Found this weird worm-like rock on the shore of Lake Huron

Can anyone help identify this rock? It appears to have some sort of calcified or fossilized roots/ancient plants embedded in it or something? What would cause this?

Found along Bruce Peninsula on the shore of Lake Huron in Ontario, Canada.

Anyone miss the immediacy of old games?

Something I struggle with in modern gaming and what I miss from older retro titles is the amount of time it takes from booting up the game to actually playing it.

In the 8 and 16-bit era it was pretty much instant, you maybe got a few slides of a story before you got control over your character.

With each subsequent generation it feels as though the amount of time prior to actual gameplay has increased. Modern games now frequently make the player watch a lengthy introduction movie or cutscene, or even play through an extended hours-long tutorial section before getting to the actual game.

I understand that with increased complexity in both gameplay and overall story as games have matured have led to this, but I always appreciated those games that filled me in on the story while I was playing the game itself.

I dunno, I guess I’ve just bounced off so many modern games and keep going back to retro games because of this. When I game, I want to game, not watch a movie or engage in lengthy dialogue/tutorials. Anyone else experienced this? Or is it just my modern Tik-tok attention span that is broken?

What do you think of my Xbox game collection so far?

These are the games I’ve managed to collect so far! Looking for suggestions of which games to hunt for next to fill out my collection. Lmk!

Today’s lil pickup

Rediscovered my childhood Xbox this year and have slowly been adding to my collection and playing games I could never afford when I was a kid.

Here’s today’s pickup! Can’t wait to dive in!

Work desk crt addition 🙈

Had no space for this little Toshiba 13a22 I was given in my main retro setup, so I added it to my work desk. (I’m a composer). It’s going to be very tempting not to pick up that controller all the time. 😅

Any opinions on whether I should look into getting it RGB modded? It’s an incredibly bright and colourful screen.

My lil retro setup 📺

Spent a while building out this mini retro setup in the small corner of my office where I have space and I’m pretty proud of it.

Modded Wii handles pretty much all the 8 and 16 bit consoles perfectly and they look gorgeous on my Toshiba 14af46c.

All three consoles (except Dreamcast via S-video) connected via component using a switcher.

Where can I find high quality OG Xbox component cables?

Bought this cheap $10 cable on Amazon and it only sends sound, black image. (I know, I should have known better).

Does the community have any recommendations on high quality component cables? I’m located in Canada.

Sorry if this gets asked a lot.

Picked up this re-shelled beauty for cheap - need advice!

I found this beautiful re-shelled Dreamcast with its original box and manuals for really cheap on FB marketplace in my area! As a first time Dreamcast owner I’m super pumped to dive into its library. The seller included a bunch of burned games, some of which require something called a Utopian Boot disk.

Upon researching it, it appears that this was a way to boot burned games back in the day but apparently there are more modern methods now? So I have two questions for the reddit community.

  1. I eventually plan to swap in a gdemu SD reader but in the meantime, should I burn a Utopian Boot disk? I found an image of the disk online, version 1.2. Or should I use another method like Codebreakers? Something else?

  2. Looking for recommendations on an S-video cable. I know a lot of the cheaper Chinese ones are not true S-video but I also don’t want to spend like $50 on a cable. Any recommendations that are in stock currently?

Thanks y’all!

Cyberpunk 2077 looks so good on a crt monitor

I know it’s been said many times before, but damn Cyberpunk looks incredible running on a CRT, even at a lower resolution like 1152x864.

Running on a Panasonic Panasync S70

If you have this game and a crt, highly recommend trying it.

Saved this great Panasonic Panasonic S70 from ewaste

The university chemistry department in my city was apparently dumping a bunch of them. A guy working there managed to give out a few by advertising on fb marketplace and I was lucky enough to get one!

It’s almost the monitor (though not as high end as P70) from the famous ‘Wake up Neo…’ scene in the Matrix which makes it even more appealing to me.

Great pickup day! :)

Is this worth it? 😂

This looks like an incredible pick up, but not sure it’s worth $5000 lol
