Poles or no poles

Starting the Kumano Kodo on Thursday, and getting reeeaaally excited. Maybe see some of you on the path!

Iv seen a few recommending hiking poles, and was wanting to see what others thought

I’m 32, fit and healthy, with a decent amount of steep mountain hiking experience, all without poles. I’ll be carrying only clothes + camera with me & I’m reluctant to add something new to my kit/approach this late in the game, thinking:

- will poles really be useful in steep sections, when I like to lean into the mountain anyway?

- will the added weight throw me off balance?

- Will they prevent me grabbing rocks, roots etc when I need to stabilise myself?

If the resounding group answer is “yes, they are necessary” I will try to grab some in Osaka.

Keen to hear everyone’s thoughts.

Sitting Zazen

Hi everyone!
Zen Buddhist travelling through Japan, and keen for a chance to sit zazen with a local sangha.

I’m not looking for an introduction or guided practice, just an opportunity to slot in with the everyday practice of a local sangha. Less an opportunity for tourism, more for sharing in practice. Maybe this is not possible, it is certainly hard to find online.

I tried to register at Daisen-in in Daitoku-Ji (Kyoto), but they are already full up.

Can anyone point me towards another possible place in Kyoto? Or, if not Kyoto, Osaka or Nagano?

Kumano Foods

Hi everyone,

I'm soon going to lock in my 5 day Nakahechi pilgrimage in October (who knows, maybe I'll bump into some of you there!).

Because of late booking, I'm mostly staying in hostels that don't advertise breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I'm not a stranger to hiking with my food but would rather avoid it, especially as I'm not too familiar with Japan's portable/instant food scene.

How likely will I be able to pick up food in the various towns and villages? I'm planning to stay at:

  • Takajiri Oji
  • Tsugizakura Oji
  • Yunomine Onsen
  • Koguchi

Huge gratitude for this online group full of useful information!

Where to buy: Adidas Japan VH boots

Hey guys,
Got a trip to Japan coming soon and I’m hoping it’s a chance to try & buy a pair of Adidas Japan VH boots, which were on sale only briefly in the UK and now don’t seem to be available anywhere.

They’re a couple years old, so in the gap between current & vintage. Do you think it’s the kind of thing that an outlet or factory store might sell? Are there second hand specialists for this sort of thing?

Might be that it’s not a vibe and it’s not the end of the world, but I’d hate to pass up on the chance!

Re-installed MacOS, now Macbook Air won't start up

TL;DR - Tried several steps to reset audio, finishing with a MacOS reset. Now, laptop unresponsive.

--

Hi everyone, bit of a nightmare over here, I'm hoping someone can help.

Running a MacBook Air A1466, MacOS 12.something

This afternoon, the sound stopped working. No volume control, and when I went into Sound Preferences, there were no options to select under Sound Output. Inserting a mini-jack did nothing - speakers just produced a low static but no operational change.

I did some digging, followed the following advice:

  • Resent NVRAM: successful, no change
  • Reset SMC: successful, no change
  • Run Diagnostics from boot-up. Some people experience a diagnostic result saying all fine, and the problem resolved itself on booting up again. I re-booted after an all-fine diagnostic result, no change
  • Reset coreaudiod. Tried in Terminal (typing sudo killall coreaudiod, returned "process not reognised" error) and Activity Monitor (reset by selecting & pressing X button), no change

Final option was to re-install the MacOS. I did so using MacOS Recovery, following instructions for an intel based Mac.

Re-instal seemed to progress without a problem, within the expected time frame. I returned to a dark screen and an apparently shut down computer.

When I try to turn it on, no response. Sometimes, a very faint whirr inside for a second, then nothing.

It was very hot this afternoon, and for 10-15 minutes the fan blew quite intensely. Other than that, nothing.

I've tried a power reset, by holding the power button down for 10secs then rebooting, nothing.

--

I don't know how it all deteriorated so fast! And have no idea what to do, seemingly having exhausted all my options. Any hints, tips or tricks, would be much appreciated.

P.S. Apple's support pages all seem to apply to laptops partially rebooting laptops, which boot up with error codes. This page seems to fit my needs, but none of the solutions are applicable, since I'm getting no responses
