Brand New Raised Bed Arriving

I just purchased a 6ft(l)×2ft(w)x1.5ft(h) corrugated steel raised bed.

I am reading conflicting information about what to fill it with.

I originally planned to put cardboard at the bottom. Then a mix of leaves and grass clipping. However I read that uncompleted uncomposted material can pull nitrogen out of the soil above, and that is not good.

Filling it 100% with soil is going to be expensive.

Question - At the end of the season can I use the Miracle Grow Organic Potting Soil that I have in my pots to partially fill the beds? And if I can - What other type of soil should I use to "convert" the Miracle Grow Potting soil to Raised Bed Soil.

I have a small compost pile that I started and planned to use next spring to top dress this new Raised Bed.

I am ok with waiting until next March 1st to plant vegetables and spending the next 8 months filling and preparing the raised bed.

Much advice needed. This is beginning to feel way more complicated compared to my current method of gardening using pots filled with the Miracle Grow potting soil; and I am rethinking this purchase.

I purchased it with the plan to use it for beets, lettuce, carrots, and maybe cucumbers if it gets enough sun. And to not have to continue buying expensive bags of soil every year.

Searching for pictures of mature SFG gardens and info

Searching for pictures of mature gardens with info regarding what's planted and how many in each square foot.

Alot of the pictures that I have seen so far don't quite look like square foot gardening, or are not nearly mature yet.

For example I see plans posted here for 8 bush beans in one square foot. I have not seen that type of quantity and condensed. From what I am reading in this subreddit a large quantity and variety should be planted in a single square foot. What I am seeing is 1 item per s.f.

Vertical Gardening Planter

I am considering buying a less expensive vertical gardening planter off of Amazon versus the brand name version. Similar to the one in the photo.

Do you have one, or ever had one?

Do you like it?

Other than flowers, strawberries, and herbs ~ What did you grow and did it do well?

Was it easy to water?

Did all the levels drain well?

Would you buy it again?

Pros and Cons?

What else should I know?

Thank you.

Pepper Plant Defense

On May 27th I awoke to find my bell pepper plants stripped clean overnight. I highly suspect rat(s).

I used a soda bottle to protect what remained. I am pleased to report regrowth. Here are before and today pictures.

I used a bunch if sticks to put around ibe of the peppers to hopefully defend it from rodent invaders. I am not ready emotionally to take the cut soda bottle defense away.

I also bought the metal wire dollar tree trash cans to put over them. They were much shorter than I expected. Going to try to open the top with wire cutters.

Do you think my stick defense will work? Has anyone ever tried something similar with sticks? Did it work to keep rodents out?

Surgery Cost

Just an FYI - in one of her recent shorts she acknowledged her surgery was being discounted for content but contractually she could not disclose the amount she was paying. However she said it was more than $25,000 and after all her post recovery costs she would have a sizeable amount left over to put toward her 2nd surgery.

Ripe Tomatoes

Zone 10b about 4 miles from coast. Lots of moist marine layer at night.

For those whom have ripe or blushing tomatoes, when did you plant yours? It seems like mine are just forming tomatoes in the last two weeks. My sweet cherry tomato plant has barely any tomatoes and they are tiny. I bought my tomato plants and planted in late April. They look beautiful. No pests, great green foliage. I have been lightly shaking the blossoms a couple of times a week, since learning they are self pollinating.

HRT shortage

I am in So Cal. My local CVS has been out of Progesterone for at least 3 months and no end in sight. Today I just got a text from CVS saying there is a shortage of Estrogen.

I did a Google search and it says the shortage is due to the increased demand with more women taking HRT.

This doesn't sound right to me that suddenly there is a shortage. Demand has been going up for several years, not something new.

Are you having the same issue, If yes or no, where are you located?

Excessive Facial Sweating 14 years

When I entered peri-menopause about 14 years ago, I started having facial fushing where the sweat is literally pouring off of me. There were some triggers - stress, warm room, warm day, alcohol, slight exertion - and sometimes for no reason at all. Oddly not at night.

Since then it has only gotten worse. At night my head runs hot (but not sweating) while from the neck down runs cold. I have a blanket on most of my body plus socks, while a table fan is going all night on my face.

I started HRT late, about 6 years ago. While it has helped a bit with my emotions and stress, it has done nothing for the extreme facial sweating ~ so bad that I easily get very dehydrated. I carry an insulated ice water bottle wherever I go, and keep a facial towel in my car and purse. It is so bad I have not been able to wear any facial skin makeup in 12 years.

Is anyone else dealing with this problem? Has anything helped reduce the episodes or even better eliminated them?

Hrr Reddit advertising.

I came here after she mentioned people posting about her on Reddit. She gave this thread great advertising.

I have not been watching her for an extensive length of time. However in the time I have seen her posts she comes across as more and more conceited and not genuine. It is one thing to be proud and helpful regarding weight loss, but she seems gimmicky and fad driven. At first I thought her a bit funny. But now it is over done and she copies the latest social media gimmicks ~ stupid faces, gimmicky phrases, more foul language. Her saying "chefs kiss" over and over again makes me cringe and gives me reflux.

Invasive Insects Burchell Nursery and Costco

Invasive Insects found on plants sold at Costco from Burchell Nursery in Fresno. Below is the link to news article. It refers to Northern CA, however IMO a concern for everywhere. I bought a Nectarine tree from Costco in South OC on 5/23/26. The supplier was Burchell Nursery. It was on a pallet with citrus plants also. These insects not only kill grapes but citrus too.

Besides an insect problem, Burchell Nursery is shipping out of zone plants to Costco's also. When I got the Nectarine tree home, I discovered it was not appropriate for my 10b zone. I of course returned it, however I am concerned that it too may have been infected or a carrier of the insect, and could have spread to my young Meyer Lemon tree.

One lesson learned ~ in the future research the plant and growing zone while at the store.

Pepper Plants Stripped Clean

Went out this morning to find myself 2 pepper plants stripped clean overnight. Since I planted them about a week ago, every morning I had been finding soil on the cement surrounding the peppers. I have mice/rats living under the base that my AC sits on.

▪︎ Are these pepper plants destroyed or if I put chicken wire cages around them, to keep rodents out, can they grow new leaves and produce this summer?

▪︎ Also I read that in zone 10b, where I am, that pepper plants are like perennials. The same plants can produce peppers again next year. Is that true?

Upon inspecting my tomato plants I also found some bottom leaves nearer the soil stripped.

• Any suggestions on how to get mice/rats to leave?

I am very very squeamish so I am not looking to kill or trap them. I don't want to put poison out because I have a dog and also don't want them to die in my yard where the dog might find it before I do.

• I have heard that mice don't like the scent of peppermint so I am thinking of soaking cotton balls with peppermint oil and placing around my vegetables and the AC unit. Has anyone tried thus?

•Any other suggestions to keep rodents out of potted tomatoes and peppers?

Nectarines-Coastal So OC

Update - Returning the Nectarine Tree. It is a Flavortop from Burchell Nursery out of Fresno. Should not be sold in my area. Needs more chill hours than zone 10b can provide. Made a mess of my SUVfor nothing. Grrrr

Bought a 6 foot Nectarine tree at my local Costco. I live in zone 10b. Anyone have success with Nectarine trees. I have not planted yet. I have a store front size huge clay/terracotta type pot that I am thinking about putting it in. It probably will hold 67 dry gallons of potting soil, or 6 Costco size bags at 50 dry quarts each (total 300 dry quartz).

Advice needed.

Thank you.

My Bush Early Girl Tomatoes

I am in grow zone 10b about 4 miles from the coast. I bought an Indeterminite Bush Early Girl tomato plant in early April. I transplanted it into a temporary larger pot (see picture dtd 4/22) to grow taller and stronger before putting it into a pot that has 12.5 gallons of soil (see pic for soil used). When I bought the plant there were two connected leaders coming from the base of the plant. When I transplanted it on 4/22 I took off the bottom leaves (see 4/22 pic) and splayed the leaders out onto their sides for planting deeply into it's final larger pot. Within about 10 days I saw a tomato forming on each plant.

This Bush Early girl was growing well in height until recently. I am not seeing the plant grow upwards in height or bushier, as much as I would expect. Nor have the blossoms set more fruit. I fertilized with a 12-10-5 ratio about 10 days. I have been watering every 2 to 3 days until the water drains out the bottom, using a long nozzle that I am able to plunge into the soil, allowing me to keep the entire plant dry. It has been about 34 days since purchasing at a height of @ 3 to 4 inches. I have removed all the leaves under the the first blossoms with one tomato, of each leader.

As I understand, as a determinate tomato, the Bush Early girl tomatoes are supposed to all come to maturity at once, then stop producing. Is this true? Do they have another harvest after the first?

While I know it is comparing apples to oranges. I included a picture of my Parks Whopper indeterminate potted tomato plant, to show how well it is growing under the same exact conditions ~ temperature, amount of sun per day, pot size, soil used, amount of soil, two leaders in each pot, fertilizer used, when fertilized, health of plants, etc. Neither have shown any signs of pests or disease, and they look very healthy (see pics dtd 5/17).

Online it says for Bush Early Girl the full height is 3 feet, and mature fruit in 54 days after planting. In summary I am concerned that I am not going to have much produce from this plant. Is there anything I can do to help it to continue growing and produce more tomatoes?

Lastly daytime temps have generally been between 70 and 80 degrees. Nighttime high 50's to mid 60's degrees.
