My slightly long Sanders and MacArthur Headcanon That No One Asked For.
When the race ended Marsha MacArthur and Bethania Sanders returned to their police academy. Only things were not about to be easy sailing like they'd planned. Sure they may have made up and been on better terms now, but Valentina's little reveal about using an assumed name and having participated in illegal cross border smuggling wasn't about to be swept under the rug. Needless to say, she was detained. Even Sanders became under investigation for a brief time as it was assumed she may have been an accomplice. Thankfully it was short lived as MacArthur insisted she was none the wiser. So Sanders career was unscathed. MacArthur on the other hand was not. She was still awaiting trial and even if she somehow got off it was a Hell of a chance she'd be let back into the academy again.
Sanders however refused to give up on her. She believed firmly that Marsha, er, Valentina, er, well okay she was still a little confused but she believed in her change of heart. Despite MacArthur insisting that Sanders forget about her and go excel for herself Sanders refused. She wrote character statements, contacted lawyers with what limited funds she had. (All of MacArthur's were frozen.) Eventually managing to find one that worked cheap. At least better than a public defender. It wasn't easy but after about six months they came before a judge. MacArthur talked about being raised in a crime family. How she really did wanna turn her life around and that she knew what she did was wrong but she really just wanted a clean start. Sanders took the bench as well. Speaking of her growth and capabilities.
By the grace of God the judge took pity on them and gave MacArthur time served meaning she could be released from custody with the conditions of community service and anger management counseling. (He'd watched the show.) MacArthur agreed. Unfortunately not everything went well for them. The academy still didn't want her back. MacArthur, not about to give up decided to transfer to an academy in a neighboring town. Meaning she and Sanders would no longer be roommates. Still they kept in touch. In the new academy she went by Val, deciding to start being herself more often. Her new instructor noted that it probably wasn't a good idea to have her directly interacting with civilians
In turn MacArthur was wonderful with the dogs in the squad. They just seemed to naturally love her. Dogs are better than people after all. It was decided Val would be placed as an instructor and handler for the canine unit. She could keep her dream of law enforcement while also not potentially endangering most of the populace. Something she greatly appreciated.
Sanders meanwhile aced every aspect of her training. Written examinations, physical tests, mental and physical health evaluations. It was no surprise she graduated top of her class in three years time. When they were both finally done they moved in together once more into a unit with good security. Sanders insistence.
Currently in 2026 they're 35 and 34 respectively. Sanders has been promoted to commissioner of their city's police department while Valentina is still training her awesome dogs. Despite the hiccups their relationship lasted the test of time. Something they're proud of.
