What do you do once your periods come back?

I got my period back this morning. I'd stopped a lot of activity, been eating more and more regularly so I guess I will keep that up. Is there anything else I need to do to make sure I don't lose it again? What tends to happen once you get them back?

Liver damage caused by monster energy drinks

Hi all,

This is a warning to anyone who is drinking monster drinks regularly.

Hepatitis and liver damage can be like a silent problem. You don't know anything's wrong until it escalates to jaundice and cirrhrosis. Before then, it can only be recognised through tests.

Recently, my fingernails had turned an opague white (terry's nails, associated with liver dysfunction); I was incredibly tired, sometimes too tired to even watch a film at the end of the day and barely had an appetite.

I had a general blood test (FBC) which flagged abnormal enzyme levels associated with hepatitis. For this reason, I had further tests done for hepatitis and more in-depth tests on my liver.

I got the results back today and it's really bad. I tested negative for viral hepatitis but there is clearly a serious problem. I don't drink alcohol; take any medication or do any drugs. I also don't take any herbal supplements, some of which can also cause the liver significant stress.

However, I have been drinking monster drinks nearly every day for a long time, sometimes 2 a day, sometimes more than 2 a day. I have become more tolerant to caffeine so I need to drink more energy drinks to get the same effect.

Monster drinks are packed with ginseng; taurine and niacine (niacine being particularly bad for the liver) plus other vitamins and supplements. These are all really difficult for the liver to break down, especially all combined. Monster drinks contain higher than recommended levels of a lot of these vitamins. This can lead to a toxic build-up in the liver causing acute hepatitis.

All of this is a well-studied phenomenom that I was unaware of until now. After wracking my brains trying to figure out why I had liver damage so badly, it seems likely that monster drinks are the culprit.

My advice is to be careful, especially if drinking energy drinks on top of other activities that may damage the liver such as sugar or alcohol consumption.

How long to hear back from a consultant about a complex case?

Hi all,

I'm not entirely sure what is wrong with my nose but there was a major trauma and subsequent infection and there is a lot of scar tissue, stenosis making it difficult to breathe, a septal perforation and from the looks of things, it's a bit wonky as well. There are also pronounced dents either side of my nose. It went from a normal nose to this in a very short space of time.

It is so bad my GP and consultant have asked if I do cocaine and I have had to do a load of tests for a specific form of a rare autoimmune condition called vasculitis that causes problems with the kidneys, and the airways such as the lungs and nose.

Obviously, this is very complex. It could require multiple surgeries or one incredibly convoluted surgery. It is guaranteed that they will want me to wait at least three months but most likely at least six until the scar tissue matures and inflammation settles down.

I spoke with a consultant just over a week ago and after he told me that I would have to wait six months before he felt confident operating; I told him that I did not want treatment from him. After some reflection though, a few hours later, I sent an email to him, taking this back, because I realised it was much better to be safe and he must have good reasons.

I have not heard back in over a week but I don't think he is ignoring me or has forgotten about me, and I don't think he is just ruminating about this either. I think that, because he couldn't seem to guarantee much in the consultation as he only said 'at least six months' but used phrases like 'I cannot guarantee you' and he did not give much detail about the next steps, he might be making enquiries or something. I don't know, but I think he might want a second opinion or more information or something before he gets back to me.

Does anyone on this subreddit know what is likely going on? Obviously, it is really bugging me. Even if you don't know what is going on, please could you upvote this just to increase the chances that an expert sees this. Thanks

How bad is youth unemployment in the UK?

I only have a small view of this issue. I am young myself and finding a secure, full-time job that ticked all the boxes for me was a long process, about 3-6 months, that involved plenty of rejections. Others' experiences also often involve a lot of perseverence and setbacks. At uni, graduate schemes were like gold dust. Some people are completely out of work, say that they continuously look but cannot find a job, and it is hard to tell then if they are actually serious.

However, finding a job is supposed to be hard. It's always been known to be a numbers game. It's always been the case that unless you get lucky, you have to start low down and work your way up.

Based on this then, it is hard to gauge if there is actually a crisis here or if it is being overly inflated by the media. Should I actually be concerned? What are other people's experiences?

Have some questions less than 1 week before my initial consultation

Hi all,

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this so please let me know if there is a more relevant subreddit.

I cannot make sense of what I am going through but am fairly confident that I need plastic surgery.

My nose has a pinched appearance; my nostrils are more like crescents than circles and are pushed in and I have to literally hold or prop my nostrils open to feel like I can breathe normally. There are grooves either side pf my nose from where each side of my nose has bent inwards, particularly pronounced on one side so it looks almost like one side is cut. I feel like my nose has been sown inwards or something because each side is pressed down for some reason.

Furthermore, there is a fairly big perforation in the middle of my septum, which I noticed when trying to open my nose wider with s cue tip and I realised it went straight through easily.

What caused this? I don't really know. I already knew that I had weak nasal cartillage because of historic substance abuse (as in ancient history because I'm pretty good these days) and also previously knew about a small perforation in my septum because it had been identified by a doctor years ago but it wasn't big enough to require any treatment.

Recently, I took a bad knock to the nose but this didn't break any bones or cause anything that will leave a scar, though it was still bad.

My nose collapse happened shortly after.

I'm seeing a consultant as early as I can, start of next week, and figure I need nasal valve surgery and the perforation to be filled in, but don't know what to expect because I don't even know what's happened.

Can anyone on this forum give me more insight into this situation and what's going to happen now? Any help would be appreciated - if anyone has had or treated nasal valve collapse and knows more about what's caused and what I can expect from treatment. Thanks in advance

I started pushing my body with restrictive eating too much. I now get tired more easily and haven't had a period since February. I want to bring my weight up again to a point where my body can do more functions.

I did some research and apparently it's called hypothalamic amenhorrea. If it goes on too long, it can cause permanent infertility. It can also cause uterine atrophy. It is also apparently slow to reverse.

Has anyone had experience with this? Did you manage to treat it? How long did it take for your period to come back? It feels like some days I've been eating normally but that still hasn't been enough. Thanks in advance for any advice.
