Pick Grip For Extremely Fast Playing
Looking for advice on pick grip for fast alternate/tremolo picking
I’m trying to improve my picking speed, and I’m wondering if my pick grip could be holding me back.
I’m mainly talking about two types of playing:
- Fast tremolo/alternate picking during solos and scale runs
- Extremely fast rhythm picking on the low strings, like the main riff in Metallica’s Battery.
Picture 1 is my current pick grip. Picture 2 is another grip I’ve been experimenting with, where I hold the pick differently. I would ideally like a grip that I don't have to constantly change depending on what I'm doing. But maybe that's necessary.
For those of you who play this type of stuff at high speeds, is one of these grips generally better for developing speed and consistency? Or is pick grip mostly personal preference as long as you’re able to stay relaxed and get efficient pick movement?
I’m wondering if changing my grip now would be worthwhile, or if I should just stick with my current grip and work on my picking technique.
