Picked up a free HTC Vive 1st Gen!

I was on my local buy/sell/trade group when I saw a free listing for an HTC vive pop up, and immediately I knew I wanted it. VR is one of those things I've been wanting to try out for many many years (even pre-pandemic), but could never justify paying the prices they command- especially since I have a very heavy biconcave glasses prescription that made me wonder if my glasses would even fit in a VR headset at all (I literally cannot see anything beyond a couple cm's in front of me w/o my glasses, which also means VR headsets are completely useless without them).

In other words, my real cheapskate ass in combination with my absolutely hideous eyesight made me hesitate for YEARS on end from considering the idea of getting a headset. But at the very least I did watch VRChat videos (especially Shiba King) to get a mild sense of what VR would be like.

Anyways...after figuring out meeting arrangements, picking up the headset (and eventually the required Wifi card that the guy forgot to give to us...) the headset actually works and does VR things like it should. Obviously for being free, it's not going to be perfect since it's missing one of the base stations (needs to be gen 1, not gen 2) and of course it's a 1st gen HTC Vive, which is "terrible" by today's standards but one I'm actually fine with (especially since I'm used to looking through absolutely dreadful EVF's in 90's & 2000's cameras that will give you a migraine).

In all honesty I'm just giddy to have a real VR headset at all! Looking forward to installing VRChat and some other VR supported games that I've always wanted to try out. I know VRChat is supported on PC and other platforms, but it's just not the same to me without the motion tracking.

BTW yes my glasses do actually fit in the headset! Looks & works great. No complaints on this end.

My Nikon D70 fell victim to the black screen of death 💔

Last time I used my D70 was only a month ago (which worked perfectly then), and in that time it's been sitting unused and untouched until I turned it on today to take an extreme macro photo with my Tokina AT-X Pro 35mm F2.8 lens and was greeted with this, no matter how much light I threw at the sensor (Bulb mode or not).

I was hoping to take the Tokina with me to the Oregon coast for this 4th of July (since I also mainly use it as a prime lens and for that it's incredible!), but I doubt that'll happen. It's a screw drive lens and my D70 is the only body I have with screw drive AF.

Am I missing something here?

I was given this Panasonic PV-DV401D to try and repair since it wouldn't play or record tapes. No errors would pop up on the LCD or viewfinder but the red power LED would blink twice suggesting a Supply Reel issue.

So far I've checked the gears on both reels and neither appear to be cracked (nor do I hear any signs of cracked gears), but I did notice the bottom (larger) gear under the top white gear hardly budges at all, regardless of whether the top gear moves clockwise or counterclockwise. I don't know if this is normal or not, so if anyone could help out/knows more about this tape deck that would be appreciated.

Have you guys ever found anyone using digicams "in the wild" within the past couple of years?

For me, I've seen about 2 or 3 people using a digital point & shoot camera in-person out at ordinary places like a restaurant here in southern WA state. I remember one seemed to have been using a Sony Cybershot of some model (judging by the beep noises it made). The other instance I remember was being seated right next to a party of 6 gals sharing pictures taken with a Canon G7X.

But even as a young dude that almost never leaves the apartment without a camera in my hand, I find it a little weird that despite how popular & "trendy" the digicam craze is, I almost never find anyone actually using an old digicam in public except at meets and cons. Even at my local community college I seem to be the only real digicam user there.

Is it just me or am I living in the wrong area?

[TOMT][GAME OST][2000s] Looking for music soundtracks from very specific games

Hi all, I'm looking for a direct recording of the music soundtracks that were on a couple Didj games, those being Indiana Jones (Kingdom of the crystal skull) and Wolverine and the X-Men. Both have orchestral tracks which I really quite like and am very nostalgic about, considering I played both games on both a Didj and leapster explorer as a young kid when they were new. Mainly I'm looking to get an .mp3 copy of the soundtracks so I can enjoy them with headphones and not have to listen through the awful tinny speaker from the gameplays and sfx.

For reference here's a gameplay of both games. https://youtu.be/aTtq4dIhZq0 https://youtu.be/l-HFEAdgLYk

Today's score: MINT condition Nikon D40

I picked up a lot of 5 cameras for a total of $30, and this was included in that lot.

This particular D40 came with a standard 18-55mm kit lens, but the lens was... missing parts to say the least. So I borrowed my 18-55mm DX VR from my D3200. The body however, was in MINT condition! Not a scratch or blemish that I can see anywhere. Just beautiful. It also came with a 2GB Lexar card and the original battery that actually still had some charge left in it!

I checked the shutter count and was shocked to see how little use it actually had. Less than 800 actuations....which I find mind-boggling. This is definitely a keeper.

The only maintenance it needed was a sensor cleaning and it's pretty much good to go. I will take it with me to my next local meet later this June.

[IIL] house music with piano, [WEWIL]?

I have a couple house tracks that involve the piano in them and I'm looking for more. Send me any YouTube links to ones I might like- no paid steaming services, please.

What are these magenta/green lines in the pics?

For reference I was shooting at F4, 1/8000s @ ISO 200 for all pics with my Nikon D70. These are all unedited (SOOC).

Lens used is a Tokina AT-X Pro 35mm F2.8 macro/prime.

What is this unlabeled feature on my TR940?

I believe it's for taking still photos to tape but I'm not entirely sure. The manual for the TR940 says ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about it having a still photo feature, and mentions nothing about the fact that the lever goes past the standby mode.

NuJazz, Breakbeat and downtempo from early 00's

I've recently discovered Soulparlor with their 2002 NuJazz/downtempo/breakbeat Album "The Way We Talk" and I've been more or less obsessed with it since. I'm looking for recommendations similar to the album but it doesn't have to be from the same era. Just that it caters to the same genres.

Here's a couple examples for reference. https://youtu.be/Obvjk-nWSdI https://youtu.be/-lyR6-w9yoI "What Goes Around..." (Couldn't find any leads)

[IIL] Deep House/Nujazz/Downtempo by Soulparlor, [WEWIL]?

Couple examples from their 2002 album, "The way we talk" just to give a sort of reference. I find the bass lines particularly cool and funky. #1 #2

My system (Visonik Davids + Pinnacle Subsonic)

I found the David's "in the wild" for only 50 bucks with the owner's manual. The sub was a $70 craigslist find that needed some troubleshooting but works great now. I recently upgraded to a Mirage PS-8 since I wanted something with more oomph and displacement, but I will be keeping the pinnacle sub.

Picked up these four camcorders for free yesterday.

Left to right: Sony CCD-TR940, CCD-TRV22, Proscan PRO998LH, Panasonic PV-L658D

The TR940 doesn't have a working record button (does nothing when you press record) and has issues with playback (all you get is a blue screen and occasional colorful flickering lines). Everything else works fine.

CCD-TRV12 is completely dead. Does absolutely nothing in record or playback. Tape eject did work once but even that's no longer working now. I tried both a known good working 3rd party battery, and two dummy batteries on two different Sony power adapters.

Proscan was/is very janky. It eats tapes and needs a lot of DCV to work without cutting power/shorting out the power adapter. Funny enough in my testing the halogen spotlight actually burned out, and the AC adaptor/charger that the camera originally came with actually doesn't have enough voltage to power it properly lol (if I tried to play tapes or record it would kill the AC adaptor unless I unplugged the AC adapter from the wall for a couple minutes). Only annoying thing is you can't use any standard Sony infolithium battery or AA battery pack, the original battery has a 3rd pin in the middle which none of my other batteries have. Of course it no longer holds a charge.

The panasonic on the far right is the only one that actually works perfect, even though it's ironically the camcorder in the worst condition (viewfinder has broken plastic). Just needs a new battery & compatible charger, which shouldn't be too hard to do.

Is this even fixable/replaceable?

Cracked gear causes recording/playback to be unstable, but only when the tape is advancing forwards. Rewinding in playback is smooth. This is in the tape transport of a Sony DCR-HC21 with a good touch panel LCD and CCD.

u/Romeo_Wolf — 2 months ago

I was trying to figure out why my uncle's DCR-TRV250 refuses to record or play back tapes (c.31:23) when I noticed this part seemed to be loose. It's not rattling around inside the tape transport...yet, but I don't think you're supposed to be able to wiggle it that easily.

This is the only Digital8 camcorder I have and it would be nice to have the ability to transport Hi8 Tape digitally via FW to my 2007 iMac. Sadly I won't get to have that experience probably anytime soon.

I have a Pinnacle Subsonic (the version with the dual 6.5" woofers) that I found on craigslist a couple years ago and fixed some air leaks on. It's been a great little subwoofer, very musical and plays quite low for the size (28Hz @ -3Db). Just about perfect for classical music (take a listen) and anything that isn't too demanding, like nujazz or downtempo.

The only problem I have is that it really struggles with basslines that are also bouncy (jouncy?) and jittery. Especially kick drums. The drivers quickly run out of excursion, and it's not like they're terribly long throw to begin with. Add the fact that they're both in a tiny 8" x 8" x 8" sealed enclosure which doesn't help matters. But for a subwoofer this small, can you really expect it to have a ton of oomph?

Despite the pinnacle's shortcoming, I absolutely love it to bits and would never trade it for anything else. All that said I am considering getting a slightly larger sub sometime in the future, purely just for music listening and so I can enjoy my more bass-heavy tracks. Probably an 8", maybe a 10" or 12". I live in a 3rd story apartment so can't turn it up too loud.

For reference here's a couple songs that I listen to/use for torture testing:

#1 #2 #3 #4

For equipment I use a pair of Visonik David 502's as sats, and a Fosi BT20A which does not have an LFE (I use speaker level connections). Room is 10' x 12' x 10' but there is nowhere to put the sub except under my desk and in the corner.

I typically listen at fairly moderate levels, around 60-65DbA.

Budget is around $200 US. I'll be looking in my local area (Vancouver WA/Portland OR).

I've been looking for this one very specific orchestral track that I heard on an extremely specific video from a YT channel that no longer exists, and I've been looking for it for at least 5 years if not more.

As far as I remember the channel was called Oluv's Gadgets (formerly known as Clavinetjunkie), and it was from one of their most popular videos comparing a Fugoo XL against the JBL Xtreme. According to filmot it was uploaded in early 2015 (March or so).

The song itself was just a small snippet. I remember hearing bowed bass and violin, but not much else. I can't describe specifically how it played but I remember it being moderately slow...not terribly slow but not chaotic either.

I recently found what I believe is the correct composer, Henry Purcell. However he has so many compositions that it's hard for me to even figure out where to start. So if you guys could help me out, that would be great. If you remember watching the video, even better.
