Jim Cummings, Disney's legendary VA, is coming to FANEXPO Canada in August!
Sadly, I can't attend due to being from Britain. 🙁 That being said, I hope those of you who ARE from Canada and might be considering attending the expo have a good time if and when you get there. It honestly warms my heart that, despite his age, Jim still makes time for the fans of his work in the 90s and beyond. We're very lucky to still have him with us. I hope that, someday, he can make it back to the UK and visit one of our conventions again.
Voice Actor Drama and My role in it.
OK, so, but of a backstory. About 7 years ago, one of the greatest and most prolific voice actors who ever lived, possibly the absolute GOAT, got caught up in a highly messy custody battle with his Ex-Wife over their two daughters. I won't tell you the man's full name, since that'd only make things worse for the guy and would probably be breaking rules. Let's just say that the dude's surname starts with the letter C.
The point is this: During the battle, the woman decided to accuse him, not only of animal abuse but of, allegedly, "r****g" her. Obviously, this led to the unfortunate reaction of everyone on social media siding with the woman.
Thankfully, C was able to reclaim primary custody of the daughters several days later, and his legal team was able to get his name cleared with the FBI. However, a Twitter account, supposedly belonging to the Ex-Wife, continued posting insanely about how she was going to "keep fighting" to expose her ex-husband. Sick of it as I was, I decided to do what I thought was right and reported the account, eventually getting it suspended. Three years later, C reported that he had managed to get the accuser's contact rights revoked and, some time later, she was forced to pay him a 7-figure settlement for defamation.
For the longest time afterwards, everything seemed to be OK. C went back to being beloved by all, his daughters and kids from another marriage safely in the care of himself and their mother/stepmother. He managed to recover and even set up a little audio-based talk show where he would talk to other VAs about their careers and characters. All was well... until it wasn't.
Yesterday, I discovered, for reasons I can't even begin to explain, that there is a small but, sadly, growing contingent of users on X and Reddit who have unearthed the allegations against C and are trying to bring them back to the forefront. Posting articles, saying that they've "heard things", calling him a "creep", and generally trying to dispute the indisputable evidence of his innocence. This thing seems to have started about a year ago, but some of these comments here, specifically, are as young as 2 months old.
To put it simply, it caused my blood to boil, and I began to go on a defending spree of the guy, knowing full well the amount of nostalgic media that would be lost if this was allowed to continue, but also that the poor guy would lose everything and have his life and legacy wrecked if this wasn't challenged. Even so, I feel as if I've failed to make an impact and that this nonsense will just happen again at one point or another
So, I have to ask: Why? Why the hell do people feel compelled to believe something that was debunked 7 years ago? Is it because they're too young to know any better when they stumble upon those old articles and allegations? Is it because they genuinely care on account of someone they know, supposedly, going through something similar? There's no doubt that the same contingent would most likely label me any number of things for siding with the VA over his ex-wife, who would hate my guts for caring more about him than about "accountability", but the facts speak for themselves, right? The guy is innocent in the eyes of the law and the majority of people, so why do these believers insist on fighting a cause that, by all accounts, deserved to be lost? Am I the issue here?
If you think about it, all the Cartoonified Guests were technically kidnapped. :P
Am I the only one who sees it? :/
