And I don’t mean that running a shotgun is overall ‘better’ or ‘more powerful’ than a lunchbox item, just that (for me at least) it’s a way to play heavy that is leagues more *fun* and *dynamic* than his ‘traditional’ playstyle 90% of the time (imo)
This is not a balance discussion over which is technically better/stronger, this is a ‘which one is more fun to play’ discussion from a casual perspective (I play game to have fun not to be a sweat lord)
I also don’t mean fat scout, I mean just playing regular heavy but with any of shotguns as a secondary

My reasoning for shotgun heavy being way better (more fun) is that:
- It breaks up the monotony of ‘click and hold m1 on the enemy’ that a lot of people criticize abt heavy most of the time, adding more depth to how Heavy can approach a fight/situation when having to choose between big damage but big vulnerability or less damage but less vulnerability
- You get to actually dodge incoming fire to an impactful degree while being able to return your own (at least more than when revved)
- It’s good for repositioning, nobody can catch you off guard while unrevved for a free kill anymore
- You’re no longer completely screwed when anyone tries to cornerpeek you to death, since you also have a burst fire option now (and the minigun isn’t your only way of dealing dmg anymore)
- It lets you chase down enemies more effectively, since you aren’t moving at a snails pace with a minigun revved
- And revving down also doesn’t leave you completely vulnerable to people waiting around a corner to ambush you afterwards
- It makes weapons like the Brass Beast or Huo-Long Heater much more viable to play with, since it covers the brass beast’s weakness of being very easy to catch out when unrevved and very slow when dealing damage, and covers the huo-long heater’s ammo problems (although it’s also still fun with any of the miniguns besides these two (except Natasha (I fucking hate Natasha)))
- It also makes heavy’s melee options matter much more, since when you’re fighting someone, and you run out of shotgun ammo, you’re definitely gonna die in the time it takes to swap to and rev the minigun (even if it’s tomislav) so swapping to melee will always be a much faster way to try and get that last hit in (kinda like using your melee as a replacement secondary while you are using the shotgun). People usually like to get really close to heavy when fighting him so they can strafe around him and deal big dmg anyway lol, you’d be surprised how many times I got away with it
- Ofc the KGB is a good option (cuz shotgun duh) but I’ve gotten a lot of use out of the traditional heavy melees too, like FoS and GRU since the FoS can let you walk forward against high damage targets like demo/soldier (hopefully you already got close enough to them while you still had shotgun ammo), and GRU makes you fast enough to actually catch up to targets (imo the best option for direct melee combat, KGB is more for comboing with your shotgun/minigun). Even the Eviction Notice finds a (very niche) use in being able to use the speed boost hit in tandem with a shotgun
- Not many people know this, but the minigun actually stops making snipers flinch at a distance greater than 750 hammer units, but any of the shotguns will always flinch snipers, no matter what distance. A shotgun makes sniper SO MUCH MORE BEARABLE to be up against, since you don’t immediately eat 450 the moment your shiny bald spot alerts them to your position. You can actually do something to affect the matchup beyond ‘pray they miss the slowest class in the game’

You know how much range Corrupted Valkyrie has? 350. You know which super rares I have that have above 350 range?? NONE! I yearn for the BathCat, the Hacker Cat, even L’il Dragon. SOMETHING. But no. I don’t even get PSYCHOCAT to deal with her!
My luck with the gacha is so abhorrently shit, I don’t even have anything to outrange a BEAR variant! The one attacking uber I do have that deals damage doesn’t target alien or floating, and his damage might as well be nonexistent. Mamoluga ain’t doing shit to her either, but at LEAST hes useful.
Imagine how hellish every level with an Ursa Major has been, needing to rely almost solely on timing butterfly cat and castaway and chip damage from cattelite/ramen.

I remembered a little tiny insignificant little shidiot named Cataur. This little mother[fluff]er is the ONLY spammable attacker I was able to acquire with ABOVE 350 RANGE. So Cataur is now my 8th true form, congrats to bro ig. Salvation will be met through effort, not leniency. Everyone cheer him on.

Four entire true forms! before the end of ITF 2! before i even have level 30 super rares! yay
I have beaten ITF 1 moon, and am swiftly progressing through ch 2 as we speak
I've even managed to beat the red white and perfect cyclones, not that the reward's gonna matter in the slightest
It's not really that hard right now, but im sure it will get harder later. Early game doesn't give much in terms of difficulty, and especially now since i have these guys

The rules are basically that any cat that can ONLY be recieved from capsules are fair game. This is true for uber, super, and rare gachas, but it's also true for cats that normally aren't considered gacha, like the li'ls and event capsules. A funny side effect of this is that superfeline would technically count, but for the sake of the challenge and consistency I will not be using him.
A big downside is obviously that I cannot use any of the advent/cyclone units, making my only anti-metal (when i eventually get him) be jurassic cat, and barring me from units like rock, slime, glass, royal guard, etc. I also can't use ANY of the 1. crazed cats :( 2. special legends (no bahamut for me) 3. egg units (i didn't use courier anyways so lol) 4. purchasable special cats 5. bombercat (razorback hell)
And worst of all.. no eraser (or normals)
I do not have all of the super rares or even the rares yet, but I've managed to collect all of the li'l cats, even though they aren't useful right now. I have not gotten into SoL at all yet. The rares and supers are all level 25, and the ubers are 20.
The way I started this challenge was refusing to level or spend xp on any of the normals, and playing until I got my first rare ticket. That is when the challenge actually starts.
