Inconsistent noise from RD. Cross chaining seems to alleviate the noise but proper gearing has a clicking / grinding noise in mid gears, but fine in highest and lowest.

[Videos] cannot get fresh cable install to work, followed the proper process, replaced new housing, new cables, routed them and adjusting tension causing the shifter to seize and and still not be able to shift FD.

The cable end is seated all the way in the shifter, fed through to the guide and the cover, I lubed the shifter cable guide slightly, routed the cable through the housing into the frame, out of the bottom bracket base of the frame where the plastic guide is, over the guide as properly routed, into the FD and attached with a bit of strength enough to remove any slack.

Barrel adjuster was completely backed off when the cable is attached to the FD.

The shifter works fine while not hooked up, the shifter also works fine while hooked up with basic tension but does not move the FD.

Increasing tension via the barrel adjuster for the FD slightly still does not allow for the FD to shift. Increasing tension further allows for the FD to shift but at extreme tension and leverage on the from shifter almost feeling like breaking it. You can see at the end of the second video I cannot even do it with one hand leveraging my thumb off the bar while recording with the other. That was a lot of power just for it to not shift.

I don’t know what the fuck is wrong with this but this is the reason why I replaced my house and cables because I thought the inadequate FD performance and tuning was due to cable stretch and trying to solve it by increasing the tension via barrel adjuster before on the old housing and cables resulted in the same problem with the front shifter.

Please help.

Tiagra front derailleur spring seems very stiff despite being cleaned and lubed. Requires a ton of tension to shift properly and avoid rubbing, causing stretched cables over time as well as always needing to be adjusted.

I have a Scott Speedster Gravel 40 and I’ve learned to service my own bike over the time and I understand how to tune a drivetrain it’s pretty straightforward, except this FD makes me want to shoot myself in the foot every month.

I’ll tune it and it’ll ride just fine then after a while it starts rubbing and so I address it and then it’s fine then it starts rubbing again and over and over until I’m maxing out the tension on the barrel adjuster and begin stretching the cables. I have rectified everything between the shifter and the FD and I’m now starting to think that the spring tension on the FD is just way too much. Manually pushing it requires quite a bit of force but I also understand force is levered through distance so it may not be as much on the shifter.

I’m losing my mind. I have new cables and housing coming in today so I’m replacing them and I want to make sure when I spent the time setting it up that it’s not going to just cause me the same problems again.

Anyone have any ideas?

Is something like this at half the price of a Jagwire kit going to diverge much in quality?

Looking for recommendations tools / kit to replace shifter cables.

My local bike shops like many others inflate their stock prices so I’m wondering if anyone has bought some tools or even better a full kit that has all the resources to properly replace shifter cables from something like Amazon.

The housing is fine but the end cap on the FD cable sheared and they feel stretched so I wanted to replace them but I don’t have any tools or experience. I’m sure it’s somewhat straightforward so I’m happy to learn and do it myself.

The drivetrain is a shimano tiagra but I’d assume that doesn’t matter as it seems most cables are universal to the majority of extent with a few outliers for MTB’s.

Anyways I need cable, end caps, a cable cutter and whatever else you guys recommend to do it myself. Also what type of cable is recommended best quality for price?

Thanks.

I found this pretty difficult to spot and never actually did in the game. Can you spot it?
