There's only one reel to reel trick I'm really missing...

I have been so impressed with my workflow that it only occurred to me this morning...

NO "FLIPPING THE REELS!?" How am I supposed to record an epic backwards guitar solo??? Haha!

It would be really funny if there was a forward/backward play switch which also reversed the .PNG for the reels, lol!

Is anyone using an Akai controller? (Longshot!)

TLDR: QUESTIONS--

  1. Does controller profile recognize note offs, unlike the midi mapping?

  2. Does anyone want to check out my python script for Linux that allows you to use the Akai pads for r/s/m control in toggle mode?

  3. Is this a helpful thing to share with the community?

---

Hey just wanted to see if anyone was interested in checking out my midi mapping and wanted to give feedback before I uploaded it to the community boards. I may attempt a second draft with Controller Profiles but I have gotten so deep into this set up and have found it so useful.

Akai MPK261s have the 16 MPC pads, 8 faders/knobs with multiple banks, and midi ports A and port B. I set the transport, faders, and pads to port B so I can still use port A for virtual instruments. Bank 1 of the pads controls "record arm," Bank 2 controls "Solo" and 3 controls "mute." Bank 1 of the faders is obviously the first 8 tracks and so forth. Also knobs for panning work. I rarely use my pitch bender and so that is my scrub control. I even have the sustain pedal set up for on the fly punch ins. I barely even need to look at the screen now!

---

Now here's the rub, bub! The midi mapping only reads note ons as far as I could tell, so putting the MPC pads into toggle mode (pretty lights!) was kind of pointless. Does the controller mapping feature recognize note offs? If so there's not much point in me uploading the MIDI map and I'll start over.

Regardless, I started this before controller profile was implemented, so I found a really cool work around. I wrote a python script to turn the toggle button note off messages to "note on" and it works 99% perfect. Unfortunately, the script only works with Linux because it's interacting with ALSA MIDI. Is there anyone else here who this script might actually help? If so I've got you!

One feature I'm working on this afternoon is setting up the sustain pedal to also send note on instead of note off for on the fly punch ins. That way record is enabled while the sustain pedal is down and goes off when lifted. Might try to find a way to toggle that feature off and on depending on the case scenario.

As is I'm super happy with my setup, but trying to gauge if this is actually a useful enough thing to dial in and share with the community and try to write proper documentation for! I'd rather be working on music but I love distractions like this, ha ha!

Should I start all over again with Controller Profile? Would love some feedback.

Have you replaced a mudbucker with the Novak EB-BSx?

Seems like a huge upgrade from every YouTube video I've ever seen. I've got an Orville EB-3 I'm thinking about installing one in. It's a fujigen with pretty nice electronics so I can live with it as is but tempted to go crazy on this bass because it's so fun to play.

My big question, is if you've done this do you feel like you are MISSING ANYTHING without that big woofy sidewinder? Most of the videos I've seen are replacing Epiphone pickups so obviously it's going to sound better.

Side quest: any unique mods you've done with an EB-3 style bass? I don't see much advantage in that 4 way dial with the exception of trying to recreate classic tones that others did with this bass. I'm trieyemptedd to replace it with a 6 way or more and see what I can get away with. A proper varitone makes a lot of sense considering how much woof I can get out of this thing, so many ways to tame those bass frequencies.

Any insights would be much appreciated!

Is it possible to mail yourself in a big box?

Hello guys, I was wondering, do UPS open ALL packages before processing them?

If I wanted to mail myself to another EU country (no customs) since it's 4x cheaper than flying, would they catch Me? Is it forbidden?

I would put a lot of bubble wrap on the sides of the box, have 2 big 10L of water and many biscuits.

With the cheapest option, it's only a 3 day trip for 61€.

Linux app image question (zsync?)

Is zsync up and running yet? I'm fairly new to using app images. Seems like the cleanest option for updating when we're getting a new release every week or so. I can manage without it but I keep finding what I think are bugs and then upon further investigation the bug is on my end. I don't want to be a bother like that.

I'm still running a pre app image .deb installed via distrobox as my fallback, main install and that's smooth aside from the occasional ALSA headache/bottleneck.

"SAVE PROFILE"

So after reading the documentation I see this is what I need to keep my MIDI bindings. Where would I find that?

Is this not implemented in the Linux version yet? Did I find a bug? Or am I old and blind?

Apologies if the latter is the case. It's a distinct possibility.

There are angels among us in Eagle Rock...

I dropped my ID, credit card, and EBT probably on Yosemite a few days back while whipping my wallet open to get ready to pay the bus fare...

Just now I received an anonymous envelope in the mail with all three in there.

I know the odds are slim, but if you are reading this, please know that gesture means so much to me! I was having a really hard week and now I feel like all of that was worth it! Thank you kind stranger!

And to everyone else... I feel like I don't need to remind you that we have some REALLY COOL NEIGHBORS but it's worth repeating! I feel so blessed to dwell among y'all!!!

Thank you, all kind souls!

Mapping Feature Request:

Maybe there's a way to do this already but I haven't figured it out yet...

It would be great if we could map note on/note off messages to the arm/solo/mute buttons. That's really been the only issue I've had with an entire afternoon of setting this up and playing around. There's definitely something to be said for the simplicity of the mapping functions right now though. It took me no time to get up and running.

Another use for note on/note off functionality that I was hoping for would be to use the sustain pedal attached to my midi controller for quick punch ins. I guess that ideally would mean being able to map that as well as the transport controls to the record button.

I'm still REALLY impressed. I was going to wait until there was an app image or a flat pack to install on openSUSE but I had a free afternoon and have been meaning to learn how to use distrobox for ages so this was a REALLY fun afternoon for me. So far smooth sailing! At this juncture I'm more than 90% of the way back to my old 8 track setup that I've missed (with twice as many tracks!)

Looking forward to making more music with this software!
