Wildfire prevention

My local wildlife trust emailed this today, and I thought it was worth sharing.

"Wildfire risk is high right now, and we need your help to protect nature! Here are some key dos and don'ts:

❌ DON'T use BBQs in wild spaces

❌ DON'T throw cigarettes on the ground

❌ DON'T park on dry grass (a hot exhaust can spark a fire)

✅ DO take rubbish home, including glass and tins

✅ DO give wildlife space and stick to paths

✅ DO move somewhere safe and call 999 if you spot a wildfire, no matter how small (download What3Words app so you can give a precise location)"

They have an article on some of the impacts of wildfires here https://www.kentwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/dangers-bbqs-and-wildlife

Garden mammal camera trap survey

This survey is to find out how often hedgehogs share gardens with rats and mice and identify factors that may increase the risk of rodenticide exposure.

If you have a camera in the garden, please take a look.

Does anyone have any recommendations regarding bat detectors?

I'm pretty sure I just saw some bats flying over a neighbour's garden this evening. I have no idea what kind, but I'm curious, and it got me thinking about detectors.

IDK how likely I am to get into bat detecting, but if there's an accessible model out there, I could at least see what's flying around in my neighbourhood.

When it comes to apps and microphones for mobile phones, I use Android.

I'm just checking the footage after setting the cam to view the hedgehog feeding station on the right.

[Chrome] v150.0.7871.115 User flair not appearing in r/newtoreddit

I primarily use Chrome on desktop, as per the title.

But this affects my mod team too, and between us, we have tried:

iOS, Chrome browser via iphone

Safari via iPhone

iOS app version 2026.27.1.633614

Android 2026.27.0.2627060 Can see others' flair, but not my own, it looks like

This has been happening for a few days now.

Flairs are still applied and show as normal in mod tools.

Welcome new members!

Hi all

Every few months I like to post one of these welcome threads to say 'Hi' and welcome anyone new to the community :)

If you have any queries about the community or just want to say hi, introduce us to your garden, or have a quick question, please comment here.

If you're not new, feel free to join in anyway! The more the merrier!

Resources and information on gardening for wildlife are in the wiki, and the community rules are here.

Let us know how you found us, always interesting to see how folks find their way here :)

Happy wild gardening :D

---

P.S. It's really useful for you to have your rough location in your user flair for the community. This shows beside your username when you post or comment.

Don't be too specific - protect your personal information - but a rough idea of where in the world you are and/or your hardiness zone helps us help you if you need advice on plants or wildlife. Here's how to add user flair New reddit/redesign | Old/Classic/Legacy reddit | Mobile - official app.

Shadowban detector

Is it possible for an app to watch the removed queue for new removals and check if the user is shadowbanned? Then properly remove the content.

Un-ban all keeps approving posts in our sub (when users shadowbans are lifted), and while we have an app that clears them from the modqueue, those that don't go to the modqueue evade moderation when the tool approves them regardless of community rules.

I've asked for mod log entries for un-ban all, to no avail so far.

Skull found South-East England, would love an ID

I found this in a twitten between gardens and what was until recently an orchard. Twitten leads from the street to an ex-fruit farm.

Would also love to be sure where the loose canine fits. Seems like it's the upper jaw to me.

Automoderator instructions age restricted

Recently, I noticed the full documentation link for automoderator in the sidebar on r/automoderator asks for my birthday. I'm in the UK and not age verified. (In app it instead says r/reddit.com is archived).

So, I tried other links in the r/automoderator wiki index, and the same happens for the introduction, writing basic rules, and the full documentation links there. https://www.reddit.com/mod/AutoModerator/wiki/index

These pages are the only ones not hosted on r/automoderator but on r/reddit.com.

It seems r/reddit.com has now been marked NSFW?

We asked via modsupport mod mail if there is anything that can be done so UK mods don't have to verify their age or use VPNs just to see automod documentation.

Or

If r/reddit.com cannot be reclassified, could the automod documentation pages there be hosted on and redirected to r/automoderator instead.

We also noted that there may be other pages on r/reddit.com that are worth saving as well, like the old reddiquette and moddiquette, moderator guidelines pages, and spam and self promotion pages, too. Mods tend to refer to these, even if just for historical purposes.

I was told that to comply with the online safety act, Reddit requires age confirmation to access restricted content :|

This won't just affect UK mods, but mods anywhere with these new online safety laws.

Automod documentation isn't unsafe and mods shouldn't need to verify to see it, to help keep their communities safe.

r/automoderator has back-up pages here that can serve as an immediate work around for affected mods https://www.reddit.com/r/AutoModerator/wiki/backup

Hopefully a long term fix can be found.

A polite request that devs please avoid using imgur for app ReadMes, descriptions, and instructions.

Imgur is dead to UK users. We can't see the site or any images hosted on it, unless we hop on a VPN.

https://help.imgur.com/hc/en-us/articles/41592665292443-Imgur-access-in-the-United-Kingdom

Love you forever if you use an alternative host.

I haven't tried embedding images from these, but a couple of example hosts I use are ImageChest and postimages.org

Thank you :)

[Desktop] Chrome 149.0.7827.115 Sometimes the comment box is in the way in the modqueue

https://preview.redd.it/alpzlzb1f48h1.png?width=1300&format=png&auto=webp&s=03e964294ca8ae07eaf022e3aaa12525ced3cd55

The comment box, for some reason, extends across queue items as well as the open post, and blocks the last comment in the thread. This means to see that comment (I may as well check over comments while I'm there) I have to open the post outside of the queue.

If you had the opportunity to request a guide written by experienced mods, what would you want to know about?

I make no promises with this question, but I am curious, and the chances of me writing a guide if I have the knowledge are not 0.

Would you want to learn about getting more mods, how to use certain tools, why you might use some tools, about apps, how to handle something..?

I don't remember why we had some slate hanging about in the garden, but I decided to put it around the garden for the slow worms recently. I figured it would warm in the sun and be a nice place for them. I usually find them in my compost every year.

This bit of slate has been a hit, and there are baby slow worms underneath :)
