Best mobile deal

I’m with Telus currently paying $45+ tax postpay monthly no contract for 100 gb Canada/us. Used to be $35/m but a -$10/m credit ran out recently after 6 months.

today was offered $20/m prepay no contract for 25 gb Canada only from Chatr (4G LTE data, slower than telus), with first month free, must buy $10 SIM card. I’m considering it since don’t need so much data and rarely call/travel to US.

my question is will Telus potentially give me a better deal on mobile if I’m a Chatr customer rather than telus? I need to re-negotiate internet soon since two year contract is expiring and doubt they’ll renew my $55/m 1 Gbps deal. but maybe if I’m willing to move from Chatr to telus mobile at the same time they’ll offer me better deal?

I know a bit convoluted but wondering if being non-telus mobile customer is better negotiating position for internet renewal + mobile plan. thanks!

$20/m 25gb, free first month

at mall today, booth was offering $20/m prepaid for 25 gb Canada calling, international text on chatr with first month free, “this weekend only”

is this a good deal? I’m seriously considering as a pay $45/m post pay currently for telus 5G 100 gb North America, but rarely go to or call US and don’t care about fast data or lots of data.

would love to hear thoughts on if this is a good promo from Chatr and if people see any issues. I must purchase a $10 sim to get the deal.

Reminder why I switched to WS

I’ve moved to WS chequing but still have a big bank chequing account. I was at the green branch this morning because I was hoping they might waive the $29.95 monthly account fee I’d been charged at the end of the month since on a single day in July, my balance dipped below the $6000 minimum to get the fee waived.

The teller agreed to do so as a one-time courtesy and recommend for my situation that I open a savings account since there is no minimum balance and no monthly fee. I inquired what the interest rate was, since she hadn’t provided this information in her pitch. Drum roll please 🥁 0.01%

Grateful to be earning over 200 times the interest rate with Wealthsimple!

Scanned

Not part of this community, just wanted to say that a family member went to https://neodoh.company to buy, site looks very legit, and the payment was declined.

Received phone call from fraud department of credit card. Turns out the website is a scam.

Wanted to share to caution others.

EDIT: Title should say SCAMMED (autocorrect). I’ve reported to abuse@dynadot.com that provides the domain according to WHOIS . Dynadot is in california

Thanks WealthSimple

Want to express my gratitude for the folks over at WealthSimple. It’s hard to keep up with the flood of new features, products, and services they have on offer.

This type of aggressive innovation is refreshing and a huge service to Canadians, both customers if WealthSimple but also customers of Questrade or big 5. We’ve seen those companies introduce amazing promos (account transfer bonuses) and products (no fee ETFs, fractional shares) to remain competitive.

Thank you, WealthSimple!

Automation Question

Is there a way that I can deposit (a portion of) my paycheque directly into a WS non-registered investing account that will then automatically purchase the full amount into XEQT?

I’ve been doing this manually - so twice a month part of my pay cheque goes from big bank to WS chequing account, and then I manually move to WS investing account, then I manually purchase XEQT.

I’m probably being stupid and ignoring new features, so is there a way to all money moved into a WS chequing to auto buy XEQT? And then instead of moving into WS chequing, I’ll move my paycheque directly into the WS investing account?

Thanks!!

GICs at Questrade

I don't see many people discuss this, so just wanted to give a plug for purchasing GICs at Questrade.

It is done through their fixed income desk on web browser. You can choose from a long list of GICs from financial institutions across Canada (Equitable Bank, MCAN Mortgage Corp, Community Trust, FirstOntarioCU, big banks, etc.) and there is no cost to purchase. This service may be available from other discount brokerages (not Wealth Simple).

So today, through Questrade I purchased a 3.36% 1 year GIC and a 2 year 3.63% GIC (compounded annually, paid at maturity, not cashable).

I believe these rates are much higher than I could get from my big green bank, and I do not need the hassle of opening an account with another institution just to chase the yield.

Hope this helps someone who didn't know!

DRS Advice statement

I am a big WealthSimple and Questrade fan but these firms charge an eye gauging $250 and $300 respectively for the DRS Advice statement, compared to $50 or $100 from the major banks, and under $10 from IBKR.

What is a DRS Advice statement? It allows you to move shares/units of stocks and some ETFs (e.g. XIC) to direct registration. The shares will be registered in your name, you will be a shareholder of record. You can then buy for free, true DRIP fractional shares, usually get onto an automatic share purchase plan, sometimes purchase more shares at discount to market prices (e.g. 2% discount).

Obviously, a direct threat to cost-saving value that Questrade and WealthSimple offer.
