Is the food really that bad?

Does the dining hall food actually live up to the horror stories, or do people exaggerate it for likes?

Also, if it's truly bad, how hard is it to find something that's at least edible at each meal?

Dual-Licensure in Special & General Education?

Incoming high school senior and prospective teacher here!

I just discovered that one of my top college choices offers an "inclusive education" major with dual-licensure in elementary and special education. This sounded like a dream come true until I heard stories of special educators being pigeon-holed into special education by school districts that only allow certified special educators to teach special education, not allowing them to teach other subjects that have less of a shortage.

How big is the pigeon-holing problem really? Are pigeon-holed special educators the majority or a vocal minority? Any other thoughts on this dual licensure opportunity are also welcome.

Music ensembles and theater productions for non-majors

Prospective Woodring student here! How difficult is it to get into music ensembles and theater productions at WWU if you're not majoring in music or theater? I know there are clubs, but I'm curious about official school groups and shows.

Pre-admitted: red flag?

I've gotten emails from three mediocre universities (Northern Arizona, Montana State, and Wichita State) saying I'm "pre-admitted." Is this a green flag that they want me, or a red flag that they're desperate for decent students to consider them?

WUE Education Programs

What are some of the best WUE schools for elementary and/or special education majors? My home state (Colorado) has some great programs, but I'm curious what other options are out there for a reasonable price.

If this isn't the right place for this question, please let me know; I originally asked r/applyingtocollege and didn't get many comments.

Deciding Where to Study and Start a Teaching Career in the U.S.

I'm an incoming high school senior and an aspiring teacher hoping to teach or at least have the option to teach both elementary and middle school in my career. I was yesterday years old when I learned that an "elementary" license covers different grade levels in different states.

In my home state of Colorado, "elementary" means K-6. I'd love to teach somewhere like Washington where elementary covers middle school as well, but the thing is, I'm in love with the University of Northern Colorado and the idea of being a quick drive away from my brother's baseball games and my younger friends' theater performances.

Is it worth it to go to college out of state to learn how and get licensed to teach K-8 right off the bat? Or should I go to UNC and take extra exams in a few years to add a middle school license?

Any recommendations on WUE schools for an education degree would also be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Exceptions to the "Western Freeze"

I am an out-of-state high school senior looking into WWU for a degree in elementary education. This school sounds awesome, but I'm concerned about finding friends due to accounts of the "western freeze" (a phenomenon where it is notoriously hard to break into social circles at WWU).

In your experiences, does the freeze exist equally in all programs, and can it be avoided by participating in extracurriculars? Specifically, do education students tend to be friendlier and/or have an easier time finding friends? And do students have an easier time finding a community if they join clubs, music groups, and theater productions?

Gender Labels for Intersex People

How do labels of trans, cis, etc, work for intersex people? Like, if you're intersex and identify as male or female, does that make you trans since you don't have a binary male or female reproductive system? Is a non-binary intersex person considered cis? How does it all work?

For context, I have a condition that was dismissed as a birth defect when I was young and I just found out that it's inconsistently considered an intersex variation. I hadn't quite figured out my gender before this and now it's even more confusing. Apologies for my utter cluelessness.

Colorado State University vs. University of Northern Colorado (Education)

Rising senior and aspiring teacher teacher here, planning to get a bachelor's degree at one of these two schools.

CSU doesn't offer an elementary or special education major, so if I choose one of those paths, I will go to UNC. If I major in early childhood education or a secondary subject area, however, it will be difficult to decide between these two.

UNC outshines CSU in my two highest priorities; their education program and on-campus housing. CSU outshines UNC in just about everything else; extracurriculars, research, surrounding area, study abroad opportunities, etc.

Please share your thoughts about these two schools individually or comparatively if you can!

The family pleasantly surprised me with their interest in hiking during our SD vacation! Horse feces was abundant, but the scenery was beautiful.

Hiking Recs in Western South Dakota

Looking for trail recommendations that meet the following criteria:

  1. Must be in or near Hill City, South Dakota.

  2. Must have a steady flow of hikers; never empty.

  3. Must not be especially difficult in terms of balance or navigation.

Explanation: My family is taking a road trip to SD soon and staying in Hill City. I'm not allowed to hike alone on trails without steady traffic, but I'll be states away from anyone who would be interested in hiking with me. Also, though I'm relatively fit, I'm a newbie to hiking. An endurance challenge is fine; getting lost or taking a dangerous fall is not.

Thanks!

Koko Crater Railway (Hawaii, U.S.A.)

Spent the early hours of my birthday with an intense leg workout on the Koko Crater ("Koko Head") Railway, rewarded with stunning views of Oahu's coast. My thighs are dead, but it was so worth it!

Making friends in high school vs. college as an autistic person

Autistic people who have experienced high school and college, in which setting did you have an easier time making friends?

I've always assumed college would be easier since you have more people and groups to choose from and students are generally more mature, but I've come across a lot of people on this site who say it's easier to make friends in high school. I'm curious to hear autistic perspectives specifically in case there's a different trend for us.

I'm mainly curious about comparison here, but general tips for making friends in either setting are also greatly appreciated!
