The competitive environment is ruining East Bay schools and it's negatively impacting our kids and community (Rant)

First of all, this is a complete rant I wanted to get off my chest and didn't know where else to vent. I'm also interested to hear other opinions and perspectives.

To provide some context to this rant; I grew up here (40+ yrs) and went to school in the East Bay area. I have had kids in PUSD for 12 years and my wife has been a teacher at a few East Bay schools.

I have seen a significant change in the schools and not necessarily for the best, at least with regard to overall student happiness and mental health. On paper the schools look great. We have very high performing students with respect to test scores and college acceptance rates but my personal opinion is, all of this comes at a cost to students mental health and negatively impacts our community as a whole.

Being an average student is looked down on. If a kid isn't taking a majority AP classes they risk being labeled as "dumb" and often made fun of for not taking advanced classes. Dublin Unified recently limited the number of AP classes to help reduce student stress and parents flipped out. Very tragically and sadly, DUSD has had a few teen suicides that helped initiate some of the changes. The pressure also impacts students who need extra help due to learning disabilities or other factors. I have personally seen kids that require extra help either not take classes that offer assistance or get made fun of for taking them. Help is often avoided because they don't want to be label as the "dumb kid". I know this has always been a thing but it is magnified 100x due to the environment we're in. Being average in math has been a particular struggle for our kids. Because so many students in the area take additional math classes after school, average or even above average kids feel "dumb". My kids have always been above the state and national average and have all felt "dumb" when it comes to math. Because the majority of students are high performing, those that require extra help become an inconvenience and end up falling behind and eventually slip through the cracks. I know of kids in middle school that have a hard time reading but are offered no help or assistance from the school despite failing basically every subject.

School sports and non-academic after school activities are dwindling in part because many kids are in tutoring or some academic focused activity after school and on weekends. It saddens me to see a line of parents and kids out the door at some of these tutoring places on the weekend. IMHO, school (and homework time) is for learning and anything outside of that is to build social skills and play. Social skills are arguably just as important as doing well in school and I think many kids are missing out on learning how to appropriately socialize during a critical time of their development. Sure, they can do advanced match but they have no creativity or critical thinking and have a difficult time working with their peers. The result, with respect to the workforce, are book-smart employees that no one wants to work with because they lack social and interpersonal skills.

The parent pressure has significantly impacted how schools handle and react to students that need extra assistance. Schools cater to their constituents, parents. The result is an imbalance between the districts educational mission and the loudest parents in the room. I see WAY more effort and money spent on building top-notch facilities and programs of interest to the community while mental health and other student services are cut. As an example, I recently learned PUSD has one behaviorist for the district of 13,000 students because they recently cut additional Special Education behavior program managers to save about $2M. Meanwhile literally hundreds of millions are being spent on new facilities and science programs while teacher pay and student services have been cut year after year. The pressure parents are putting on the schools and the students is out of control. The pressure parents place on their kids to get into college alone is absolutely insane to me! Families paying up to $60k on a college application coach is an absolute joke.

I work in tech and I have seen this change in the workplace as well. For example, during a conversation with my manager, I proudly told them that my high school child wants to teach special education or work with developmentally disabled individuals. Their response was a chuckle followed by "I don't know what I would do if my kid wanted to do something like that! I hope your kid can marry someone rich. Or hopefully you can steer them toward something else before they graduate." Of course I am encouraging my child to pursue what she loves.

Honestly, I'm completely exhausted with some of the changes I have seen in this area. I love so much about the East Bay but the hustle culture and competitive environment is causing a lot of sourness and community disfunction.

Ok, end of my rant. I'm curious if it's just me? Am I overreacting? Has it always been like this and I'm just now noticing? Or, are others that have been here for a while and noticed a similar change?

Just got the Schmilco album on a whim and beyond blew me away!

I have always loved Wilco songs when I heard them but never owned an album end to end. I told myself next time I stumbled on an album I would get it. I stumbled on this one today and Holy shit this album is absolutely amazing! It is truly beautifully executed as well. I’m on my third listen through on day one and just really listened to the baseline on Nope, so beautiful.

I feel like an idiot for not listening to one of their albums in its entirety earlier. I look forward to listening to more of this.

TJs pizza dough with pepperoni, sausage and mozzarella

I make pizza every Friday and have found TJs dough to be really good if treated right.

Here is my method:
- divide bag of dough into 4 smooth balls
- cover and refrigerate the dough balls for about 24hrs
- spread the dough from the center out, do NOT roll the dough otherwise you’ll lose the air bubbles that make a nice airy crust.
There are plenty of YT videos for how to form or stretch pizza dough.
- go light on the tomato sauce. I use the canned San marzano or marzanino tomatoes and blend them. You can also just crush them with your hands if you like chunky sauce.

I cook in a very hot pizza oven (500-600) for a couple minutes.

What else should I add to The Innernette?

I recently got shit-canned at work and need something to do other than looking for a new gig. I’m looking for ideas and suggestions for what else to add to The Innernette. Also, if anyone needs a product manager I know a guy.

Save your tokens by vibe coding like a Technical Product Manager

I am honestly baffled by how many posts I see about running out of tokens or spending a boat load of money to build a relatively simple app. I have been building full-stack apps/SaaS prototypes on my $20 a month subscription and have never come close to going over my token limit.

I have been a technical product manager for about 20 years and have been "vibe coding" at some capacity since 2022-ish. I wrote up my general process that I thought might help other vibe coders better understand the technical aspects of vibe coding and save yourself tokens.

It's a bit long but if you're not technical, this might help you learn some of the basics and start learning what's actually happening under the hood but most importantly, it could save you a shit ton of tokens as you build.

Full transparency, I posted this on my own open sourced Lemmy instance, VibeCodeCollab. It's a Lemmy community instance I started for myself and a couple other vibe coders. I'm keeping it small and focused on actual helpful content rather than getting a bunch of ppl promoting their app/saas. Not a promotion, I'm not selling ads on this platform. In fact, I'm losing money hosting the instance lol.

Signed 88 Eck

My son and I went to the Reggie Jackson softball game and home run derby last year. He yelled out to Eck to get a card signed and one of the guys working security brought it over to him. He didn’t look happy when the guy brought it over and he asked who it was for. The security guy pointed over to my 9 y/o son, he smiled, happily signed it and waved at him. Made my kids day!

First time growing from seed - Any tips?

Last year I plucked this little lady out of the ground in my yard. It’s from our Japanese maple that I absolutely love. Thought it would be nice to have a bonsai version.

I stared it in a small pot after taking it out of the ground and then transplanted to a pond pot with a 2:1:1 of akadama, pumice and lava rock. I added a handful of some orchid mix I had as well for a bit more organics.

My current plan is to let her chill mostly as-is until next year but looking for any tips or suggestions to give her the best start to a long life.

Laid off today and this is my anti-celebration beer

I got shit canned today and decided to crack open my 2014 Old Stock Ale to help drown my sorrows. Also, anyone looking for a product manager? Cheers!

I’m on a mission to make the perfect pizza, at least for my family. This is round 1. Trying to get the perfect Neapolitan style crust.

Every Friday our family has pizza and a movie night. Up to now we have been ordering delivery and after doing a little math and noticed we spend about $3000 a year on pizza!! WTF! It actually made financial sense to get my own pizza oven and start making at home. The pizza is worlds better and WAY cheaper, especially when buying stuff in bulk.

I grew up in an Italian family and learned how to make dough. IDK if this is right but it’s how I learned. I used Italian Reginella 00 flour and just ordered some Caputo to compare.

- 56% hydration
- 48hr room temp ferment
- 72hr cold ferment
- Cooked on wood fired 12” Ooni at ~375C (~700F)

Actual measurements:
- 640g flour
- 360g water
- 14g salt
- ~0.75g instant dry yeast

How I make my dough:
Mix water, salt and a small handful of flour so the water looks like milk. Sprinkle dry yeast on top, cover and let sit for 30min-1hr.
Mix flour and kneed for about 5 minutes. I just go until I feel it sorta soften up and smooths out.
Put a wet cloth over the bowl and let it sit for another hour or two. My mom swore this step is important. Cover with plastic wrap and let sit for 24-48hrs.
Cut into four balls and cover with plastic wrap. Cold ferment for 48-72hrs.

Is it just me or is it oddly terrifying that the chicks seemed like they were going too crazy piling up? Like it's a matter of life and death for them.

I knew Tim was doing some good for the Sandy Hook families for all the shit Alex Jones put them through. But it’s so amazing to see HOW MUCH support they are giving back to those families. If you want to join me in saying fuck you to AJ, help support this project!

Good Job!
