Seeking an outdoorsy hobby that contributes to community

I’m a hiker, backpacker, world traveler, and peak bagger who also has degrees in environmental sciences and geography. The explorer part of me has taken a backseat the last year as I get dialed in at my job. I’d like to keep it that way as I find it doesn’t exactly contribute to community except in giving beta to other explorers.

I want to find a hobby that expresses my love and knowledge of the outdoors and contributes to community or becomes a business. I’m open to creative outlets, but nothing that collects clutter. I prefer a clean, organized living space. I’ve done volunteering and trail work and found that building things were the best part. Everything else like digging roots and trail walks with kids felt like an extension of work rather than unplugging. My boyfriend has suggested something to do with researching plants since I garden, mushroom hunt, and he’s always impressed with my plant id.

What do you know that I don’t?

Is Commuting by Vespa in the West Hills a good idea?

Do you or have you ever commuted to work through the West Hills by scooter like a Vespa? Or maybe you commute by car and shake your head at these scooters?

I’m going back forth on the idea of getting a motorcycle endorsement, but a Vespa, and commute to OHSU since scooters/motorcycles get a free permit to park. Insurance and gas would be cheap, but would the fall/winters be that awful on Barnes and the Council Crest area?

Starting location: near 185th

Parking is incredibly unaffordable. I get it. Supply/demand. So bus it is.

Should I?

A) Take the Max to downtown and take the 8 to the hill.

B) drive to the Freddie’s in Raleigh Hills to park and catch the 56. I’m worried about getting towed. Are there better places to park to get the 56?

Just like parents deserve their own meetup spaces, those who choose to be childfree and stay that way deserve to have their communities. Would Portlanders be interested in joining a community on FB or Meetup? Or both???

I have experience facilitating FB groups in the past. I’m at a place in my life to run one again. I understand how to engage, welcome inclusivity, manage drama, kick negativity out.

One major rule I’m envisioning in this group is refraining from negativity towards those who have children. It’s a choice. Be nice. Some people actually enjoy children. Let’s not yuck their yum. We have a choice and reasons to be childfree. We have hobbies, pets, careers, plants, friends, families, communities, volunteering that fulfill our happiness quota.

Just an idea to build. I’ll delete it if the responses suggest.

UPDATE: here’s the link to the FB group:

I know there’s a typo in the title. It’s too late to change it unless someone can DM how.
