What's more unhinged and unlikely in 2026: getting a junior tech job in this market or trynna make a living being a musician?

I wanna understand the extent of HOW BAD Is It out there, really. I know the good old days of learn to code and get a job are over, but Is It AS BAD?

Is Fiona supposed to look "trashy"?

Throughout the series there's a huge emphasis on the Gallaghers being so thrash and i'm not discussing that, but i mean, if someone saw Fiona without knowing her background, Is there something about her looks or aesthetic that screams "ghetto"? Like when she returned to the Cup company after the disaster and her ex-boyfriend's sister told her "when i first saw you i tried to look past where you come from", as if it were something obvious.

Seeing the Gallaghers out of context there's nothing about them visually (i mean themselves, not the state of the house or the neighborhood) that screams low-income to me. They are wearing the typical late aughts clothes, and it doesn't even look that worn. That being said, i have never lived in the United States so maybe i'm not noticing certain details. Same goes for Sammi and almost every other charachter. The only girl that looks stereotypically thrashy, or at least what i would expect fron that word, is the first Mandy.

Am i missing something?

Do you have plans to work a different job in the future?

Hello comrades.

I work afternoons cleaning a clinic. It's only doctor's offices and very minor procedures so it's pretty chill (as opposed as when i was in hospitals). The staff is small and second shift has zero management, every boss leaves at 4 and as long as they find everything in order no one bothers us. We barely even talk to each other and we all work at our pace in our own schedule, we just clock in at 2:00 and leave at 9:30.

The downsides to this job is that we are not provided with enough or adequate supplies amongst some other bureaucratuc bullshit, but otherwise it's whatever. I have way too much off time, i tried to study in the past but can't focus since we have no proper office or "hangout" spot besides the smelly drain and storage rooms. I mainly kill time either by leaving somewhere nearby, having way too long lunch breaks, or talking to some of the other staff, not the other janitors, the people at the x-ray station, who apparently also have too much time on their hands as well.

Anyway, recently i got a call to schedule my exam to switch positions so i can work in an office. If i were guaranteed to stay in this clínic i would not hesitate but since it's a government position i could be sent anywhere in the city, and where i am right now i have a very short commute. I am afraid to let this job go because there Is no going back if i don't like the new job. If i quit they won't re-hire and even if they did, i wouod most likely be sent to a hospital and not a clínic. I hate hospitals. Not for the nature of the job but because the hundreds of employees and their drama drains the hell out of me.

I am naturally restless and can't see myself in an office but i don't know what else to do. I'm 35, no education no experience besides low end jobs, neurodivergent, all the good stuff. I would like to be an engineer but, ageism and all that shit aside, i don't know if i would be a good fit for corporate life. Who the hell dreams about that anyway? I'm also not after a lot of money. I just wish i could do something my brain finds interesting, but i'm dissapointed in the current hellscape of the job market. If i ever go back to school, the clínic is also really close to campus. By the way, i was a CS/computer engineering major 3 years ago (dropped out) and the number AI and automatization aré doing for junior devs is more than discouraging as well. i really enjoyed that shit :(

I'm afraid to let this go but also i don't know if i should stay where i am forever. It keeps me active but i don't think that working with all the chemicals and the strain on your back Is any good long term. And i need to decide next week whether to take the office test or not.

How's life going for you?

If you could turn back time, would you change majors?

I started my computer engineering degree (i'm in Mexico, currículum is pretty similar to what is called CS) back in 2022, did three semestres then dropped out to focus on working exclusively. I'm ready to go back in January but since the market has changed so much and it apparently is all doom and gloom, i've been thinking about switching to either digital systems or electrical engineering. The courses i already took wouldn't go to waste since the 3 programs have almost the same math and physics foundations except for a class or two and i can re-validate them and switch programs without hassle.

I like both hardware and software, love to code but also using my hands fixing electronics and also enjoyed learning the basics of electric installations. I'd like to work on designing synthesizers, i'm also very into electronic music. I can pick whatever major has the best chances of landing a job.

Industries where gossiping like it's high school is NOT the norm?

I have a stable job in a field i'm not even remotely interested in (janitor in hospital settings with the option to move up in healthcare, which Is a hell no for me). Been at it for two years, because it's part time and really flexible but the work culture is wearing me out. I wanna go back to school to finish my engineering degree, i know the market is shit but i'm willing to take the risk. If it all goes wrong i can always go back to being a janitor or whatever, i'm not someone with much to lose.

My question is: Is people really Like this everywhere? Am i better off trying to start a business because i will bump into the same shit over and over again because people will be people no matter what? Although i'm not personally attacked since i keep to myself, being around all that drains the hell out of me. I have developed health issues from all the depression, especially stomach issues that seem to be stress related, i got hooked on benzos which i have been tapering slowly off, and i'm not willing to put up with this anymore. I will never forgive myself if i don't leave out of fear, but also don't wanna idealize other jobs. Maybe i'm better off as an entrepreneur selling coffee, idk. Maybe i'll end up in the streets.

For what it's worth, i'd like to work as an electrical/computer/digital systems engineer or tech. (I am not in the USA, education is cheap here). Aré the coworkers in those fields just as petty and miserable as elsewhere? I've only ever held low-end odd jobs. But a friend who works a higher-paying job in an office setting also hates everyone else there.

Insight?

How come so many people have an irrational cockroach phobia even if other insects pose more of a threat but don't cause the same reaction?

As a techno fan, if you had to DJ at a coffeeshop, what would you play ?

Title says all, was asked to DJ at this random even so I can't go too crazy with the bpm or industrial sounds, but also don't wanna play the cheesy progressive house I was suggested. I figured you may have some suggestions.

Remove if not allowed

EDIT - not a dutch coffeeshop, just a regular cafe, thanks for your answers!

Just did my first gig 😭

I got the basics down ages ago but had not touched a controller in years.

A friend of mine throws this tiny bazaars or flea markets in cafés and asked me to DJ there. Whatever genre i wanted. I procrastinated the whole thing because of work, didn't even had a playlist, got ready in two days, from downloading music to trying out mixes.

It came out great! Granted, if i didn't beatmatch on time i used Serato (i cant be bothered to fix beatgrids so the sync button doesnt work and sometimes the bpm is read wrong, but i used my eyes to see which way to nudge), i used youtube rips, i pre-planned the tracklist, i pretty much comitted every single DJing cardinal sin there Is but I SHOWED UP and fixed issues in real time which you have no idea what an accomplishment It Is for me.

When i was younger i was so stuck in perfectionism i dared not leave my bedroom. Also i was terrified of being judged by techno snobs. I actually once cancelled a gig like this one because i just felt like i couldnt. I just couldn't allow myself to fuck up like this.

Some of my transitions yesterday kinda sucked but literally no one noticed and they even "booked" me for a home party and more events in other cafes. This is insane!

I've been going through some really bad times for the past years but i accidentally reconnected with something i was absolutely obssesed with a while back. I forgot what it feels like to lock two tracks on time by ear even if only by a few seconds. And oddly enough i wasnt nervous, just really really focused.

A great surprise and a hobby i intend to return to! It's such a nice way to connect with people, finding a middle ground between playing what they want for the kind of event (its a coffeeshop, not berghain!), but also only playing tracks i love and seeing how someone else appreciates it is a beautiful thing. I did not expect for people to even pay attention to the music in a flea market but i felt really welcomed.

I wanna re build a proper library with good audio quality and prepare myself better for the next times. Even dust off my vinyl collection! But for this time i'm glad i finally put myself out there and not chicken out! In the end it's all about having fun. It's so weird that people think i'm a DJ and i feel like an impostor but i'm not complaining! This is the weirdest side hustle i wasn't even looking for!
