How does CAIE / Edexcel A-Level History work structurally? (Like Math modules?)
Hey everyone,
I’m an international private candidate thinking of dropping Physics and picking up A-Level History (and English Language).
I'm used to how A-Level Math works where it’s very structured and modular: you just take P1, P2, P3, P4, and choose something like M1 or S1. It’s simple to understand the exam layout.
How exactly does History work in comparison? I know it’s split into 4 papers across AS and A2, but the syllabus booklets look like massive, overwhelming menus.
- Do I actually have to study every single topic listed in the syllabus for a paper, or do I just pick a specific route/option that I like and ignore the rest?
- On exam day, do they give you options to choose which essay questions you want to answer based on what you studied?
- As a private candidate self-studying from home, which boards (CAIE vs. Edexcel IAL) or specific topic combinations (like International History/Cold War) are the most manageable or have the best resources?
Would love any insights from people who have taken it or are self-studying it. Thanks!
