You don't have to have Thassalophobia to be scared

You don't have to have Thassalophobia to be scared of a bottomless void where you are not the apex predator and are in fact prey.

This is not just true of Subnautica but of real life. Reaching an underwater cliff and knowing there are sharks, giant squid, massive whales that can accidentally kill you, among other smaller but no less deadly threats; is truly a scary experience.

It's not a phobia, it's recognition of danger. You aren't equiped to survive in that location, you don't have the tools to keep yourself safe, there is no shelter nearby. The crazy people are the ones who aren't scared.

Boost, what happens to facedown card after boost ends?

I can't find this anywhere in the rules. I get when you boost the top card in your deck goes facedown under the boosted character. But what happens to the facedown card after the boost ends? Does it go into your hand? Get discarded? Go back on top of the deck?

The Importance of Gandolf (an example of why the writing was great in Expedition 33)

No you are not in the wrong sub, this is a post about Expedition 33. There are spoilers so if you haven't played past the introduction of Verso, turn away now. I want to break down some of the best writing in the game, this is an opinion piece and while not heavy on subtext, imagery, foreshadowing or the like in this post; I enjoy those elements of writing and focus on them more. If that kinda of thing isn't for you that's ok, get back to enjoying the game and scroll to a different post.

There is a newer writing trope being used. One that, at least to this point, hasn't been overused and still works. That is establishing a knowledgeable, organized good-guy, then killing him. Now I named this post after Gandolf, but I could've just as easily named it after Ned Stark or Dumbledore. The post is about Expedition 33's masterful use and slight change of this killing of the father figure trope.

Firstly what is the point of the trope, what does is accomplish? Most importantly is creates real stakes "If this character can die, any character can". It tells us Hallmark movies didn't make this script. There is mortal peril here for the characters, so you'd better beware. Its secondary objective is the creation of Chaos. The characters had a plan or at least a leader who could adapt to the enemy/threats. Taking away the person with the ability to adapt or stay one step ahead, or formulate a strong cohesive plan; creates chaos. What do we do now? How do we do it? Can we do it? "I don't think Gandolf meant for us to go this way Sam." "I don't think Gandolf meant for a lot of things to happen Mr. Frodo.". The chaos is compelling and interesting, combed with the heightened stakes, this invests the reader/viewer/gamer in the characters.

I am of course talking about >!the death of Gustav!<. Though the masterstroke of Expedition 33 is the wrinkle they threw into this trope. I would like to ask a question, who is the main character of Expedition 33? Since this is a spoiler labeled post, I'm assuming everyone has finished the game and would answer Maelle. But that's not really what the game did.

The game introduces us to Gustav first, then Maelle, and Malle quickly leaves. We stay with Gustav and he meets up with Sophie, goes through Lumiere with her as she says her goodbyes. Then the focus is back on Gustav and Sophie as the game shows you exactly what the Gommage is. You experience it through Gustav, you feel his emotions with him. You continue to play the game from Gustav's perspective, going to the Expeditioner's party, starting the Expedition. All the way to waking up alone in that forest as Gustav. When you finally start playing the game in earnest, the first other character you add to the party is Lune, not Maelle.

So who is the main character? Maelle has only made a few brief appearances to this point, Lune you see playing the guitar and have one optional conversation at the party with. By all the laws of writing they are side characters, Gustav is "The Main Character". Gandolf, Dumbledore, and Ned Stark, were never "The Main Character". They were important, but even in A Song of Ice and Fire which has a dozen perspective characters in the first book, Ned isn't "The Main Character".

This is important, it is a masterstroke of writing IMO. I can't name any story where The Main Character dies 1/3 of the way through. As players we are still trying to figure out the story. This is the both the biggest clue and the biggest roadblock to our understanding. Leaving us with two opposing thoughts. On the one hand if Gustav isn't MC than, well, who is? On the other hand holy shit if Gustav isn't the MC who the hell could it be? This creates so much more chaos, more emotion, and more stakes than the killing of any other character would. You don't feel safe after his death, if you ever did. The problem which seemed huge before, now seems insurmountable. There is no possible way we can win now.

Except Gustav wasn't the main character, Maelle is. Gustav didn't have the plan and the ability to overcome any odds, the real Renoir does. We're not given enough information to realize Renoir is the real father figure, and Maelle is the real MC. We have to re-think the story from the beginning to fully grasp this. Something we aren't trained to do and it certainly isn't easy. It becomes so much more apparent on a second play through, once we know the ending. First time watching this, its mind boggling. This even perfectly foreshadows the swerve of >!who the main villain is as well!<.

That is my two cents on an under appreciated bit of writing that magnificently made us invested in the world of Expedition 33; that is equal parts cruel, terrifying, wondrous, and childlike.
