The Night I Didn't Understand

The Night I Didn't Understand

Not every fear comes from ghosts.

Sometimes, it comes from not understanding what you're looking at.

I was about six or seven years old when my mother took my brother and me to visit a relative. You could call him my uncle, although he wasn't my actual maternal uncle.

It was the monsoon season.

The moment I stepped inside the house, I noticed a strange smell. It reminded me of clothes that had been left damp for too long without being properly dried. The whole house smelled of moisture and damp walls.

There was something about the place that felt strange to me.

The walls were damp. The air felt heavy. Even the rooms looked unfamiliar in a way I couldn't explain.

Still, I was a child. I didn't have much choice.

I somehow got through the day.

Then came the night.

My brother and I were given a room to sleep in. We slept on the floor while my uncle slept on the bed above us.

There was just one thing I didn't know.

My uncle had a habit of sleepwalking.

At six years old, I had no idea what sleepwalking even was.

That night, I struggled to fall asleep. I kept turning from one side to the other, trying to get comfortable. Eventually, after what felt like forever, I finally fell asleep.

I don't know how much time had passed when something woke me up.

My uncle had gotten out of bed.

And then he stepped directly onto my heel.

An adult weighing around 85 kilos had just stepped on a six-year-old kid's foot.

Naturally, I woke up terrified.

But what I saw next scared me even more.

My uncle was walking.

Except something was wrong.

His eyes looked strange. He wasn't walking normally. He moved toward the wall and bumped into it.

Then he turned around.

He walked toward the door and bumped into that too.

Sometimes he would simply stop in the middle of the room, standing completely still.

I had absolutely no idea what was happening.

To me, this wasn't a person who was asleep.

This was something I couldn't understand.

I immediately tried waking my brother.

I shook him.

Nothing.

He was sleeping deeply, completely unaware of what was happening beside him.

Then my uncle started walking toward me.

My fear suddenly became panic.

I moved back and tried waking my brother again, but he wouldn't wake up.

My uncle kept coming closer.

I didn't know what else to do.

So I screamed the only thing that came to my mind.

"Mummy!"

My mother woke up.

At that exact moment, my uncle's eyes opened.

He seemed to suddenly realize where he was.

Then he lost his balance and fell down.

I didn't wait to understand what had happened.

I ran straight to my mother's room and slept beside her for the rest of the night.

The next morning, I learned what had actually happened.

My uncle had been sleepwalking.

There had been no ghost.

No spirit.

No monster.

Just a sleeping man walking around a damp, unfamiliar house.

But I was six years old.

And when you are six, you don't need a ghost to be terrified.

Sometimes, not understanding is scary enough.

BHRAM

**Bhram**

The boy climbed the stairs to his room, shoulders sagging under the weight of the day. He was tired — not from the work, but from something deeper.

At the door, he rang the bell. Once. Twice. No answer. Then his eyes drifted down, and he saw it — a lock hanging from the latch. No one was home. No one had ever really been home.

Something inside him broke. He slammed his fist against the door before pushing it open and stepping inside. He dropped his bag on the floor and sank down against the wall, alone in the dark.

That's when he heard her voice.

*"Don't show me your face after today,"* it said. *"Get out of here. Go!"*

He began to cry — loudly, helplessly — the kind of crying a person does when they have nothing left to hold onto. And then, without warning, the lights snapped on. The room flooded with brightness, and he fell silent instantly, as if caught.

He stood, wiped his face, and went looking for a candle. He checked one cupboard, then another. Crossing the room, his foot caught on the strap of his bag, and he fell hard, cutting his mouth on the floor. He got up anyway, found the candle, and lit it with a trembling hand.

The small flame pushed back the darkness — just enough to reveal a snake.

He had always been afraid of snakes. His whole body began to shake. The snake moved toward him, and he stumbled backward, his foot catching the same bag again. He fell a second time. By the time he looked up, the snake was right beside him, its hood spread wide.

He closed his eyes and made peace with dying.

Then the light returned.

He opened his eyes and searched the room frantically for the snake. It was nowhere. In its place, lying beside him on the floor, was only a rope.

**THE END**
