[routine help] advice on mothers skin

Hello!

I’m making this post for my mother (60f). The skin on her neck seems to be very irritated, and has been for quite some time. I was hoping we could get some advice on what products may help. Ideally she would like to go to a dermo but unfortunately we cannot afford it.

She uses Cerave moisturizing cream and would apply color science sunscreen over it daily. She’s been using these products for years but since this irritation she stopped applying the sunscreen and just ties a scarf to protect from the sun.

She’s tried applying some Vaseline to soothe the irritation but that didn’t work, she then tried diaper cream and it still made no difference.

The scar on her neck is from thyroid cancer surgery she had a few years back.

Crusty red ear

Hello! I (32f) just noticed my cats (7f) right ear is very red and crusty on the fold. It is just in this area.

I’m very concerned for her, as well as concerned that it’s something that my four month old baby could also catch (our cat loves the baby and is always trying to sit on the rocking chair, in her stroller, etc).

I’ve attached photos, but my cat is very wiggly and it was hard to get a decent one. I do plan on calling and taking her to the vet (though we certainly cannot afford it), but it’s nighttime here and I’m up panicked over this.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? We are in the United States and my cat is spayed.

(So sorry I posted this twice, I’m so stressed and forgot to add photos!)

Safety with a newborn

Hello. I’m new to the neighborhood, as well as a new mom to a 3 month old. I live off of Northern Blvd and was wondering how safe it was to take my baby out alone with me. Is crime and assault something to worry about?

It’s hard being inside with the baby all day and I was hoping to find things for us to do, but I do not own a car and I do worry because there does seem to be quite a few drunks outside my apartment all day long. I really don’t mind how lively it is and hope I’m just being overly cautious, but I do get whistled at quite often and it makes me nervous that things could escalate.

Also, would it be safe to go to Main Street alone with my baby? I would be riding the bus.

Any advice would be welcome!

Postpartum and hate my home

Hello everyone! I am 12w pp and struggling. I was diagnosed with ppd and ppa and am in active therapy for it.

I have a wonderful partner who is very helpful with our baby but is now returning back to work, so naturally it is hitting me hard.

My pregnancy was relatively easy, but hard in the sense that we were moving quite a bit. We moved four times in the past year. We finally found a place to stay and I’m having a very hard time adjusting. My baby came a week before my induction and the day after we moved into this apartment, so I never had time to truly settle. We came home with our newborn while still living out of boxes in a place that was not properly cleaned. Since then, we’ve unpacked a bit and sorted things out, but I’ve come to really hate this place and I’m just not sure if it’s my postpartum depression or what?

We’re living in a major city, which is wonderful because it’s walkable and I have everything I need around me, but we are also in the not-very-safe part of town. This is a very large apartment (first floor of a house) and we wouldn’t have found anything for this size and price. I felt very lucky at first, but now I’m understanding why we were able to snag such a big place. It’s an old house and I find myself grossed out by it due to neglect from my landlord. My biggest issues is an awful musty smell in the house that especially comes up from the basement on humid days. My landlord keeps telling us that everything’s fine so I’m basically forced to just accept it, but with my PPA I’m just afraid we’re all breathing in bad air and getting sick. We have reached out to her multiple times but she continues to tell us it’s just an old house. I have air purifiers running and my baby shows no signs of illness, but I can’t shake the feeling that something is very wrong.

Things keep breaking one after another, leaking, crumbling. This house is so dusty no matter how you clean and open the windows to air it out. I have concerns for when my little one begins to crawl because the floors are just old and very gross.

On top of that, we have a mouse issue. It seems to be under control, I haven’t seen any mice myself and an exterminator has taken care of things and we have not seen any droppings since, but I can’t help but feel so violated and uncomfortable.

With my husband returning to work and me being alone with the baby all day, I just wish my home felt like my sanctuary. I find myself crying most days instead of focusing on enrichment activities with my baby. We just moved here and cannot afford to move again, so I need to suck it up and make this place more comfortable, but I’m so depressed over the whole thing that I literally cannot do a thing. I’m just in survival mode with my sweet (and colic) baby right now and I feel like no one is taking my concerns seriously. The only thing that helps me is knowing that this is a rental and one day we will move to a house with a yard and fresh air, and I just need to be patient. But that can be years from now and it’s so hard for me to change my mindset when I’m in it.

I’m not sure what I’m looking for by posting this. Perhaps words of comfort. I’m desperate to reframe how I view this place and desperate for ways to just make it cozier and feel safer.
