Metro World Cup readiness presentation shows TAP PLUS officially goes live week of 5/25

Page 7 & 15 of 2026 FIFA WORLD CUP READINESS UPDATE

WCGETS = World Cup Games Enhanced Transit Service

Since World Cup starts on 6/11 and summer starts in 6/21, if Metro is able to start TAP PLUS by then, then they did manage to do it by "spring 2026" barely. lol

Page 15 also notes Metro admitting week of 5/18 was soft launch of open payment, week of May 25 is go live week for open payments; so likely more news about TAP PLUS next week

Seems like Android users still has to rely on the propietary TAP app and no ability to add TAP to Google Wallet yet; though probably a credit/debit card on Google Wallet would work

TAP PLUS on agencies with different fares between cash and TAP?

Has anyone tried out using TAP PLUS (direct debit/credit card payment) on systems that charge different fare rates between cash and TAP and which one gets deducted?

Off the top of my head, these are SMBBB, LADOT DASH, and Angel's Flight

  • SMBBB $1.25 when paid with TAP vs $1.50 when paid in cash
  • DASH $0.35 when paid with TAP vs $0.50 when paid in cash
  • Angel's Flight: $0.75 when paid with TAP vs $1.50 when paid in cash
  • Any others?

LA Fleet Week $2 off admission by showing TAP card

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Take the Metro J Line south to San Pedro and get off at the Beacon/1st St stop one block away from Battleship IOWA. Save $2 on regular price admission at the ticket booth when you show your valid TAP card at the museum entrance.

Confirmed TAP PLUS is live (Expo/Sepulveda)

Just used my Citibank Mastercard to go through the turnstile at Expo/Sepulveda and confirmed TAP PLUS is live here. Immediately shows up online as Metro Paygo

Edit For u/metrolosangeles as a field test report (TAP PLUS soft launch testing phase? 5/19/2026):

Expo/Sepulveda to Expo/Crenshaw (E Line eastbound) - read credit card properly, deducted $1.75

Expo/Crenshaw to LAX/MTC (K Line southbound) - read credit card, Metro-to-Metro transfer worked properly, and did not deduct additional fare for transfer

LAX/MTC to Expo/Sepulveda (Culver City Bus 6 northbound) - read credit card, Metro-to-Muni transfer worked properly, and deducted $0.40 transfer fare

Expo/Sepulveda to DTSM (E Line westbound) - read credit card properly, deducted $1.75, TAP at Expo/Sepulveda. Used north exit at DTSM, did TAP to Exit at a green light LCD turnstile, read card and unlocked turnstile. Waited 7-8 minutes for return trip to avoid passback (don't know if that's built in or not)

DTSM to Expo/Sepulveda (E Line eastbound) - used north entrance, right side turnstile was blocked, middle turnstile was showing error message on entrance side (this is the same turnstile used for exiting; exit side was working properly but with green LCD), used the open fan-style ADA gate which was blue LCD, but didn't seem to read credit card. Ended up just going through the gates regardless as fan style ADA was open.

Comments/suggestions: Overall seems to be working at all gates and TAP readers that are blue LCD, the green LCD at DTSM seems to have worked on exit side as TAP to Exit, entry side didn't work at the ADA gate even though it was blue LCD. Showed up on my credit card account online pretty much immediately, faster than TAP transactions showing up on the TAP app which could take about 10-15 mins to show up. OTOH, online credit card transaction just shows LA METRO- PAYGO Los Angeles USA which isn't much helpful in knowing where you got on, which is a feature that I like on TAP card's history which shows which Metro station you entered or which transit agency you used for buses. Would be great it showed more detailed info like that.

Ride GTrans to the World Cup seems to hint TAP PLUS activation by then

GTrans has an updated page today that you can use their Line 7X from Harbor Gateway to SoFi Stadium during World Cup matches, and it seems to hint that TAP PLUS (open payments) will be available by then as it lists payment is accepted using contactless credit cards with no setup required.

How to Pay:

  • Contactless credit card — Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and UnionPay are all accepted. No setup required.
  • Use a TAP card — available as a physical card, in Apple Wallet on iPhone, or via the TAP app on iPhone and Android. Pro-tip: Load return fare onto your TAP card ahead of time to avoid delays.

It's almost 2 years since we started TAP to Exit at NoHo (started 5/28/2024)

Going back to historical articles, time seems to fly by really quick that we're almost approaching 2 years since TAP to Exit got first started at NoHo on 5/28/2024.

Granted there was that brief pause of the program last year due to the BS bureaucracy with LAFD, but despite all the whining and complaints that it's not going to work back then, it seems the program is working as intended. And since then NoHo has went from removing the older turnstiles to installing the new faregates, as well as the program being expanded to LAUS (B/D Lines), DTSM, Pomona North and now Wilshire/La Cienega.

OTOH, while the initial plans called for expanding TAP to Exit starting at all end of line stations, they're still not active at end of line stations such as Atlantic, Redondo or Norwalk, and I doubt DTLB will ever be done due to the station design. Maybe there will be more about this next month as recent Metro Service Council meetings has said they're going to give a report on the effectiveness of TAP to Exit and the new faregates in the June Metro Board meeting.

Are there hiccups like people misusing the ESGs when security isn't looking? Definitely, but overall the security and safety seems to been a net positive. The only thing holding back at this point is the LAFD bureaucracy where if that issue is resolved, they can remove the ESGs altogether and just go with the new faregates being the emergency exits themselves; whenever that maybe.

TAP Card new contract $54 million for a 5 year IDIQ contract seems too much IMO especially with TAP PLUS to be rolled out ?

TAP FARE MEDIA MANUFACTURING AND FULFILLMENT SERVICES

I understand the need of a new contract for TAP cards, but with TAP PLUS going live soon, do we really need a IDIQ (indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity) contract? While the presentation says TAP has issued 45 million cards since 2006, with TAP PLUS, the need for issuing TAP cards will become lower, so they should come up with a fixed number for this and lower the contract amount. The new Cathay Pacific sponsorship at LAX/MTC is only going to bring in $10 million for 5 years so this TAP contract alone only covers less than 1/5th of this.

IMO Metro should at least halve this amount and use redirect the money to much more needed bus stop and rail station upgrades

SDMTS cites LA Metro's proven results with faregates to consider installing faregates on their system

Looks like LA is becoming an inspiration for other transit systems like SDMTS to make them consider installing faregates on their system too?

>Several other transit systems in America are installing or improving fare gates on their systems to address both fare evasion and safety and security on trains, with revenue-generating results.

>Los Angeles Metro began installing fare gates at 28 high volume stations in March 2025 at a cost of about $15 million. The agency started with Firestone and Lake stations on its A Line and the initial report last April found that there was a 107% and 248% increase respectively in paid entries at those stations, and a 75% decrease in reported security incidents.

>As of February this year, 22 Los Angeles stations have been fitted with improved fare gates and “incidents related to security concerns, vandalism/graffiti, and cleanliness declined by 69% at stations with new gates,” according to Los Angeles Metro.

Official Metro post Wilshire/La Cienega is now TAP to Exit

I know there was a post about it 3 days ago that there were signs there, but Metro officially announces that Wilshire/La Cienega is TAP to Exit.

One question to u/metrolosangeles, is this temporary or permanent? Because so far, Metro officially has said TAP to Exit will be only at end of line stations, but Wilshire/La Cienega being the west terminus is only until Century City station opens in Phase 2 and Westwood/VA Hospital opens in Phase 3.

Will they "push back" TAP to Exit to Century City when Phase 2 opens and to Westwood/VA Hospital when Phase 3 opens, or will TAP to Exit remain at Wilshire/La Cienega, introducing TAP to Exit becoming the norm even in stations en route? That's probably a question to be asked.

Metro finally updated stations with EV charging map (as of May 2026)

Metro finally updated their map with stations that have EV chargers. The previous map that was online was so old it didn't even have the Regional Connector, K Line, or the new A Line North stations, or list stations like Willowbrook/Rosa Parks and Canoga having EV chargers.

One thing that isn't noted here is while most Metro stations' EV chargers are provided by EVGateway, some of the A Line North stations have Chargepoint chargers.

BART’s new fare gates (same gates LA Metro is using) will soon snap shut faster than they have been closing. Will this adjustment finally stop piggybacking?

Again, the faregates BART is using is the same that LA Metro has been installing, so what they're doing could also be done here.

They're tweaking the AI sensor features so that the doors shut 300 ms faster, hoping that'll deter even more piggybacking fare evaders. To be rolled out across BART's system on 5/18.
