Is my old paint still good?
TDLR; Can I still use my paint that has been sealed up for 10 years? Unreduced and no activator or anything. Was unopened the whole time until just now because I'm an idiot and opened it and want to use it. Can it be mixed back up again or am I cooked?
Okay, so this is a bit of a weird request but please bare with me...
A very, very long time ago my first wife and I both own two Hondas. She had an AP1 S2000 and I had a DC2 Integra Type R. I was planning on painting my car in Long Beach Blue Pearl which is an NSX color code and my ex-wife really liked the color so she wanted me to paint her S2000 to match it.
I bought the paint at Finish Master and it was a whole gallon unreduced. I thought that would be enough to paint both cars since they're both very small cars.
Then the Army sent me to Afghanistan to do a double 18 and then four tours in Iraq after that, so my project got put on pause. I left the paint over at mom and dad's house in their basement during this whole ordeal.
After returning to the states, I had gotten remarried to my new wife and had completely lost interest in the Integra project for a couple more years as the car just sat over at my parents spot up in the suburbs.
Now I just went over to visit and saw that can of paint in the basement and wonder "There's no way in hell this paint is still good, right?" So I open it and it smelled like magic marker. There wasn't any "sour" smell and no fishiness. Nothing really looked out of sorts surprisingly.
But the pigment did separate and there's lumps at the bottom.
If I could scrap the shit off the bottom and mix it back up real good, is this usable or should I just throw it out? I know how to paint pretty darn well, but I've never used paint this old before and don't actually know what's gonna happen.
It would be a shame to throw it out because this paint was expensive for what it is (nothing compared to today's pricing, but still expensive).
Note: Paint is still un-reduced and nothing was mixed into it.
