Sharing this “Oldie but Goodie” flow chart to clear up any confusion.

This has been shared over the years in various climbing subs. I didn’t create it, but did add the highlighter. Hope this helps out some of the newer hikers who were confused about the distinction over the past couple days.

Cheers!

Scissors supposed to spring all the way open?

Just purchased a brand new Victorinox Nail Clip 580, and the scissors only spring about 25% of the way open. I can manually open them all the way. Is this how they are supposed to operate?

Photo shows them manually opened all the way, but you can see that the spring loaded bar (not sure of the proper name) is not pushing them open.

Lightest herb grinder?

For a triple crown thru hike, so bringing pre-ground herbs is not a possibility.

Used my fingers last time, but interested in a small grinder instead this time around.

Santa Cruz shredder sells a “lightweight” one made of hemp that doesn’t actually have a weight listed. Then of course there are the cheap translucent colored plastic ones.

I generally avoid plastic with anything related to my herbs, but understand that’s probably my best bet.

Does anyone have one that they swear by? Grinding 5-6x per day for rolling. Much love!

Sausage pack is bulging with air in fridge 1 day before “use or freeze by” date.

Breakfast sausage from Costco. Still 1 day before the “use or freeze by” date. Package seems to have inflated over the past couple days in my refrigerator.

Pretty sure it’s not safe to eat, but wanted to ask.

The interesting thing is that my fridge is about 3,000 ft higher than Costco, but I do not remember the packages appearing inflated like this when I got home and put them in the fridge.

Do retailers issue refunds for situations like this? What if I can’t make it to Costco before tomorrow? Thanks!

Funding a thru hike with OnlyFans?

Is this a common way to financially support a thru hike?

One of this year’s NOBO hikers (Kamryn Kirkham) is doing this quite publicly. There must be at least a few others doing so less publicly.

Has this been happening quietly for the past few years, or are we seeing the dawn of a new type of thru hiker / content creator who can stay on trail indefinitely?

Lastly, could a male thru hiker make enough with this method to pay for a summer on trail, or is this only a viable business model for female hikers?

Happy hiking!

I like everything about this tent except for the giant “DURSTON” logos next to both doors.

After spending $700 on some fancy plastic, I shouldn’t be obligated to advertise for the company in perpetuity.

Don’t get me wrong - this brand makes quality stuff. But I also think it’s weird to have the business owner’s last name plastered on both sides of my backpack and my shelter.

A sloppy fix would be a few layers of large DCF repair patches, but those are translucent, so logos would likely still show through. Has anyone solved for this, or does anyone have better ideas than the DCF repair tape?
