I’m making a survivors-like with an inventory puzzle between waves

Hey! I’m making a survivors-like called Bulgasari.

It’s a Brotato-ish action roguelike where you power up your character by solving a puzzle in your inventory. Instead of just picking upgrades, you collect pieces and try to fit them together into a good build as the run goes on.

The playtest is live now, so I’d really appreciate it if you gave it a try.

A full run currently takes around 15–30 minutes, and the playtest goes up to Wave 15. I’m still not very confident about the balance after Wave 10 though. I’m planning to rework that part pretty heavily later when I add boss battles, so the late-game balance is still pretty rough right now.

It’s still an alpha, so there are definitely going to be bugs, balance issues, and unfinished stuff. If you run into anything weird, or just have thoughts or ideas about the game, please join the Discord and tell me.

There are barely any people in there right now, so don’t feel awkward about jumping in lol. Any kind of feedback or ideas are welcome, and I’d love to put everyone who helped out in the credits later.

I also uploaded a web build on itch.io, so you can play that version if you don’t want to install the Steam build.

There’s still a lot I’m planning to add:

  • New playable characters
  • Boss battles
  • More items
  • Additional difficulty options
  • Save & Continue
  • Controller support
  • Victory & Defeat sequences
  • Improved VFX
  • New gameplay features and systems
  • Achievements
  • More language support
  • Better title screen
  • Better tutorial

So yeah, please give it a try if you have some time. I’d especially like to hear what other survivors-like players think about the inventory system and overall balance.

Getting my game ready for a playtest next week

I’m planning to launch a Steam playtest and upload a demo to itch sometime next week.

I’m hoping to gather as much feedback as possible, release a proper Steam demo later this year, and then launch the full game near the end of this year or early next year.

Wishlist would be greatly appreciated!

I just updated the shop UI for my game. What do you think?

The old UI had too many items on screen, and it was inconvenient that you couldn’t see the item details unless you hovered over them, so I decided to update it. I also tried to make it look a bit nicer. Any feedback?

My game is a roguelite where you power up your character through puzzles. If it looks interesting, feel free to check it out!

Do people actually discover and play Steam playtests?

I feel like there’s a limit to how much marketing I can do without a demo, so I’m trying to make one as soon as possible.

But at the same time, some people say you should release your demo as close to launch as possible, when it’s as polished as it can be.

I recently learned that you can set up a Steam Playtest, but since I’ve never personally joined a playtest for another game, I’m wondering whether people actually play them.

Do you usually play Steam Playtests? And does this strategy sound reasonable?

Steam Playtest -> marketing -> demo -> Steam Next Fest -> launch

I've replaced all of the enemy sprites in my game.

While defining the game's world and visual direction, I realized they all needed to be reworked. It was a lot of work, but I'm happy with the result.
