My spinning wheel does wheel things and TURNS. What am I doing wrong?

I’m a brand new spinner and my wheels turns. Sometimes it turns one way, but then, it turns the OTHER way. I must be doing something wrong. Shouldn’t it only go one way? Please help me change physics and simple machines.

Trying to find my community: are you a handspinner too??

I (40f) just moved here this week from a place with a huge spinning and weaving community. I was lucky enough to be part of 3 guilds and many community meetups and spin-ins. I know it’s not as big here, but if anyone here spins I would love to meet up! I have a travel wheel and quite a few spindles so I’m happy to come to you!

If you see me walking around and spinning come up and say hi!

(Yes I know about the Textile Guild but I can assure you that a meeting at 9am on Tuesdays at the senior center is not the demographic I’m looking for even if I was available)

Moving and missing my community already. Anyone in Santa Cruz?

I currently live in a large metropolitan area in the Midwest. It’s glorious being in a place that still has an active and vibrant fiber arts community! I was able to attend 4 different spinning groups, and had access so multiple fiber festivals throughout the year that are all top dollar!

I’m moving this week. My wheels are packed up and my fiber is all in boxes. It’s so sad and bland around here and it’s really hitting me right now.

I hope I’m able to find some fabulous fibery people out there. If you spin out there let me know! If you want to learn how to spin let me know!

Claiming home office space for taxes

Looking at the tax laws, we can claim part of our home for home office use as I’m an entirely WFH contractor, we are moving to a new home in CA and wanted to seek some clarification.

Does anyone know if the entire room needs to be a solely dedicated office to qualify? The home isn’t big enough to have its own separate office. Can I claim the square footage or does it need to be a dedicated separate room?

I watched some videos. Can you tell me before I buy anything if I can spin?

I love watching spinning videos and want to make thread. Before I spend any money, will you be able to tell me if this is a hobby I will be able to do? Context? No. Just answer the question. Will I be able to spin cobweb weight threads if I buy a spindle off Amazon tonight?

My personal TdF challenge: spinning in silence l

Whenever I’m spinning, I will not seek out forms of media. Embracing silence is hard but it’s getting easier. I hope my attention span is improving slightly each time.

Ponchos are criminally underrated

They are perfect lightweight covers for when the sun goes down. This is The Stone Point Poncho written for Kelbourne Woolens

Hey Audrey: They weren’t resisting and they still died.

Good and Pretti weren’t resisting.

And even if they were: People with 45 days of training don’t get to play judge jury and executioner in this country. Ever.

Tip for making drying skeins easier in small living spaces: get a shower rod!

I have an expanding shower curtain rod and it’s been great for both hanging skeins to dry and for helping to process fleece. I can hang it in the middle of my shower stall above my head so anything wet can drip into the drain from there. I have also put it over my washing machine when things needed to hang but weren’t dripping wet and I needed it out of the way.

I hung my herb drying rack with fleece inside the door frame of my bedroom with a fan on it. I could just lift it up if I needed to go in and out. It was helpful to put it in a place inside with good airflow.

I find that the shower rod is sturdier than curtain rods and have rubber feet that really grip but don’t damage the walls. When I don’t need it, it just goes next to my washer in the small space there.

Low cost, movable, sturdy!

Attending spouses: where do you buy your good shoes?

Goodbye pleather. I want some well made nice sandals and flats that are cute but have good arch and heel support. Now that we can finally live above the “Sam Vimes” boot purchases, I’m looking forward to getting shoes that I feel good about and good in.

To rewind or not to rewind my cotton bobbins…

Shooting for a 3 ply with lace weight singles. I always rewind my wool singles to help even out the energy and get rid of any pigtails that come up.

I’m so nervous that if I do it with cotton, it’s going to make the singles *too* loose and they will fall apart when I ply. But they are definitely overspun in a lot of places since I spin it very fast on my espinner and don’t slow down when I’m attaching a new section of fiber.

Hrmmmm. Thoughts? Experiences?

Surprised my neighbors haven’t called the cops on me yet…

This looks suspicious AF right? Icelandic fleece!

Welcome to the Unhinged Tour de Fleece post

I am moving cross country in a month. I have 7 fleeces in my garage that I at least need to clean up and see what’s actually viable. Clean fleece can at least be used as packing material. That’s my current rationale

I want to get through at least 1.5k of fiber spun up. Is this insane?

Absolutely.

Let’s pack up a house and move to a new state where we don’t actually have a place to live yet. We need to fly out next week to look for a place too.

This is fine. Everything is fine.

Anyone moving to Chicago, specifically the West Side for Rush or Loyola? Want a residency plant?

When we first moved here, a medspouse left their baby monstera for someone to take as they were moving after graduation. Four years later, she’s not a little baby anymore and definitely can’t make the move with us.

I was thinking of taking a small branch for me and keeping the tradition of passing it along to someone new and looking to make their own roots in this area.

If you’re nearby and want her over the next few weeks let me know!

Is this actually an Ashford?

Not looking to buy, but my husband asked if this was a good deal for an Ashford. It’s listed as one, but I don’t think it is? I couldn’t find it on their timeline chart with that style mother of all and wheel spokes.

Officially running off with my tru love: tweed. Tell my family I love them

I am having soooo much fun spinning this up. that being said it’s so much fun because this is so incredibly well prepped. This is a 60% wool/ 40% sari silk braid prepped by Keira Wiggins. She blended this sooo well that the sari silk slubs are fun and I don’t have to fight it at all!!
