Doll believes that people don't change and that evil must be killed, whereas Thad believes that people need to be punished but can change if they want to.
Doll wants to break Thad to prove to him that his ideology is fragile, but the more he pushes forward, the more she admires him; in the end, she realizes she loves him—he holds her heart, so he is the one who must make it stop beating.
