A Family Outing

We've been watching her build her nest since May and last night we had a family outing 💕

Would guess the babies are around 5 weeks, they live in the ferns under a tree in our garden, you can still hear them feeding from Mum in the day. She goes off on her own every night at the moment to feed, but she's always back by morning.

Wild hedgehog pregnant?

A hedgehog has been living in our small garden for around 2 weeks. The last days it started ripping out grass and carrying it inside the compost. Do you think it’s pregnant? If so can i help her somehow or should i just leave her alone. My garden is really small (40m2) so i am bumping in her on a daily basis.

HELP please

I recent found a dehydrated hedgehog in the day and took them to our local hedgehog hospital. Was told it was the right thing to do and that he weighed 81g.

Now we have another hog in the garden, much smaller and was nestling around looking for food. I’ve been watching from the kitchen window and he hasn’t moved in over an hour. I know this is normal feeding time but this little guy is small and I’m worried he needs help. Could he have seen me from the kitchen window and gotten scared? Any advice greatly appreciated. He was very active an hour ago!

Photographic evidence of our back garden visitor

We have been seeing this visitor outside of the kitchen window here at the western edge of the New Forest and finally got a picture. They are having long drinks of water at around 18:30 in the evening from the bird bath / outside dog water dish. In this hot weather it must be a relief. We put some hedgehog food down for it for later when it had left, alongside the scattered bird seed.

They then went into the bushes and you can see their little legs in the second picture.

On a mission

For the past couple of weeks one of our resident hogs Bertie has relocated to the front garden. This is him on his way to the food in the back garden. I've never seen him move so fast!

Happy Friday with a happy, healthy Hedgehog

He came to my garden during the recent heatwave, doing really well and yes his front feet are completely in the water, I may need a shallower bowl

He gets a consistent supply of proper hedgehog food, when the magpies aren't stealing it, and has a nest safely underneath a tree and flowers

Keep these guys safe!

I seem to have a hedgehog upon my foot...

Somehow I have awoken in a fairy land where 4 young hedgehogs have taken up residence in an ivy bush beside my backdoor. They wake up every day at 9:30pm on the dot and proceed to have a bumble round the patio for a good 20 minutes before making their way throughout the garden. So far, all 4 have continued to returned home the next day for the 5 days since I first spotted them. They're not really scared in the slightest and don't seem to mind me sitting next to them.

Is Mrs White a boy?

I decided to look at some footage on my laptop instead of the small screen on the trail camera. I think this is who I call Mrs White.

However it may be that Mrs is a Mr? Can anyone with more hedgehog experience give their opinion?

More of the Hoglets

All four looking nice and healthy here, since this footage we think one has potentially left the nest as we’ve only seen three together over the past day or so

Hedgehog in garden during the day, do I need to call someone?

I live in the UK and this little hedgehog has been in our back garden since yesterday. Left him some water on a shallow lid which he doesn’t appear to have drank, but I have seen him appear to be eating something in the mud. He is moving around easily and keeps changing spots in our garden. Is it safe to leave him to go about his business? Or does he need help?

Edit: I have called the local hedgehog rescue and she told me she doesn’t have any room, but she has told me of another rescue I can take him to tomorrow. For tonight I have taken him out of the garden and put him in a box that is well ventilated, with crunched up kitchen paper, I have left him some dog food that has been mixed with water and mashed up in a tiny little bowl, as well as some water.

My hog update 🩷

My hogs are doing really well. I built them a new house and laid the floor with some cool pvc material so it’s easier to clean and cooler on them as we’ve had crazy heat in the uk. I also drilled a few holes in the back side to allow for better airflow.

They seem to love the new house so much they haven’t been visiting the other one very much recently.

I also removed all the stones recently and we laid down some lovely flowers and it feels like a much nicer area for them now, although we accidentally planted some cat mint so I’ve been enjoying watching the kitties sniffing that.

Anyway here’s a clip from last night. We had a new visitor. I’ve never seen this one before….its the biggest hedgehog I’ve ever seen 😆 my other hog wasn’t too pleased to be sharing the water bowl.

Love them 😃

Nest with Hoglets

Bit grim, but thought best to ask. We have a mama hedgehog nesting in a tarp under our garden furniture. Unfortunately one of the hoglets hasn't made it - should we remove the hoglet to avoid disease/maggots or will the mother eat it?

Is this wild hedgehog okay? Itchy lump at rear?

We have an itchy hedgehog visiting our UK garden but there seems to be a itchy lump at the rear or underneath the back legs. Is this normal or does it need a vet?

Hogs on Film: Citizen Science Project to Understand & Protect Hoggies.

Lea is a PhD student at the University of Reading, studying hedgehogs in UK gardens. I think you can still get involved with her work through her website. She uses garden camera footage to study hedgehog behaviour and inter-specific interactions.
