NYT Subscription

Two days ago, I redownloaded Overcast (it’s disappointing that I don’t get any perks for having purchased the app in its very early days after the subscription model came along [it used to be that ads were turned off, but I didn’t get the extra premium features, but even that’s now gone], but that’s besides the point).

I connected my NYT subscription with the private feeds, but they don’t seem to auto update. Yesterday, it took multiple refreshes for the latest episode of The Daily to show up.

It took only one refresh this morning, but I would like it to auto update and send me a notification—the notification is sent once the episode shows up after I manually refreshed it.

Is there a way to fix this? Or is it the way it is with the subscription work around? Will we ever be able to connect our subscriptions to Overcast?

Thanks!

Is there a way to block websites?

Trying to block a few websites. I tried with AdGuard’s filters, and while it works with some of the simpler website, I can’t manage to block YouTube and Instagram.

Is there a free or cheap (JFC subscriptions are everywhere) app or extension I could use?

For what it’s worth I’m on macOS.

Thanks!

Flatbed brewer recommendations?

Love my Chemex but never been a fan of my ceramic V60. It’s been a while; don’t recall exactly why.

Thought I’d try a flatbed brewer.

Is the Kalita Wave still the GOAT or did someone aim at the king and did not miss? (I keep hearing about the Timemore B75—and if the B75 is the answer, which filters can I use with it? Can’t seem to find B75-specific filters.)

Cheers!

Goose neck kettle recommendations?

I’ve been out of the coffee gear game for a while now, having bought all of my gear 15 years ago and never having had an issue or reason to upgrade.

My goose neck kettle is going the way of the dodo, so I’m looking for a new one. It’s a Bonavita—what the shit, they’re now CA$159?!—and I’d buy another, but my partner wants something… “prettier.”

The only features I need are temperature set and hold buttons (it would be nice to have one where I don’t have to press between every pour).

Nothing fancy or… I want to say too expensive, but damn. I must’ve paid like $80 for that kettle.

I realize that nowadays a lot of people are into highly precise and expensive gear ($1,000+ grinders), but I really just want something simple, not too expensive and durable.

Thanks!

How do you discover new music?

I get that the other platforms’ algorithms keep you in a bubble and labels pay to have their artists featured on there, etc., but at least I was listening to music I hadn’t heard before.

On Qobuz it feels like I’m listening to the same three albums over and over again, as if it’s 1998 and I only had access to those three CDs.

I love discovering music, and I don’t much like listening to whatever I used to listen to.

Playlists like “Jazz Newcomers” haven’t been updated since February!!

The other thing is, I listen to a lot of contemporary or modern jazz, which jazz publications shun because it’s not “traditional jazz” and mainstream music publications, like Pitchfork, doesn’t really cover because it’s not all that radio friendly.

The Q playlists are cool, but inaccessible through the desktop app.

So where do you get your recommendations?

I'm done with the more ethical options

I'm all for larger artist payouts, encouraging underdogs and not giving my money to fascists who make trillions of dollars off slave labour—I'm paying for both Tidal and Qobuz—but JFC. Enough is enough.

Two days ago, I sit in front of my computer at around 8 p.m. to learn a few songs for an upcoming gig. All three! apps would not work. Tidal wouldn't play any songs. Qobuz and Qobuz Beta would not load artist, album or playlist pages. Sometimes when I clicked on "Play" or "Shuffle" it played, but I couldn't pick the song I wanted.

Around noon the following day I noticed both apps were fine. Except, I go for a drive a few hours later, put on a playlist on Qobuz, and it just stops playing. There I am, in the middle of traffic, sitting in silence as if I'm on my way to Oregon State Hospital.

"But have you tried lowering the audio quality?"

I live in one of the largest cities in North America. I have a 5G on the country's largest mobile network. Sometimes it even says 5G+, which I assume means it's even faster than 5G, which advertising already tells me is the fastest mobile network. I have an iPhone 15 Max Pro Plus Super Duper X or whatever stupid adjective they tack on to their model names nowadays with the latest version of iOS.

At home, I have a one-year old MacBook Pro with an M5 chip and 32 GB of memory running macOS Whatever Stupid National Park and a 500 Mb/s fibre connection.

I shouldn't have to lower the audio quality like I'm listening to some pre-war recording of Robert Johnson.

I tried. I really did. I've been on Qobuz since September 2025 and Tidal since April of this year.

But I'm getting shell shock from the days of loading Geocities websites on dial-up.

Anyway.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

SOTB

Ian Martin who? Don't know the guy!

... bass pedalboards are getting about as diverse as a KKK rally circa 1924, although I guess it's better on here than on Insta.

Does the desktop app ever get updated?

IIRC, I used to get updates for the desktop app. I haven't received any in a while now.

Although I assume it's a web wrapper... but like, weren't we supposed to get "Your Mixes" on the web/desktop app like... forever now?

Also, JFC this subreddit and its filtering. I can't even write everyday words without it telling me my post needs to be approved.

Overall, how is Tidal?

After 8 months on Qobuz, I’m about to call it quits. There’s always an issue, and when it’s fixed, there’s another one.

The logical move would be to go with Tidal, but I’m having second thoughts after seeing the threads on here. Then again, the Qobuz subreddit is all negative too, and I assume Spotify’s is as well. Apple Music, well, I’m sure they’re fawning over how great everything Apple is on there.

Overall, how is the Tidal experience? Can it at the very least play music without interruption?

Bright-ish strings for strung-through-body Mustang?

I have D’Addario Tapewounds on my Mustang. They’re my favourite strings, but they’re a tad too dark for my current project.

I’m looking for something a little brighter, although not stainless-steel bright, and ideally as flexible.

I was thinking DR Sunbeams?

Any suggestions?

HX Stomp's "Retro Reel" saturation in a standalone pedal?

On the HX Stomp, I really like the saturation on the "Retro Reel" model (without the modulation). Are there standalone drive pedals that have similar drive tones?

What's your favourite fuzz of 2026?

Been looking for a fuzz. I had a Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian a few years ago. It sounded amazing—creamy, warm with all the bass—except I'd get buried in the mix because of the mid-scoop. I was thinking of getting a custom-made one with the mid-flat switch but was wondering what else is out there.

What's your favourite fuzz of 2026? And what kind of music do you play?

Drive/distortion recommendations?

I dislike drive/distortion on bass, but the amount of songs my band is covering that “requires” it has reached a tipping point.

So, here we are. I’m looking for a drive or distortion pedal to play top-40 music from the 60s to today, like Wet Leg’s “Catch These Fists” and Billie Eilish’s “Lunch.”

I’d rather avoid pedals larger than the standard Boss/MXR size and digital pedals. My budget is about US$250/CA$350.

For what it’s worth:

I play short-scale basses exclusively (Fender Mustang, a six-string active bass with humbuckers and a Serek with a single coil). Pedal board is Cali76 > Micro POG > Broughton Resonant Filter Equalizer.

A bass player friend of mine who has similar tastes swears by his JAM Rattler, which is based on the ProCo RAT. The Rattler is a bit out of my price range, but the new Damnation Amp Grinder seems to fit the bill?
