CrowdWar v0.4.3 — mobile finally works: soldiers you can actually see, and a UI that stopped overlapping itself

This update is entirely about mobile. Short version: a chunk of the audience was playing a quietly broken game, and the one channel that would've told us was itself broken on their device. Fixed all of it.

The big stuff

  • You could barely see your own soldier on a phone. The camera showed the same fixed slice of the map on every device — on a phone that meant your soldier rendered at around 6 pixels tall. Phones now zoom in to keep everyone a legible size. Desktop is pixel-for-pixel unchanged.
  • The UI stopped fighting itself. The team roster, the touch controls, even your own virtual joysticks were rendering on top of the tactical map. The death screen's respawn timer collided with the feedback box. The victory screen's shareable replay clip — the whole point of that screen — was squeezed into a thin, half-height strip. All decluttered; before/after below.
  • Phones can leave feedback now. The suggestion box was silently disabled on every touch device to dodge a layout bug, so it's been invisible to mobile players since launch. That bug's fixed — it's back, and it actually fits on every screen size now.

Fixes

  • Landing page buttons were too small to tap reliably on touch.
  • Victory screen buttons overlapped on some phones.
  • Match replay captures could get corrupted if read mid-write.

CrowdWar v0.4.2 — your shots now land where you aim (real lag compensation), and artillery finally looks like artillery

This one is mostly about a single fix that changes how the whole game feels.

Hit registration is fixed at the root. A bunch of you reported shots going clean through people, and you were right. It was never the hitboxes: your screen shows every enemy a fraction of a second in the past, and the server was checking your shot against where they are NOW. Strafing targets were nearly unhittable by aiming at what you see. The server now rewinds every target to the exact moment you fired, so if your crosshair was on them on your screen, the hit counts. This is the same class of netcode big shooters use, adapted for our projectiles. It works on mobile too.

The balance pass you voted for (death-screen polls + suggestion box):

  • Bullets fly faster. Less leading your shots, snappier gunfights.
  • The pistol got real. More damage and a faster trigger. Still the starter gun, no longer a wet noodle.
  • Bots miss like humans now. Their aim error grows with distance, so they stop sniping weapon crates from across the map. Up close they still fight.
  • Factories restock faster. Less running around starving for ammo.

Artillery got the cinematic treatment. The warning ring now ticks down to a landing ping on the exact impact spot, then the shell screams in from off screen and slams into it: fireball, shockwave, dirt and sparks, smoke plumes that drift for seconds, and craters that scar the battlefield behind you. Nearby hits shake your screen. Same artillery, it just finally FEELS like artillery.

You can remap fire now. Settings → keybinds → FIRE WEAPON: bind any key (space, whatever feels right) and hold it to shoot. Left-click always works too. Good for trackpad players especially.

Small but requested: the suggestion box on the death screen no longer closes mid-sentence when you respawn. Click into it and it stays until you're done.

CrowdWar v0.4 — you voted for mags, here they are: carry spares, reload on [R]

You asked for mags more than anything else — top of the feature vote, and all over the suggestion box ("mags", "changable mags", rifle mag voted "too few"). We heard you. This update is mags.

The big stuff

  • Carry spare magazines. You now hold two full mags instead of one — a loaded mag plus a reserve on your belt. Run dry and you top up from your own reserve instead of sprinting to a crate every 20 shots. Crates still matter; you're just not helpless between them.
  • Tactical reload on [R]. Reload before you're empty — it only pulls the rounds you're missing, so nothing's wasted. You can't fire mid-swap, so do it in cover, not mid-duel. Heavier guns reload slower.
  • Ammo reads mag / reserve. The HUD shows what's in the gun and what's left on your belt, and turns red before both run out.

Fixes

  • Your own shots landing but doing no damage should now actually be fixed — the earlier pass missed the exact case most of you hit.
  • Mobile: your soldier finally moves the instant you touch, instead of a beat behind.

Coming next
Build-and-destroy cover is next up on the vote board — rate it on the death screen.

[DEV] Crowdwar — a 100v100 browser war where the front line actually moves. No download, no account, you're fighting 5 seconds after clicking.

Playable at crowdwar.io — I've spent the last few months building this solo and it's finally stable enough to share.

Top-down 100v100 shooter. Two factions, one big map, one continuous front line. Every match generates a shareable timelapse replay when it ends — here's a real one from this morning if you want to see a full war compressed into 45 seconds before jumping in.What makes it different from the usual arena shooter:

  • The front line is real. It bends section by section based on where each side is actually pushing. Win by shoving it all the way to the enemy's turret line.
  • Logistics matter. Factories produce ammo crates and someone has to physically carry them to the front. Playing supply mule for your team is genuinely useful and weirdly satisfying.
  • Pistols → rifles/SMGs/shotguns from supply crates, artillery strikes, defensive turrets.
  • Tactical map (M) showing the whole war live.

Notes:

  • Bots fill the ranks so battles are full-scale from minute one — every human who joins replaces a bot. Right now it's mostly bots + you. That's what this post is for :)
  • Server is in the EU. Client-side prediction should make it feel fine from the US — if it doesn't, tell me roughly where you are and I'll look at the numbers.
  • Free, no ads, nothing to buy. Optional Discord/Google login only if you want XP to persist.
  • Works on phones (touch controls), better with a keyboard.

Built from scratch — vanilla JS + canvas, one Node server, no engine.
Happy to answer anything about how it works. Blunt feedback ("this feels bad because X") is exactly what I want.
