Half sighthound (Podenco), half Mastin

As a pup you could really see the Podenco in him. Today not so much anymore. The Mastin is really taking over at 8 years old.

It is quite the character. Being a 50-50 mix between an independent and intelligent sighthound ánd an independent and intelligent cattle guard. Being over 100 lbs. He can easily take over my household if I don't stay on top of it. What a dog! I love him to bits, even if I have to negotiate every turn I try to take every walk every day.

Tiny annoyance with X Dome 2

One thing that annoyed me a bit while hiking and camping with my dog for a couple of days: the stakes and the cord on the stakes is not that firm. One of the small stakes bent on the second day. One of the cords of the larger stakes snapped when I tried to pull it out. Second or third day of use. I thought it odd. And thought one should know. Something to mind when purchasing and using this tent.

Five dat hike through Greidhoeke, Feysland

Last Wednesday I stepped outside with my dog, and with my gear packed to hike from home for a couple of days through my own area. We walked an average of some 8km per day, which is perhaps not a great distance, but it was heaps of fun for the dog. And me. I was a happy person out there.

We stayed at known camping sites. Every morning around six we woke up. I got my dog his breakfast, while I packed up. Around eight we would stop and I would make breakfast somewhere on the side of the road (hot coffee, hot oats). We'd move on for a couple of kilometres and then sit down and have a long rest (my dog is eight years old and not used to long distances). Eat lunch and start walking again.

My dog decides the pace. He has to sniff this, lick that, pee there, swim a bit, try to catch a duck. He has to cross the road. And cross again. And again. And again. Because reasons. He has to at least try to chase that cat!

Around 14h00 we'd arrive at our next camping site. Pay, find a spot, pitch the tent. My dog would be fast asleep after that.

Until dinnertime. That's when he wakes up and wants his food too. And a short walk of course to do his business.

At 20h30 we would be in the tent. Not long after that fast a sleep. Until the wake up at around six the next morning.

It was just five days, four nights. We've been home now for about four hours. It feels like we were on our way much longer, and like I would want to do this forever. Simply forever.

A simple hike through Fryslân

I walked for six days through the grassy flat lands of the Greidhoeke, Fryslân. With my dog and the X-Dome 2.

What a sweet tent that is as a temporary home! So easy to pack and pitch and pack again. I love it.

My dog did tear the mesh in several places. He is a large dog and likes to stretch his legs against something that provides resistance. The mesh was no match for that.

I will patch it up, and when the inner is truly destroyed by my sweet boy after many pleasant hikes, I'll probably replace it with a solid inner and see if that is a better match for my little fellow.

Thanks Durston team for your thoughtful design. I love this tent.

Anyone walked in from far?

I live in a tiny hemlock in the northern part of the Netherlands right on one of the routes connecting to the main routes to Santiago. I could start the trail right in front of my front door.

The route would take me on the Jabikspaad and other Jacobswegen through the Netherlands and Belgium, then on to the Via Lemovicensis in France, and finally on the Camino Francés in Spain.

It would take several months over a total of about 2.800km through four countries. And I would love to do it!

Anyone here who did or tried something similar? What moved you to undertake such a trip? Whether you finished or not, what is something you would love to share here? What would you have liked to understand in advance? What is something you will never forget? Would you try such an endeavour again? Why?

I would love to hear from you guys.

Dog inside tent; protect tent floor

I got myself the Durston X-Dome 2. It's a dream of a tent. Easy to pitch, roomy, light enough.

This summer I will hike together with my dog. He is a 28kg dog and he will sleep with me inside the tent. He has his own sleeping pad and puffer poncho. But I know he will move around in the tent.

For my own sleeping pad (Exped ultra 6.5 mw) I will use a cotton cover as protection against my dog's nails.

I will use a Tyvek 2*2,2m sheet as a footprint underneath the floor. And I would like to protect the floor a bit more from the inside out too, again against the dog's nails. Tent flooring has developed quite a bit since my last tent with bulky and heavy pvc bathtub floor. It feels so tender and a bit fragile.

I have a DD magic carpet. Would that do? Something else? Anyone solved this problem of dog nails for themselves?

I'd love to hear your best solutions.

Or perhaps no solution is needed because dog nails won't be a problem? In that case I would love to know.
