Dissertation detritus! 🚮

I've already consigned all my marked-up drafts to the recycling bin, but I find myself with a sizeable amount of notebooks and writing pads - a tangible reminder of the effort that went into writing the dissertation! What did you do with your research notes? Keep them as a keepsake? Junk it all after the defence? I thought I'd never have this problem after my school leaving examinations ended more than a decade ago 😆

Discipline: Literature (and the books are another problem!!)

Names that you think sound better in other languages

Anastasia and Geneviève are often mentioned on this sub as sounding better in their original languages than in English.

Irene is Greek in origin, but I also like its Spanish pronunciation much more than the English one.

Some names hit different when they're anglicised, especially when they lose tones, glottal stops, or phonemes that don't correspond well to English sounds. I think Ngọc is lovely, but not if it's said like "knock"!

What names do you prefer in one language over another?

Coping with moving

I've lived on my own - including in other countries - but I'm still getting butterflies in my stomach at the idea of officially 离开娘家 or leaving my parents' home. Has anyone else felt that way? How did you adjust to the move?

What are some names that you like but are afraid to use?

Whether because of general disapproval from those around you, unfortunate associations, inconvenient or incorrect assumptions and/or the risk of mispronunciation or misspelling.

Some examples for me: Mercedes, Soraya, Citlali

If your culture gives cash gifts to wedding attendants...

...how much did you give to each member of the wedding party and/or your younger siblings? And when did you pass the envelopes over - after the ceremony or after the reception?

When are you moving into a new place together?

For those who are setting up a new household upon marriage, when did you actually start living in the new home? A week in advance? A month? Did that affect timeline logistics for any getting-ready customs? Moving in right after the ceremony seems like it would be extra emotional energy on a busy day.

Many Greek and Roman names from antiquity are still knocking around today, as are names from other mythologies like Freya.

Similarly, I was browsing a list of Ancient Egyptian names and wondering which might have modern appeal – especially those with elements like *ankh* (life), *mer* (love) or *nefer* (beauty).

Some favourites I came across:

  • Khufu ‐ "[creator god Khnum] protects me"
  • Iset - "throne" (Hellenised as Isis)
  • Menes - from Manij, "he who endures)
  • Meresankh - "she loves life"
  • Nefermaat ‐ "Maat (Justice) is beautiful"
  • Nitocris - from Nitiqret, "[mother goddess] Neit(h) is great"
  • Tausret - "powerful woman"
