kvcrnews.orgUpcoming Meeting to Select LA Metro Board Member Representing North County/SFV – Aug 26 (Wednesday) at 11:30am – In Person, Phone, & Online
Source: https://cityselection.lacounty.gov/ And yes, I'm aware they mistakenly put Thursday (instead of Wednesday).
On August 26^(th) at 11:30am, the North County/San Fernando Valley sector will have a meeting to select their candidate for the vacant LA Metro Board of Director seat. Once selected, it will go to a full vote on the LA County City Selection Committee (where all cities within LA County votes).
Previously the Sector for North County/SFV selected John Gibs (Santa Clarita Councilmember), only to not get approved when the full LA County City Selection Committee voted. Now the Sector is meeting again to decide who will be their candidate. There were other candidates running in the previous Sector meeting: Dan Brotman (Glendale City Councilmember), and Eric Ohlsen (Palmdale Mayor). It remains to be seen if the same or different candidates will be running for the seat. Please note that both the North County/SFV Sector & LA County City Selection Committee votes are based on city weighted-population votes (and not raw number of cities vote). Picture for North County/SFV weighted votes posted above.

abc7.comKey Takeaways from Brightline West Financial Disclosures
This is the official financial data page on the federal EMMA database that reveals that the Brightline West high-speed rail project (the planned train between Las Vegas and Southern California) is experiencing critical financial distress.
- A Massive $1.4 Billion Debt Load: This page tracks a specific funding piece worth $1,377,825,000 in "Senior Secured Revenue Bonds" issued to build the train tracks and infrastructure.
- An Exceptionally Expensive 12% Interest Rate: The project is locked into a 12% coupon rate until the year 2065. This unusually high interest rate means the company must generate massive amounts of cash just to pay off its daily borrowing costs.
- The Market Value Has Plummeted by Half: The interactive trading chart shows a severe collapse. Investors initially bought these bonds at 100% of their value, but the price has crashed down to the 50% range, proving that Wall Street is highly skeptical the project can pay its bills.
- Official Warnings of Funding Shortfalls: Under the disclosures tab, the project operator (DesertXpress Enterprises LLC) officially notified the market that its designated interest accounts are running empty and lack the cash needed to make upcoming payments.
- Emergency Legal Maneuvers to Buy Time: The most recent document, filed August 3, 2026, is a "Fourth Supplemental Indenture of Trust." In plain terms, this is a legal amendment showing that Brightline West had to beg its lenders for a temporary pause so it can look for alternative financing.
- A Long-Standing Pattern of Financial Trouble: The timeline shows this isn't a surprise. The database archives a formal "Notice of Default" dating back to December 4, 2025, showing the project has been on financial thin ice for months.
