stats 1000 difficulty level?

hey there! i'm a rising junior currently enrolled in stats 1000 with kristina paris for the fall semester. i'm pulling my first 18 credit semester (11 of which are stem) and i'm worrying about the workload/difficulty for that class. i'm going to have a ton on my plate and stats is the one class this semester i would be able to drop if needed. dr paris's reviews on rmp are glowing but i'm pretty nervous for this upcoming semester 🥲 i have a little bit of stats background but i admit it probably isn't anything too much. tysm in advance!

for yall working during the heat wave this week:

how are you all planning on coping with it? this might sound goofy but i think this is my first time working at walmart during a massive heat wave (i've been here a little over a year). i stage most if not all my shift and pick when i'm not. it's not often i dispense but i'm preparing for the possibility of that happening this week

i'm VERY heat intolerant to the point where i can pass out due to the heat. it's a medical issue my doctor is trying to figure out and it can be extremely dangerous since, at times, i can't really tell if i'm going to pass out (it can come on very suddenly). with this being said... the heat index is going to be over 105°F every day i work during the heat wave and i'm fearing for the worst 💔. i'm thinking about taking out on the 3rd since the heat index is going to be 109°F and i just know it's going to be busy as fuck (i'll only have half a point when that date comes and it'll be my first time calling out since i came back from my academic LOA so i'm fine taking the 2 point hit)

i drink a ton of water during my shift (usually at least 60-80 oz) and dress appropriately (t shirt and shorts) but idk if it'll be enough. i'll be wearing my neck fans too but the max setting on one of my mine only lasts about 2 hours and i have 2 to cycle through. i'll be wearing my smartwatch as well so i can keep an eye on my heart rate. i'm taking a ton of precautions but idk if it'll be enough. i'm not even sure how to bring this up to my team leads 😭. thank you so much in advance for any advice

course load question as a junior pursuing their first lead research position

hi there!! i've had my schedule confirmed for months. however, i recently found out that i landed a scholarship that allows me to fund my first lead research! i'm really excited for this opportunity and i'm really looking forward to working with my team to make this a reality. it means a lot to me personally and it'll be incredible experience for me as i want to go into a phd program and research as a career

i'm currently enrolled in 17 credits. i'm retaking orgo 1 which was EVIL the first time around and i failed. i'm also enrolled to take stats 1000, microbio lab for microbio majors, microbio lab writing practicum, the 1100 level german class, and intro to disability studies. i'm planning on taking my first of three capstones next semester, and with how the capstone works for the bioethics certificate, i would be enrolling in an additional 1 credit research course to help compensate for the credit hours spent on my research since it will take more than one semester to complete. that means i'll be enrolled in 18 credits. i'm also working a part-time job on the weekends

i'm worried about handling all of this at once. all of my previous semesters have been 14-16 credits so this is a HUGE jump for me. the only class i believe i would be able to drop is stats 1000 since i have to take the other classes this semester. even if i drop this class i'll still be working part time, taking 14 credits, and having a lead research position for the first time

for any student who has done lead research while at pitt: do you have any advice on how to balance all of this? i'm worried about burning out (which has happened in the past with less on my plate). i'll be meeting with my director on tuesday to discuss the capstone but i'm mentally trying to figure out how i'll be able to do this. thank you so much in advance and i hope you all are having a great summer ❤️

too many orders 💔 send help

i can't think of a better post title so don't kill me 😭. some background: i know how to pick, stage, and dispense but 99.9% of the time they have me staging (i'm pretty good at it apparently lol). i do work at a supercenter if that matters but our pod is surprising small considering how many orders we've been getting

apparently our order cap went up about a week or two ago and istg it has been like hell's front porch ever since. we have 26 delivery trip spots (counting a spot as 3 orders worth/two pallets), 16 (?) pickup spots with two pallets each, and the two in-home areas. when we get busy we make 6 more delivery spots where the carts go. yesterday we got so busy that we were completely out of delivery room and had to use the middle section where the carts queue (that gave us about 12 more spots... and we were still out of room for a bit after that 💀). we haven't been THAT busy since the holidays (christmas time)

we are too understaffed for this. my team has probably around 60ish people working per day and a decent chunk leave by 2pm. i work 10am-7pm and, by the time we leave, there is usually three dispensers, a prepper, a stager (optional ig 🫩), and maybe 1-2 pickers. when i leave at 7pm or 8pm there have been 400 to over 1000 picks remaining for the night. we are doing the best we can. i genuinely don't think upper management gets that because, when the morning people come in to fix the mess of the day before and are running around, our coach gets PISSED. thankfully he is on vacation again for the second time since my leave of absense ended (about a month) so we are somewhat spared ig 😭

i genuinely wish i could do something about this. our backroom is too small and our team is too small to handle this many orders. i love my team, i honestly really like my job, but it has been so overwhelming. i filled out the survery before this change occurred so i might be cooked on that end. today upper management turned off pickups (no clue they could do that 🤷) so we're just doing delivery orders which (shocker!) we have no room for 😭. when i left for my lunch we had probably at least 7 carts queued up to stage and only 2-3 stagers. idk what i'm even aiming for with making this post but please tell me i'm not the only one with a team that is being squashed alive with too many orders

advice regarding unconventional name change

hi! for context, i'm transgender/nonbinary, 20 years old, and have been thinking hard about my name change. it likely won't be for a while as i don't have the funds currently but i have known i want to change my legal name for years. however, i suppose i'm a bit worried about it being "unconventional" or "unprofessional"

i've gone by the name bonk since i was 14 years old (before i even came out). it was originally a silly nickname but it genuinely became a name i saw as home. it genuinely suits me so much better than the name my parents gave me, and i have a lot of love towards it. most of the people in my life know me as bonk, and i've even started to do some research at my university under the name bonk. i knew i wanted to wait to change my name to give it time to develop, and although i've changed a lot over time, i've always been solid about bonk being my name

i want to get my phd and go into research. the main worry i have is that people will judge my intellect or character based off my name. i know it's likely a silly thought but it was a point my parents brought up when i came out. "how will people take you seriously?" was a phrase said multiple times. i've learned over my time as a college student that people genuinely do value me and don't think less of me because of my name but it is still a worry in the back of my head. if anything, i feel like my name has helped me because people remember my name really easily as it is very rare so connections are easy to make

i also go by toby. i chose it when i was a junior or senior in high school as my "serious" name. i originally planned on changing my name to toby. however, i'm not so sure if that will be the plan. i love both names and either way i would be happy. i use both names in my daily life. i go by toby at work mostly for convenience. i worked as a cashier in high school and realized that i'd rather not be questioned by customers every day so i started using toby for work starting at my next job. besides that people in my life use both bonk and toby. all of my things at college that use a preferred name read as bonk, and that is the name all of my professors know me as

i hope that gives a bit of preface to my dilemma. it's really hard for me to decide between the two. bonk is the name that's been with me for years and grown with me. meanwhile, toby is (i suppose) a bit more professional and harder to judge. i wanted to seek an outside opinion to help in my decision. thank you in advance, and i'm open to answering any further questions that are needed to help decide!

deciding between going personal item only or personal item + carry-on for 2 day trip

hello! i started looking at plane tickets tonight for a concert i'm going to in august. i'm in a bit of a predicament!

i'm attending a concert in nj on august 29th. my plan is to fly into newark on the evening of august 28th (i have college classes until 2pm) and leave on august 30th. i'm flying in from pittsburgh if that counts for anything. my airbnb is reserved from august 28th to the morning of august 30th. unfortunately i did not know all the cheapest flights back are in the evening so i'll be doing a bit of an exploration before i fly back in the evening! i'm trying to decide between going with a carry-on or not and it's a pretty hard decision for me 🥲 i was hoping you all could help me decide! i have a decent amount of flights under my belt (22 flights at 20 years old, 6 of those i did solo) but i'm more nervous about this trip since it's my first trip that is almost entirely solo/independent

i'm waiting to buy tickets for now as i want to watch the price for a bit longer and i don't have the money atm to purchase but i know i will be flying united for this trip. i don't really have a budget for transportation costs but i would *really* like to keep the plane ticket under $300 including all fees/travel insurance. obviously if i need to i will spend the extra money

**PERSONAL ITEM**

pros

- less stuff to haul around when exploring

- cheaper flight cost ($191)

cons

- i'm worried i'll run out of room (i'm not buying any merch at this show but i'll still need to pack enough to last me two days)

- i'm pretty unfamiliar with traveling with just a personal item. i'm not really sure what to bring and what not to bring to save space

**CARRY-ON + PERSONAL ITEM**

pros

- more room to pack + bring home souvenirs

- i'm really familiar with traveling with this combo

cons

- more stuff to haul around when exploring (i can't imagine that'll be fun in the city)

- pricier flight ($261+)

thank you so much in advance for any advice! if you have experience with just traveling with a personal item, please bestow your knowledge onto me 🙏. also feel free to drop any recommendations for things to see/do in newark! i'll literally have the whole day of august 30th to myself to do things. i was thinking of going to the SEA LIFE aquarium but i'm honestly down for anything! bonus if it is on the more affordable side or free

food anxiety regarding traveling

hello! i just found this sub recently. i've been very selective with eating since childhood but finally started arfid treatment with my therapist about two months ago. i've mostly focused on trying to eat more regularly, trying new foods when possible in everyday life, and going to restaurants with accommodations to reduce anxiety (reviewing the menu beforehand etc). it's been really hard, especially since my current treatment isn't very structured, but i've been doing my best and i've seen some improvement!

i've been traveling for years and i can usually find food pretty easily. with that being said, a friend is taking me to a new restaurant while i visit them in boston. i really want to try lobster because i heard lobster rolls are really popular in new england and this is my first time visiting that region! however, i'm quite nervous about trying it because i'm not really sure what to expect and lobster is *expensive* (wasting food makes me anxious). there are other options i can order (i'm a huge seafood fan) but i was really looking forward to trying lobster for the first time. i really like crab (especially snow crab) and i'm not sure how similar lobster is to it. i was wondering if there was any way i could reduce stress regarding my decision. ordering a backup option would likely be quite expensive and my budget for this trip is pretty low due to me being a broke college student. thank you so much in advance! i'm sorry if this is a silly question; i could totally be overthinking this

20X - what can you assume based off of my visited states, and where should i visit in 2027?

i will be revisiting ohio and new jersey this year as well. i leave for boston on thursday! :) was considering adding michigan in for this year but unfortunately i know it wouldn't have worked out logistics wise 🥀

hi there! i'm a rising undergrad junior hoping to join a phd program for infectious disease. my research passion is the intersectionality of infectious disease and disability! i was incredibly lucky to become acquainted with a research team at my university and i've joined three research collaboratives that are under their watch. there is a paper in the progress of getting published that i have a co-authorship on and i've started the process of seeking funding for research that i would likely have lead/first author on (i am leading the research project but the team is assisting/mentoring me). this is where my question comes in!

i have experience with wet labs through lab courses i've taken and/or will take at my university (~5-6 wet lab courses, at least two of which being research lab courses). all of my research i've participated in so far involves disability studies, though my research proposal ties more into infectious disease (it looks into ways to increase accessibility for newly disabled college students, especially those who became disabled during/after the covid pandemic). does research topic matter a lot when applying to phd programs? i can easily explain how my research ties into my interests in research, especially my newer research, and i have years of experience working in a collaborative/group setting on research (i'll have about three years of experience by the time i apply) but i'm worried that my lack of getting published for wet labs might hurt my application

thank you so much in advance for any advice! i have a long way to go regarding any applications, but i'm trying to get more information and build up a plan for when i do apply!
