I am going from gis work at wre firms to civil/environmental engineering: is it best I stay within wre?

I worked at a few wre civil engineering firms doing gis things as well as engineering tasks, including some hydraulic modelling, even proposals! I’d like to stay in the water area because I’m familiar with the industry but I’m also aware of the job market… I finish graduate school in 2029 so I assume it will be better then?

I’ve been looking into solid waste management, I just feel like my background gives me a solid edge into the water and wastewater engineering sector.

Would it say it’s best to focus on water to secure a job in the future or are there other industries within the civil/environmental sector (I guess land development but reading horror stories with developers that’s low on my list hahaha 😩). I’ve had some bad experiences working with hydrogeologists so I’m also avoiding groundwater (maybe it was just the firm I was at? Just found some to be pretty rude).

Dumb question: but are design engineers the ones who create as-builds?

I’m currently taking my first AutoCAD class. I’m pretty familiar with as-builds because I worked in the GIS and remote sensing sector involving water infrastructure and regularly had to view these documents to maintain GIS records.

As-Builds are also the reason I decided to go into civil because I also like the fonts used in older as-builds(yes I know I’m weird).

Question on finding photos of relatives?

So my dad’s paternal grandfathers’s blood line has been in the American south since the 1600s. Interestingly arrived due to being royalists in the English civil war (-_-). My paternal grandfather’s second great/grandfather was a union officer in Kentucky (as well as his brother) while the rest of his family were confederates in another state.

I also believe this 4th great/grandfather of mine to also be partially Black either 1/16 or 1/25. I know the regiment he was in, just curious where I could search to maybe find a photograph of him?

Are the worst managers the ones who act nice to your face but sabotage you?

I’ve had both types of awful managers (one who pretends to be nice and the one who is awful straight to your face). but I feel like it’s harder for me to categorise the manager I had who would downplay issues I had with settling in at my (THEN) new job as a “bad”manager. Whereas the one I had prior who would verbally accost me for the smallest errors while downplaying ignoring the errors of a nepo hire, as being “the worst kind of manager”.

Both are awful in their own way, but I feel psychologically it’s harder to categorise a fake-nice manager as being crappy. Is this just corporate mind games? How do you determine if the person that’s interviewing you is one of these fake-nice types? They are dangerous!!!

Real talk: how bad is the market for new grads?

Seems like some sectors in civil are better than others right now, but I’m a current student (est graduation 2029) in environmental engineering. I’m assuming the current economy maybe impacting budgets? (a lot of cities in my state have budget deficits right now).

To folks who are early career or entry-level how has the job search been?

I was a gis engineering technician working in water, up until last year and didn’t have issues getting interviews and had two job offers but I think the economy has changed since.

Where can I find intro chem acs resources? I have searched the globe far and wide.

I can’t even find quizlets that people made. I have just accepted my faith with general chemistry acs that I can find… are the books decent for this? Doesn’t help I had the worst teacher this semester :( no guidance so doing this all by myself 😭 😭 😭 our lectures were random YouTube videos she found.

Any help is appreciated or advice.

What should I say to my teacher who didn’t give me the same instructions on my accommodated exam that she gave in class?

Last week I took an exam where the teacher typically has a review for 30 minutes then the exam. Usually I attend the review, then right after the review I take my exam at the disability service centre. This time I skipped the review because I had another exam the next day and I took the exam for this class earlier than normal so I’d have more time to study.

I was shocked at my grade because I felt the test was easy. I was told by a classmate that during the review she told students to write out ABCD etc not just circle it, and if you didn’t do this you’d get minus 1 for each question. Well I wasn’t informed this at all during my accommodated exam and it wasn’t included with my exam or on the exam itself.

I have a meeting with my disability counsellor next week to discuss this.

I have this class tomorrow and we get our exams back. I was meaning on saying that giving different instructions like this without notice violates US ADA law (where I am) as well as a specific state law.

Does it matter if I didn’t communicate with my instructor that I planned on taking it earlier I suppose that doesn’t make up for violating ADA law? :/ all I know is I communicated with her to send it to the centre and she informed me that she did. Was never told it was mandatory to attend the review session.

I am nervous that she will retaliate against me for complaining about this…

I’m taking physics right now and my female lab professor will walk away from me when I have a question during the lab. She will spend the entire duration of lab helping men and I’ve heard from other classmates she will walk away from other women mid-question. I’ve experienced this before in engineering work spaces as well as with another female physics professor who also felt it wasn’t fair that disabled students got accommodations for exams.

Is there a proper way to say something to people like this to get them to stop doing this? I’m having to finish my lab during the weekend because I couldn’t get the help then. What exactly do these folks think they will achieve by acting like this? I also had female managers who would give women less work than male co-workers who had less work experience than me.

I can’t deal with this anymore
