#OnThisDay 1914, World War I Took a Major Turn

On This Day, August 1, 1914, Germany officially declared war on the Russian Empire, dramatically escalating the crisis that would become World War I.

Just days earlier, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand had plunged Europe into political chaos.

When Russia ordered the mobilization of its army in support of Serbia, Germany viewed it as a direct threat.

On August 1, Germany responded with a declaration of war.

Within days, Europe's system of alliances pulled nation after nation into the conflict.

🇫🇷 Germany declared war on France on August 3.

🇧🇪 Germany invaded Belgium on August 4.

🇬🇧 Britain declared war on Germany later that same day.

What began as a regional dispute quickly became a global war involving more than 30 nations.

By the time World War I ended in 1918, an estimated 16–20 million people had lost their lives, forever changing the course of modern history.
