Solid first speakers?

I’ve been mixing on headphones for the last few months but really wanna hear how my mixes sound on some speakers. I live in an apartment so don’t wanna go too crazy but also still want something with a lil kick to it !

Any recommendations ? 👀

Anyone play indie electronic? (Neil Frances, Jungle, etc)

The two examples I gave I know they are both popular bands, but for some reason I'm the only DJ in my area who plays that kind of music, and I have no clue why. It works in so many different settings and it's an inoffensive genre, one where if you put it on in a mixed crowd most people don't mind it. Anyone else play this vibe?

DJ & Gamer? Help me find the perfect track

Hi there,

I want to surprise my brother with a DJ set at his birthday party.

I'd like to play video games BGM (either a full set of these or a mix between other tracks and BGM).

For context, my brother loves games like:

- Ragnarok Online

- Final Fantasy

- Rayman

- Beyond Good and Evil

- Zelda

- Metroid Prime

Could you please recommend a few tracks?

NB: I just got into DJing (last month).

Easiest way to handle transitions?

I’d like to know what would be the most convenient and easy way of transitioning between songs because I could make a playlist of songs within an hour because it’s pretty much all I listen to but I’d probably struggle to do flashy mixes and transitions as a newbie and knowing me that would take a long time to learn T…T I just want a fast way to make a coherent short live set that would be reasonable for a small rave

I’m also curious if you could essentially just edit all of the music at home to have pre-made transitions sound bites etc and then just be able to let that play like a playlist?

Context: I went to a rave that hosted relatively small DJs and I’ve always wanted to share my music taste with people with jcore isn’t that popular in my country so I thought potentially being able to DJ at the events I go to would be a good way to have fun instead of just being disappointed at how little hardcore is played (I studied music in high school so I still have some knowledge up there xD although I forgot most of it)

I also noticed a few new DJs struggling with transitions or finding the correct nobs so I feel like I wouldn’t be judged either as long as I play good music and everyone’s happy :D

Sub and speaker

I am looking to buy a PA Sub 18 inch and Pa Speakers
I am going back n forth between alto professional and JBL. I will be djing in my bedroom and occasional house parties with 20-40 people. I want bass. What PA Sub and Speakers would you recommend. People who own the gear and have experience with the gear can you please help me out. Thanks My budget is 2500 usd and I am from india. Sub and speakers cost more because of the taxes but it’s only 100-200 dollars extra than what it would cost in USA.

Has anyone here taken a long break from DJing and gotten back into it in their 40s?

I used to DJ in my early 30s, and now that I'm in my early 40s, I'm thinking about getting back into it as a hobby.

Obviously, both the local scene and the music scene where I live have changed a lot over the past 10 years. Back then, I got booked mainly because of my music selection, even though I never really mastered DJing on Pioneer gear. I learned mostly on Traktor controllers with a laptop.

I'd love to hear from others who've made a similar comeback. How did it go? Did you find it difficult to adapt to how things have changed?

CDJs say ‘no usb’ — help!

Was at a party last night and finally got a chance to play on proper decks after practicing with a controller and Rekordbox. I had prepared my usb by formatting to FAT32 and I exported a playlist via rekordbox, but the cdj just said ‘no usb’ (even though the light was on to indicate it was plugged in). Any ideas where I’ve gone wrong? They were CDJ-2000s I believe

[I did a thing] - Which tracks Dj's mixed with which?

Hi! I had this idea for a long time and I actually developed it 10 years ago!, but ended up giving up. This year I decided to give it another try, mostly to use it myself.

The way I like to discover music is seeing what other DJs mixed after some song I like / have. So I built mixinout to find exactly that, you look up a track and see what was actually played after it and what came before in real sets. I also added key detection, so you can explore by key, BPM, artist, label... and get inspiration for your own sets from there.

10 years ago someone told me this would just be "copying other DJs" and I got pretty discouraged, enough to drop the whole thing. Today I see it the other way. Nobody is going to play someone else's set front to back, but knowing that two tracks were mixed together by a DJ you respect is like digging in their crate. You find music you would never search for by name, and then you do your own thing with it. For me this enhances creativity, it doesn't kill it. Digging has always worked like this, I just made it searchable.

It's free, I built it for myself first. I hope you enjoy it and I appreciate any kind of feedback, good or bad: https://www.mixinout.com

Best home setup to prepare for playing on CDJ-3000s?

I’m trying to build a home setup that’s as close as possible to what I’ll find in clubs, and I’m torn between two options.

Option 1: Buy a Pioneer XDJ-XZ.

From what I’ve read, it’s the closest all-in-one unit to the CDJ-3000 experience. I also like that it supports FLAC, seems to have a faster workflow than older players, and the jog wheels and overall feel are apparently very similar to the CDJ-3000s.

Option 2: Buy an Allen & Heath Xone:92 and pair it with XDJ-700s.

The problem is that the Xone:92 is my favorite mixer by far, and I’d love to have one at home. However, I’m worried that the XDJ-700s are getting quite old. From what I understand, I’d need to prepare my USBs differently in Rekordbox compared to what I’d use for CDJ-3000s, and I don’t want to build a workflow that doesn’t translate well when I play in clubs.

So my priority is to practice at home in a way that makes the transition to club gear as seamless as possible.

If you were in my position, which setup would you choose? Is the XDJ-XZ closer to the real CDJ-3000 experience, or is it worth sacrificing that to have a Xone:92 at home? I’d especially love to hear from people who regularly play on CDJ-3000s in clubs.

Turntable Inconsistent pitch??

Hey guys, so im wondering how everyone is setting up their turntables? Bc, when I try to mash two songs together, it doesnt seem to stay consistent even tho bpm reads are matched? Im starting to wonder if this is a hardware problem. I have a Numark tt200 that hasnt been serviced, as far as I know. And Ive always been just eyeballing the "height" of the turntables. Do turntable users use an actual level to get it perfectly flat? What exactly am i doing wrong here? Thanks

Good portable Sound System?

Hello people!

I'm looking for a stereo sound system (2 speakers) for outdoor/indoor sessions with a maximum of 20 people. My audio source is the MPC Live 3. Ideally, the system should have 3.5mm or 6.3mm AUX inputs. My budget is a maximum of 1000€.
The speakers should be portable, so not too big. I would be very grateful for any suggestions, as there are many speakers on the market and I don't have much experience.
I bought Minirig 4s but im pretty disappointed so now im sending them back..
in first place they are too stressful to handle in wired mode and have too much issues for me.
im not a professional DJ so i just do it for fun for family, friends and myself :)

Beatmatching question / phrasing

Hi,

Quick question about beatmatching ,I'm mixing on vinyl.

When you're beatmatching the second track (what you hear in your headphones), should you always aim to land the kick on the "1" of a starting phrase? Or is it fine to line up on any first beat within that phrase, (for beatmatching purposes to find the right bpm, not sending in the mix)

after finding the right bpm :

should I still try to hit the "1" of a starting phrase specifically, or is matching on any beat within the phrase good enough

is that the way that we should do it ?

I would appreciate, if you could write how do you beatmatch, the whole process from beatmatching to sending in the track in the mix. It would really help, thanks !

How to record Rekordbox set when using Spotify

I’m using Spotify so I can’t record on Rekordbox, and I’m also using speakers so it’s been hard to figure out the correct configuration. I want to use either Audacity or OBS. I’ve tried lots of configurations in both, but none of them allow me to use my speakers at the same time as recording.

Doing a one-off DJ event.

Precursor: I am not a DJ. I've never DJ'd anything, but I was asked to DJ a small outdoor family wedding. Like 30-40 people. I was given a bluetooth speaker and mic by my mother in law, and asked to put together a playlist.

I think I was given the job because they trusted my music taste and also just wanted me to be a part of their wedding, which I'm super-excited about. I just wanted to know some do's and dont's of the event so I dont ruin anything or miss any opportunities.

Any advice will help. Thank you!!

Recording on rekordbox free version using SoundCloud tracks?

I need to record a mix using SoundCloud tracks on Rekordbox. Every time I try, it says “ invalid operation REC is disabled when streaming tracks are loaded on a deck”. Do I have to upgrade my Rekordbox account, or is there a way I can record for free?

The other lost art, networking

Another topic I see here constantly is the confusion surrounding networking. The concept of communicating to other parties that you’re interested in playing out at an event.

I’m going to take this from a regional dj and artist perspective, so take that for what it’s worth. as the intent of this sub is to help beginners, I think this perspective is valuable. I definitely welcome a different point of view of course, especially if you’ve made it past your local scene. If you’re getting booked in different cites, making money from it and generally filling a calendar, I see this as a different level. That said, you have to walk before you fly.

This fascination with social media, streaming sets, SoundCloud mixes, announcements. I don’t think any of it is relevant to get your first gigs. I think people think they need this brand identity right away, they put in a ton of effort on marketing, social media blasts, tons of cold calling then they end up frustrated and confused why they’re not getting gigs.

I see this frustration from beginners, who are still finding their place, and scene veterans alike. Two different types of djs, perhaps, but they face the same problem. The beginner who has made a fancy logo and has many mixes online isn’t getting gigs. The veteran who just wants to get booked, “because I have skills and I’m a great dj” - none of this matters in 2026. *Again, at least in the context of starting out, or reviving your name*

Frustrated djs should ask themselves why they’re pursuing this in the first place. Be very honest, less than a single percentage of djs are going to make a long career out of playing music. What’s your realistic goal?

I see people trying to go all in on music, there is a chasm between a popular, busy, regional dj, and an artist that regularly tours. It’s such a huge jump, and takes so long, most people quit. This really isn’t about that though. This about the seemingly simple task of getting booked locally.

The answer? Simple, show up. Don’t email, don’t send a mix, don’t link socials. Show up to the event and pay to get in. Really want to stand out? Ask what you can do to help. Promotion, carrying in sound system and DJ equipment, work the door, strike up a conversation. If this seems like too much, then don’t expect much out of this culture.

I’m hearing so much groaning lately about not getting gigs, but these same djs don’t do anything about it. Even worse, I’m seeing djs slam other promoters; they don’t like how they promote the music and culture. And again these same djs have *never once thrown their own event* -do the math. I’m never going to book those people. DJs whose skills I totally admire, they won’t get booked because of their negative attitude.

Don’t do it. Don’t fall for the negative victim BS. Don’t like what your local promoter is all about? Ignore them and *create your own culture*

Of course at some point, your skills behind the decks matter. I argue that selection is paramount and the most important aspect of djing, and I stand by that. However, in no way do I mean that you shouldn’t cultivate your skills. Just know that digital djing is relatively easy. Once you learn the basics, it’s just about reading your crowd. Beyond that you’re leveling up, and you should, but be aware that only a few select people will notice.

When I stated out, I was attending parties, I was already a part of the culture. When I began djing it was a natural extension. I was lucky as the network was there for me, because I had a personal relationship with the people creating the shows. Then I threw my own events, I experienced all the challenges and rewards, it made me respect all promoters. I don’t talk negatively about any promoter and if there is a promoter I don’t vibe with? I simply ignore and respect them. It’s a hustle.

Just show up, put some of your own skin in the game and be a genuine person. That stands out more than anything else and makes promoters want to work with you. Also, dance. No one dances enough anymore. 😎
