Suresh Prabhu has done one right thing :

I was recently reading about the Antyodaya Express trains, and honestly, it’s one of the most underrated initiatives the Indian Railways has pulled off for the common man.

For context, Suresh Prabhu introduced these back in the 2016-17 Railway Budget, and the first one started running in early 2017 between Ernakulam and Howrah.

Here is why they are a massive deal for regular commuters and why we need more of them:

  • Dignity for the Poor: Historically, unreserved travel meant absolute misery in old, cramped ICF coaches. Antyodaya changed that by offering modern, fully unreserved LHB coaches with bio-toilets, mobile charging points, water purifiers, and cushioned luggage racks at standard general ticket pricing.
  • Targeting High-Density Migrant Routes: These trains specifically run on heavy migrant corridors (like Bihar/UP to Mumbai, Surat, or Kerala). It gives low-income daily wagers and laborers a fast, affordable option without forcing them to compromise on basic human comfort.
  • Fixing the "Sleeper Class Spillage": Anyone who travels Sleeper Class (SL) knows the nightmare of waitlisted general passengers crowding the bays and aisles. By running dedicated, superfast Antyodaya trains on the exact same routes, it naturally absorbs that massive chunk of unreserved crowd.
  • Relief for 3AC Passengers: With Sleeper Class becoming increasingly overcrowded, SL passengers often try to sneak into 3AC coaches, causing friction and security issues. Antyodaya acts as a relief valve at the very bottom of the chain, creating a domino effect that keeps Sleeper and 3AC coaches much less congested.

It is far from a perfect system, and crowd management during festival seasons is still chaotic, but dedicating entire overnight superfast trains just for unreserved passengers was a step in the right direction.

What are your thoughts? If you have traveled on an Antyodaya train recently, how was the cleanliness and did it actually feel less crowded than a standard general coach? Let me know your experiences!

Electrical , if not having good amount of complexity like complex circuits etc - like inverter etc have very low margin. Although big brandshave their own "pull" they are heavily dependent on distributors like my fil to push.

Small to medium sized shops , have very less ticket size and are heavily dependent upon distributors for the same reason.

My fil was in trade for about 15 years after which he just had enough contracts and trust to get into this. Monthly inlet is in lakhs now if not crores. But still is a very "unorganized" sector.

Even cheaper things like boards etc are very hard to score at . He regularly has to visit burrabazar in kolkata , Surat , and also delhi and Bangalore for niche items.

Everybody knows about marwaris and gujratis, gujratis will be very less easy to deal with because they know inside out and prefer their own network.

Bengalis are only few left because only the ones who had done this in generations are still continuing.
Biharis are interesting story . None came on their own accord. Very non-chalant in business.
Most of the times they work hard but look at short term gains rather than long term relationships.

Low trust even in their own circle. My fil is bihari but still faces it. (This can be due to low capital compared to others but some of them are of net worth more than 100 cr so it does not make sense)

Very lax in terms of deliveries. Can take months sometimes, they quote a higher number of availability of items and who is even looking inside the warehouse?

Many of the established businessmen are sending their sons to govt job instead and expect to carry on with this as long as money is flowing in. No consolidation

When some talks start about bargaining , they get angry easily and start bragging about their contacts etc. Though Its a part of business and is done everywhere.

Only small number of singhs and yadavs are active in again , transport and logistics.

Compared to south , the business culture here is in shambles. Sometimes he says only with a small hit of 5-6 %, he can easily move his business to south and west , and even make better money here than in our own state.

This is only at the seller side's story . The ones who buy items from us are a whole different story. But they comprise mostly of local populace and he always takes the amount first and then delivers. And only caters to repeat customers.
