I’m writing a horror movie about Stull, Kansas. My friend said most people outside Kansas have no idea about it. That’s it’s not a pop culture thing. Is that true?

Genuinely? I cant figure it out?!

I’ve noticed in horror an archetype I once heard described as the “tough cookie.”

Usually a female, who is thrust into a situation where she is being hunted by antagonists, only for it to be revealed that she is quite capable of violence, and in a way becomes the slasher herself.

“You’re Next” I believe popularized the modern idea of this. Now we have the “ready or not” films, “pretty lethal” on Amazon, “they will kill you” is another. Feels like many many female horror protagonist now are “no nonsense, don’t take no gruff” types?

(Plus These films seem to end with main girl smoking or doing something similar.)

They are not “final girls,” they are something else. They aren’t Gina Davis in “the long kiss goodnight” either. They are Something informed by a rejection of the helpless final girl trope.

I think it’s fun and fine, but something rings a bit hollow about it once you get to something like “pretty lethal.”

Anyways, I’m working on something that sort of subverts this new trope. It doesn’t feel like a final girl or even a female horror protagonist is allowed to have a shred of squeamishness or cowardness (like a normal human being.)

Has anyone else noticed this archetype? How do you write a character who pulls herself through a horrible situation, where she must kill, but is not painted as John wick.

I think the text was like yellow? Maybe? I think the short was about halloween or a holiday maybe? I was just a really cool use of an expo dump at the beginning of a short, it was handled really well, but man I cannot find or remember what it was? Any ideas?

Surely this gives others the same feeling of existential spiritual numbness of not only the slow forward grind of capitalism but also the shameless hijacking of our sense of time.

What is Halloween if it last for FOUR months? I usually see the demoralizing end of summer “BACK TO SCHOOL SALES” the second Fourth of July is over and now we’re skipping that and going straight to Halloween? Why not go straight to advertising for Christmas 2027.

Your dopamine must be spiking at the recognition of the changing of the seasons and arrival of holidays AT ALL TIMES.

We know you like SPOOPY SEASON (yet bristle at any horror film that makes you slightly uncomfortable (see the recent backlash to Evil Dead Rise)) I’d pay money that people with yards full of SPOOOOOPPPYYY SEASON plastic wouldn’t last through all of “Red Rooms” or “Skinamarink” (or even give skinamarink a chance beyond some knee jerk reaction.)

I work at atlas9 and wanted to use a school bus for a school related short video we’re making.

“CALL THE SCHOOLS AND ASK” Yes I know, I know fair enough.

but I wanted to see if anyone here might have one. I’m also looking for a somewhat less modern looking bus, and I don’t think any schools around here have older ones anymore.

Unless one of you directly works at a school, I’m not interested in contacting a school until all my avenues are spent.

Just a classic American school bus. It’d be for like half a day of shooting and we’d be inside the bus the whole time, it won’t even move. The bus ain’t even gotta work!

My WHOLE script is about a guy who’s locked in the back of a 1980s hearse, and now I’m learning you can unlock the back doors from inside. I thought there might be child locks for those doors, but duh a hearse doesn’t have child locks.

Is there any way to fix or explain this?

WTF? it is bookable 5 days a week and is still THAT busy? How is that possible? That many people knw it exists and have old stuff to digitize? Something is up... Someone is booking it solely for themselves for some reason, I have no other explanation, seriously.

In this horror movie a guy is trying to bring a family member back from the dead, and since his mom has dementia, she won’t know they were ever dead to begin with.

But I’ve been told by a few people that dementia is just too intense and difficult a situation to dramatize just for a plot point.

My grandparents all had awful Alzheimer’s and dementia, so it’s not like I’m not familiar with it first hand. But I can see a world were critics savage my movie for using the disease as a “plot point.”

But also the protagonist is the person trying to bring the dead family member back to life and the wild adventure they go on to do it. The mom isn’t really a main character, and because of that I’m scared I’ll get punched in the gut for not “developing” her.

I dont think there is any way to write her that people would feel she is developed, it’ll be just too easy to knock.

It’s too bad because I think it makes the story more thorny and interesting.

I had a friend make a horror film that featured a kid with autism as part of the story and they got savaged for it, even though they did research and wrote it in good faith, using first hand sources.

So I don’t know what to do. As of now the mom is just kind of old and loopy and not explicitly degenerative. It’s more just about the their guilt driving them to resurrect their family member.

What do you think? The movie can still work without it, but you know, people are vicious. I don’t want that adjective dude on letterboxd to rattle off his little adjectives on me.
