep, but things you may or may not have consumed are keeping you awake. There must be something in the water that the Trip Hop creators are drinking this month. We've seen some of the artists' best work this month, and as far as this album is concerned, nightruby is not breaking this trend.

"Memories of a past life" is one of the best album openers of the year. The drums come out of nowhere and establish a groove contrary to what you thought was there. It sets the tone perfectly for what is to come. As a matter of fact, most of that first paragraph was written listening to this track. Unsurprisingly, the solid cohesion that follows allows it to still relate once the album is completed.

"Asylum" incorporates some Asian instrumentation that allows a little peek of sunlight through the blinds of your room whilst the darkness holds on to the moment. A small sign of the reality outside this perfect atmosphere, but not too much to alter it completely.

"Eternal mist" ensures we stay locked in to this moment in our comfortable and dark space just as the sunlight of early morning breaks through the blinds in our room and allows the listener to hang on to this vibe just before the next day begins.

"Metal meadows" offers up a chair to sink into and embrace the closing moments of this dark and dusty moment. The sun is up now, your blinds are holding on to the final moments of darkness before your mental state normalizes and you open them to reveal the day ahead.

"Darkness" provides some El-P style vocal delivery to give you a soundtrack for the morning walk to the shop, while "twilight vision" really encapsulates the last moments of early mornings in finite realities.

This album really took me to specific moments of my youth and lit them up for the first time in a very long time, and reminded me of the actual good times spent with friends in those moments. It's a really great album and, as I said at the outset, nightruby's best work to date.

C60 Podcast - EP001 Lezarath

Hello peeps

This is something I thought about doing for a while and also it's definitely going to be a great way for us to get to know each other more from a music perspective.

The format of the episodes are 2 songs picked that inspired the artist's music and 2 songs of their own with conversation in-between.

Maybe it will give us inspiration, maybe it will be interesting, maybe we will just enjoy listening, or maybe it will be none of those things.

Regardless, here is a big hello from the C60 Podcast and it's first episode where I'm talking to Lezarath.

Hope you enjoy ✌️

Mighty the Goat - East/West - Review

Mighty the Goat delivers a magnificent treat with this new EP, a project that oozes atmospheric darkness and creates a compelling sense of uncertainty, all delivered with a clear artistic purpose. It is evident that the artist is firmly in his lane here, perhaps more so than on any previous release. There is a sharp sense of focus across these tracks, resulting in a vibe that feels as though Mighty is at his most confident and comfortable.

The opener, "Under One," sets the tone for the record perfectly. To draw perhaps a bit of a deep cut, the track evokes the exact same energy as Cloudkicker’s exceptional EP Let Yourself Be Huge. While the two projects may not sound identical superficially, they share a similar feel.

"Collapse On Me" seamlessly continues the scene established by the opener but pushes the darkness up a level. This shift is driven particularly by the excellent harmonic minor guitar work, which fills the entire headspace of the track alongside some wonderful, immersive effects panning.

"Spinning Wheel" stands out as a definitive highlight of the collection. Mighty manages the overall atmosphere of the project beautifully here, crafting a soundscape that plays like a darker, more nocturnal version of Thievery Corporation. There is a wealth of subtle activity happening just beneath the surface, including a brilliant, low-sitting layer in the mix that adds a fantastic texture to the groove (I'm always down for a clav).

"Social Distortion" brings the EP to a flawless conclusion. The track serves as another stellar example of how to balance distinct textures within a composition, utilizing them to manage the song's dynamics with expert precision.

Ultimately, this is easily Mighty’s most cohesive and self-assured release to date. The project gives a strong impression that the artist has truly found his signature vibe, establishing a brilliant creative blueprint for future releases. With great production and exceptional songwriting, this is a truly fantastic EP.

Great Beat Relay - June

Hello everyone

we are going again 💪

Can you please comment if you would like to be involved in this month's Beat Relay. This will be run from the 15th of every month to ensure it does not coincide with the monthly sample challenge.

The beat relay has the following rules;

- the BPM does not change

- Each contributing artist creates 16 bars only

- Each artist passes the stems of the last 2 bars to the next artist

- Each artist creates their folder and uploads their full 16 bar stems in this location - https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1mLnTCOYROJEtjMPWczPX2oSmCchInHap

- The next artist in the relay is always chosen by the previous artist

- When you are given the 2 bars, incorporate them within what you write in your 16 as best you can. We want what feels like a song rather than a mixtape or DJ set

When you are exporting your 16 bars, please don't include the 2 that was given to you by the previous. Every artist should end up with 2+16 bars and only exporting the 16.

Hope this was clear and makes things a little smoother this month.

I hope as many people as possible get involved

Pölysormi - Hidastus (Review)

We are back with what definitely is for sure I promise Pölysormi’s 2,379th album, Hidastus, an immersive project that captures the artist at his most liberated and boundless. Serving as his first Subvert exclusive, which is free for members, the release is accompanied by one of the finest pieces of cover art in his catalog, a visual that matches the sonic atmosphere of the album perfectly.

The journey opens with "Clear Bad," a track that would not have felt out of place during Porcupine Tree’s Signify era. This is certainly not a comparison one expects to draw when reviewing a Trip Hop artist, but given that it is simply Pölysormi doing what he does best, the surprise is a welcome one. From there, the record ascends into a series of perfectly executed arrangements that possess the organic energy of live jams, though they are strictly sample-based. The sheer sense of creative freedom sustained up to this point is rather excellent.

This momentum leads directly into what is currently a strong contender for track of the year. "Fay Flight" is superb, blending the nocturnal darkness with a unique execution. Strategically placed in the tracklist for maximum impact, the song carries a heavy, atmospheric weight that would feel right at home on an ISIS or Neurosis record.

Proceeding through the tracklist, "Iakonia" introduces a subtle pinch of dub into the mix, briefly pivoting away from the live-jam aesthetic. It is followed by "Dolale," which hits the listener with an ominous choir arrangement before shifting into percussion and bass textures reminiscent of Mr. Oizo. There is a delightful intimacy to the production here. I also feel I know the exact vinyl source of that choir sample.

This penultimate track sets the stage beautifully for the finale, "flower Borgbacken." The closing track teases with a delicate flute melody before delivering powerful, DJ Shadow-style drums, bringing the album to a close in a wave of beautifully eerie darkness.

Hidastus is a genuinely surprising record. This is not because the quality is beyond Pölysormi’s established capabilities, but rather because such an intriguing, genre-expanding album was released in such a delightfully casual, nonchalant manner. Cheers for yet another exceptional record, Pölysormi.

REARM - 1999 (Beyond the Visible Mix)

Hello hello peeps

A good friend of mine recently got involved with this month's Sample Challenge. He hasn't posted any of his projects here despite them having many trip hop elements so I thought it would be good to give his music a proper shout out.

In the link is the project of his that remixed Makkaratalo's track this month called REARM. I strongly recommend you check his stuff out. His drums have been an inspiration for me for a long time now. Is compositions are uncompromising and he's an all round top bloke. Hard to believe we met online simply from agreeing on a Facebook post that Jilted Generation is one of the greatest albums ever made 🤣

Here is his remix submission for this Mays remix challenge

Community Beat Tape Update

Hello trip hop family

I am now VERY excited. We are less than 1 week away from the release of our very first Beat Tape. Our first community tape, Trip Hop Isn't Dead sold out in 4 days. I have high hopes this will sell even quicker.

To reiterate, the charity that the money from this tape will be donated to us Doctors Without Borders. I'm very proud to say our last tape raised around €250 for this incredible charity. I know for certain we will do the same again.

There WILL be a livestream which will be arranged closer to the time. This will be on YouTube via Dungeon Radio. I am hopeful to get as many of you who have contributed to the tape on the stream as possible along with any of your friends.

It's a 90min masterpiece and I'm so grateful for all of you who are not only making this happen, but making it is incredibly easy and thoroughly enjoyable.

Let's keep smashing it!

Waximilian Hornblower Presents...Waximum Beats Live Stream

Hello beautiful people.

Above is the link to the labels Live Stream of my album that will be officially released at 1900 (BST) which to make the time zone difference easier, is 5h from now.

This is the first time I've approached a shorter song format and decided I needed an alter ego inspired by Lovage by Dan the Automator.

This however does not sound like a beat tape in a traditional sense. I'm trying to have some fun with the format and attempt to take it to places I haven't heard beat tapes go.

It would be amazing for you to visit the livestream. I will be in the comments.

There will also be links to the labels Bandcamp where the physical tapes can be purchased with all profits being donated to the charity supporting mental health Mind. Additionally, when you buy the tape you will be provided with a free album code to download a Side C of the tape which is all of the B Sides that didn't make the album. This B Side album will never be released and will only be available to those who buy the tape.

Hopefully see you in 5 hours peeps 💪

A New Beat Tape is Coming

Helooooo Peopleeeeee

Seen as my attempt at a cryptic post went down badly IMMEDIATELY, i may as well post this now as I was going to post tomorrow anyway.

Inspired by Dan the Automator' Lovage, I decided it was time for a beat tape alter ego.

On the 29th May @1800 UK time I will be dropping my first ever beat tape. The album will be streamed live on Dungeon Radios YouTube and it would be amazing for anyone that fancies dropping by to listen and chat.

Any physical purchase of the tape, not only will be donated to the UK Charity Mind, but will also come with a free 13 track digital album of B Sides for free. These will never be released and will only be given away with tape sales.

Enter - Waximilian Hornblower.

Attached is the art and track list, which will undoubtedly come as a surprise to some of you 😉.

I'm actually rather excited about this.

Peace, Love and Trip Hop
